Chapter 3

Author: Fiery Double
It wasn’t until the second morning that I was still feeling dazed.

Soren got up around then. He changed into the clothes I had ironed for him and glanced at me as I set breakfast on the dining table.

"You’re not joining the dance troupe anymore? So you’re just staying at home like this? There isn’t really anything for you to do here, is there?" His voice softened toward the end, carrying a note of confusion.

My hand paused mid-wipe. I looked up at him, only to catch him immediately averting his gaze.

"Have your breakfast at home. I’m not eating. Don’t walk me out. Don’t come pick me up tonight either. I’m going to see Dr. Nadia."

As he spoke, he rubbed his brow at just the right moment, his tone flat and casual.

If this were before, I would have been worried about his condition. Now, all I felt was a chill spreading through my chest.

He was about to turn 28. We were also about to register our marriage.

In previous lives, at this point, I had completely lost the ability to focus on work, spending every day in constant fear and anxiety.

So I had simply quit the dance troupe and truly became a housewife.

Back then, he had thought I was working too hard and had laughed as he said, "Then don’t go anymore. From now on, dance just for me. With me here, what do you still need to worry about?"

I had accompanied him to and from work. He had introduced me openly to his colleagues. He would lift his hand almost proudly, showing off our matching rings.

Now, he looked at me with guarded indifference and told me, "Stop watching me all day. Find yourself something to do."

My breathing hitched. Immediately after came the loud slam of the front door, and the house fell into an eerie silence.

I sat at the table, mechanically picking at the breakfast in front of me. There was still warmth left in it, yet once it entered my mouth, it felt unusually cold.

How did it become like this?

Ever since Soren started treatment, the distance between us had slowly grown. He began to grow impatient with me, resistant to my presence.

After three lifetimes with me, had he finally met his true love?

Saving Soren had become something like a program hard-coded into my fate. Being told so suddenly to give it up made me feel as though I’d lost the center of my life.

I felt like I should rush up to him and demand answers. I wanted to ask him whether all my efforts across those lifetimes were nothing more than a joke to him. I wanted to know if that was the case, why had he still chosen to cooperate with me again and again?

In the end, I pretended that nothing had happened.

I watched helplessly as Soren grew more distant by the day. He was colder toward me, and the words between us grew fewer and fewer.

I watched Dr. Nadia draw closer and closer to him. On several nights, he couldn’t even be bothered to keep up appearances anymore. He took calls from her directly on the balcony.

In the darkness, even with a pane of glass between us, I could still see the smile spreading at the corner of Soren’s mouth.

Then came one evening. Like a resentful wife, I sat stubbornly at the dining table, waiting for him to come home.

It was nearly nine o’clock. After reheating the food more times than I could count, Soren finally returned.

Only this time, he wasn’t alone. Dr. Nadia came back with him.

My name is Nadia Pembroke. I am a psychological counselor. At the beginning of the year, I met a client: a refined, well-mannered woman named Evelyn Vantrell. Although she didn’t look that well, it was clear she hadn’t reached the point of needing my services herself.Just as I suspected, she brought me to see the real patient: a 28-year-old woman."This is my daughter-in-law. She and my son were in a car accident during a self-driving trip. My son… died on the spot…" Evelyn choked up before continuing, "She was unconscious for two days. When she woke up, her mental state became like this."I turned my head to look at the woman sitting on the sofa. She was beautiful, tall, and slender with an elegant posture. Evelyn said she used to be a dancer. I smiled lightly and said that it showed. The younger woman sat quietly, absently playing with the two bracelets tangled together around her wrist."Her name is Sloane Hartwell. You can call her Sloane."I nodded and cautiously tried to

The moment I hung up the phone, a flood of inexplicable emotions surged in my chest, but the strongest of them all was something like sorrow. It was the kind of sorrow that comes from realizing that no matter how many times you loop back, you still can’t escape fate.I walked backstage. The performers were already putting on makeup and changing into costumes.I steadied myself and prepared to face the performance ahead.Seven o’clock arrived. Everything restarted.I stepped onto the long-awaited stage. Looking out at the audience filling the seats below, I took a deep breath and slowly raised my arms. The music rushed, softened, then fell silent. When the piece ended, I hadn’t made a single mistake. As the lights poured over me, illuminating my entire body, I saw Lily’s upturned face in the crowd, so full of happiness and joy. It was just like all those times in the past when I had sat in the audience, looking up at the dancers onstage. That was when the seed of a dream had bee

On the way backstage to present flowers, I suddenly heard the sound of sobbing. I looked over and saw what seemed to be a mother and daughter. The one crying was a little girl. Her mother was beside her, gently comforting her, "It’s okay, Lily. We’ll come again next time. She will definitely be back."I was standing there, not knowing what to do, when the little girl suddenly lifted her head and met my eyes. In the next second, a burst of light flared in her gaze. She stared at me in disbelief."Sloane Hartwell!"By the time I reacted, Lily had already run right up to me."Oh, it’s you! You’re Sloane Hartwell, right? My daughter is a huge fan of yours. You weren’t in the last few troupe performances, and she was really worried about you. She insisted on coming backstage to take another look."Ever since she watched your performance three years ago, she’s been set on learning dance. She keeps saying that one day she wants to share the stage with you."Her mother, Grace Parker’s w

After I opened the door and let them in, Soren went off to look for his things. Dr. Nadia stayed behind, sitting across from me, talking on and on about Soren—how he was, what he liked, what he’d been doing.I looked at the happiness glowing on her face and felt a tight blockage in my chest. They were moving fast. Soren really couldn’t wait to get rid of me."Where are the bracelets we bought after the college entrance exams?" Soren spoke suddenly, catching me off guard.Instinctively, I drew my hands closer to my clothes, not letting him see that both bracelets were actually on my wrists. After the college entrance exams, he had worked a summer job for two months. He woke up early and came home late, all so that when I started school, he could fasten one of those bracelets onto my wrist himself.Later, when we had money, he started giving me more expensive jewelry. Those two bracelets had been set aside. They were from a small but well-known affordable luxury brand. They weren’

When the music ended, the other members dispersed to rest, but I stayed where I was, lost in thought.I used to be Miss Lowell’s pride. Even at a young age, my talent stood out unusually. She once praised me, saying that just by standing there, I became the center. Now, though, I felt trapped, unable to find my way out."Miss Lowell, how long will we be rehearsing for this production?""Two months."I froze for a moment when I heard the answer, because when I calculated it, the premiere date would fall exactly on Soren’s 28th birthday. In past lives, when I had been doing everything in my power to help Soren escape death, the troupe had still completed the premiere perfectly without me.In truth, I didn’t have to participate this time either. After all, in those previous lives, they hadn’t come looking for me.Thinking that way, I was just about to back out. However, when the music started again, and I saw everyone adjust their expressions and throw themselves into it with full

As his last words fell, Dr. Nadia opened the door.Sunlight poured in, as if guiding him toward a new life. He didn’t hesitate for even a second before stepping toward her.I forced myself to move, watching as he and Dr. Nadia stood together, looking perfectly matched."Ms. Hartwell, Soren said this strawberry tart is really good. I bought an extra one especially to bring back for you."She handed me a beautifully packaged dessert. The moment I saw it, my hand jerked back as if shocked. That deep, soul-level fear surged up again, freezing me in place.I used to love strawberry tarts. In the second life, Soren had even learned to make them by hand.I disliked his skill level, though, and would only buy them from a specific shop. After work, he went to Little Bakery across the street to buy one for me.Then the billboard fell from the sky. Strawberry jam splattered everywhere. It was a scene I will never forget. From that moment on, I never touched strawberries again."It taste
