Chapter 1

The conversation in the meeting room continued.

Mia swirled her glass, her lips puckered in displeasure.

"Elena, the Brooklyn docks reek of fish guts and the sour sweat of lowlifes. I'd rather have a gallery on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan."

Elena patted the back of Mia's hand.

"Sweetheart, how much does a Fifth Avenue gallery pull in a year? Brooklyn has sixteen berths. Eight million in cash moves through there every month."

"Back when the Irish mob ran the docks, it was Helena who took two bullets for this family to take that territory."

"Now the Irish are all dead, the unions are handled. That place is nothing but clean, endless cash."

Outside the door, my fingertips pressed through my clothes against the jagged scar below my right ribs.

That dock. I'd taken two bullets for it, nearly died in Brooklyn for it.

But in Elena's mouth, the blood I'd waded through, the life I'd almost lost, was brushed aside in one lazy sentence. Nothing but cash for Mia to burn.

Mia pursed her lips.

"Will Helena really agree to hand over the docks? She was reviewing the third-quarter reports just last week."

Julian, who hadn't spoken until now, finally opened his mouth.

"She doesn't need to agree."

His hand slid off Mia's shoulder, gently smoothing the blonde hair scattered down her back.

"I've prepared all the transfer documents. Helena thinks it's just a routine agreement. She already signed the last page yesterday."

"Monday, the beneficial owner of the docks automatically becomes Mia."

Hearing Julian's words, my blood froze solid in my veins.

I'd handled thousands of contracts. No word trap, no hidden clause ever slipped past me.

But last night, Julian brought me a cup of ginseng tea, set a document on my desk, and said softly it was just a standard agreement. He told me to sign it and get some rest.

I hadn't even turned to the second page before I signed my name.

In this family where every step could be your last, I'd guarded against everyone. Everyone except my husband. I gave him my trust, completely, without reservation.

And he used that trust to drive a knife straight into my back.

At the far end of the table, my father-in-law Victor rapped his knuckles on the wood. Everyone fell silent instantly.

Victor looked at Julian.

"Has Helena suspected anything lately?"

Julian bowed his head slightly.

"No, Father. She's still upstairs in the study, going over the ledgers."

"That foolish woman thinks if she just cooks the books a little more, she'll actually secure her place in this family, earn your approval and Mother's."

He paused, then let out a scoff.

"I know her too well. All she sees are columns of numbers. Nothing else."

Elena took a sip of whiskey.

"Helena is capable, I'll give her that. But she doesn't have Cappello blood, and she's not obedient like Mia."

"She's too arrogant. Doesn't understand how this family works. Thinks just because she married Julian, she's the lady of the Cappello house."

"Once she launders the last two overseas accounts into the family trust, her usefulness is done."

Victor stubbed out his cigar.

"Sunday, at the family gathering. We announce Mia takes over the docks."

"Julian, go back up first. Don't leave Helena alone in the study too long."

"Understood, Father."

The sound of leather shoes on carpet moved toward the door.

I turned quickly, retraced my steps, not a single footfall making a sound.

Back in the second-floor study, I added a piece of charcoal to the fireplace, crafting the illusion I'd never left.

A moment later, the study door pushed open. Julian walked in.

He shrugged off his coat, hung it carelessly on the rack.

"The wind's brutal in New Jersey."

He walked up behind me, leaned down, rested his chin on the crown of my head.

"Irish remnants causing trouble at the docks again. I had my men seize two of their shipments. I'm freezing, Helena."

"Is that so?"

I took a sip of coffee, eyes lowered.

"Then I suppose you've had a long day."

Julian reached around, pulled me against his shoulder, his voice tender.

"For the family. For our future. A little hardship is nothing."

"By the way, Sunday's family gathering. Wear the black evening gown."

"Father says there's an important announcement."

I watched his reflection in the coffee cup, my expression perfectly even.

"All right. I'll be there on time."

Sicilian sunlight poured through the estate's long corridor, scattering broken shadows across the tile floor.Sea breeze drifted through the olive groves along the cliff, carrying the salt and warmth unique to the Mediterranean. At the head of the massive long table, old Don Alfonso leaned back in his high-backed chair, his gaze resting on his youngest daughter."Eight years breaking your back in New York. Finally willing to settle down back in Sicily?"The old man's voice was hoarse, but his eyes held both scrutiny and something like relief.I walked to the head of the table and planted the solid gold black eagle cane upright on the floor."Back then I was naive. I thought if I gave enough, I'd get something like a real family in return.""After walking the outside world, I finally understand. The strong eat the weak. That's the only law in this world."The Moretti family's senior leadership rose from both sides of the table in unison, right hands over their hearts, bowing to the newl

In the underground wine cellar of the Cappello estate, several expensive oak barrels lay smashed to splinters.Aged red wine mixed with rainwater, snaking down the stone steps, staining the garden paths red.Victor sat in a wheelchair, pushed by a guard to the center of the courtyard. The New York Don who once commanded everything could barely form words now, half his body completely paralyzed."Helena... the estate is the Cappello family's last shred of dignity... you can't tear it down..."Drool leaked from the corner of Victor's mouth as his one working hand clawed desperately at the wheelchair armrest.Several heavy bulldozers had already started up at the edge of the lawn, their diesel engines rumbling low and deep. The Moretti guard captain let out a cold laugh."Dignity is earned with strength. Not by bleeding dry the people who carved out your territory and then tossing them aside like cheap scrap.""How many bones of people like Helena are buried under this estate, people who

Blue and white lights flashed outside the banquet hall. A dozen federal agents crossed the threshold. The lead prosecutor carried a thick file and walked straight to the long table."Mr. Cappello. We've received the complete chain of evidence from the Moretti family.""Hundreds of millions in illegal fund flows over the past eight years. All of it traces back to the Cappello family's core trust funds.""Thirteen counts of contract murder. Twenty-four counts of dock smuggling. The evidence is ironclad."Victor, barely propped up by Elena, heard the charges and lost whatever will he had left to fight. The crimes they'd meant to pin on me, under the crushing weight of the Moretti family, landed right back on the Cappello family instead.Julian scrambled backward in terror, trying to hide behind the curtains. Two federal agents moved in fast and locked a pair of silver cuffs around his wrists."Helena, save me! I'm your husband!""We're not divorced yet. Just say one word for me on the ind

The Moretti guard tossed a document onto the center of the long table.Victor fumbled his reading glasses on, trembling, his eyes crawling across the first line."Surrender all actual control of every freight terminal at the Port of New York. Shut down all black-water smuggling routes.""All nine offshore trusts held by the Cappello family to be transferred in full to the Moretti family foundation for management.""You're cutting off the Cappello family's lifeline entirely!"The old man choked on his own fury, coughing up a mouthful of blood that soaked the white napkin at his chest.Elena screamed and lunged to catch her husband, then whipped her head toward the end of the table, howling."Helena, you vicious bitch! How can you be this heartless?!""Back when you had nothing and married into the Cappello family, we gave you a roof, we took you in!""Julian gave you everything you wanted, and now you're driving this whole family to its grave!"A guard drew his pistol and pressed the co

Every Cappello hand in the banquet hall had already been taken over by the Moretti guard. But Victor, the Cappello Don, still couldn't quite believe it."Helena, you think you can scare me by hiring a few dozen mercenaries and slapping fake Moretti crests on them?""The Moretti family rules the European underworld. Why would they waste a glance on some orphan who crawled out of nowhere?"The old man tore open his collar and screamed at the bodyguards behind him to fight back. Not a single one moved. The guard captain drew his pistol and fired straight into the wood floor at Victor's feet."Cappello. Open your damn eyes and look at this."A parchment family document, stamped with the Moretti blood seal, slapped across Victor's wrinkled face. The moment he saw the signature at the top, the color drained from him."This... this is the old Don Alfonso's personal seal. Helena really is the Moretti family's youngest daughter!"Mia went pale, shrinking behind her chair, shrieking."No! That's

Sunday night, the Cappello estate banquet hall.I wore the black strapless evening gown Julian had picked out and sat quietly at the far end of the long table.Victor sat at the head. Elena sat beside him, and next to her was Mia, that pink diamond necklace glittering at her throat.Julian walked over, but he didn't sit beside me. He pulled out the chair next to Mia and settled in like he belonged there. After the servers cleared the appetizers, Victor set down his silver knife and rapped the table. The entire hall went silent.Victor lifted his head, his sharp gaze landing on me."Helena. Sign this."Julian rose and slid a legal document, dozens of pages thick, in front of me.I glanced down. The document didn't just strip me of my sixteen Brooklyn berths and every shipping equity I held. It also piled nine hundred sixty million dollars in money laundering charges, plus linked smuggling and tax evasion counts, all onto my name alone. So that was it. Friday morning, once the last two o
