Chapter 2

Autor: Roselle
Ezra’s flight was scheduled for ten o’clock that night. Before wheeling his suitcase out the door, he turned around and kissed my forehead.

“I’ll be back in three days. Wait for me, okay?”

I smiled and nodded. “Safe travels.”

The moment the door closed, the smile on my face disappeared.

At eleven o’clock that night, Nina sent me a photo. In it, the gift box had been opened, and the necklace she had been talking about for a long time was clasped around her neck.

[Thank you, Olivia! I absolutely love it. Why did you drop by without telling me beforehand?]

I stared at that necklace for a long time. I had bought it with the money I earned after spending half a month working into the wee hours on illustrations.

I didn’t reply and simply shut my phone.

Early the next morning, she sent another message.

[Olivia, why are you ignoring me?]

Still, I didn’t reply.

At noon, a message from Ezra arrived as well.

[Babe, I’ve landed. The signal here isn’t great. Let me know when you get to the hotel so I know you’re safe.]

I didn’t even bother to look at it again. After four years, this was the first time I felt so sure.

Over the next three days, I filled my schedule to the brim. On the first day, I met my lawyer, Frank. He slid the divorce papers over to me.

“Don’t worry about the assets you had before marriage, but his income from the past few years of marriage is considered a joint asset. If he’s at fault, you can claim even more.”

I pushed a folder toward him, asking, “Are these enough? Take a look at them for me.”

As he flipped through the transaction records and call logs, his brows furrowed. “These can only prove that things look suspicious; they don’t prove an affair. I need concrete evidence.”

“Can you find it?”

“Yes, but it will take time.”

I nodded. “Then find it. I can afford to wait.”

On the second day, I began packing my things. I didn’t have many belongings, so two suitcases were enough to fit everything. I also placed the divorce papers on his desk in the study.

For the past four years, this place was my home. However, only now did I realize that I had been an outsider all along.

On the third day, I moved back into the small apartment I owned before we got married. As I pushed open the door, a cloud of dust hit me in the face. I opened all the windows, allowing the wind to rush in, and sunlight fell onto the old sofa; nothing here had changed.

At eight o’clock in the evening, my mother’s call came in.

The moment I answered, a barrage of scolding burst through. “Olivia Clarke, why on earth did you move out? I heard you two are getting a divorce? What has Ezra ever done to you? He has a good career, and he treats you well! You’ve just been living too comfortably, and now you’re starting to act up!”

I held the phone, waiting for her to finish yelling at me. “Mom, he cheated.”

“Where’s the evidence? Show it to me! You were the one who said no person was found. You spent four years searching and haven’t found a single clue! Now you’re saying he cheated again. Cheated with whom?”

I closed my eyes. Even my own mother didn’t believe me, which made sense. Even I hadn’t believed myself over the last four years.

“Mom, I’ve signed the papers, so I’m getting this divorce. Don’t get involved in this.”

“Don’t you dare! If you get a divorce, I’ll disown you as a daughter!”

With that, she hung up.

Holding my phone, I stood in the empty living room for a long time. Outside the window, the sky had turned dark.

Three days, and everything was taken care of. The asset inventory, the divorce papers, and a new place to live, along with a heart that was dead.

In the spring of the second year, I won an award. It was the top design award—the Gold Award. My winning entry was an urban renewal design plan for an old district, one I had poured my heart into over the course of the previous winter. On the day of the award ceremony, I stood on stage with the spotlight on my face. The host handed me the microphone and asked, “Olivia, over all these years, what would you say has been your greatest takeaway?”The audience fell silent. I paused to think for a moment, then spoke into the microphone. “Learning to trust my own judgment. Four years ago, everyone told me that my judgment was wrong, and even I ended up doubting myself for three whole years. Later on, I came to realize one crucial thing: when you have the facts, everyone else’s voices are nothing more than noise.”Applause echoed throughout the auditorium. Afterward, a reporter followed me backstage to ask whether I was referring to that widely known marriage of mine.I simply smiled. “

After the judgment, I stopped paying any attention to them. However, the internet did not let them off so easily.Every few days, updates on Ezra’s situation would trend. First, he was photographed working as a telephone sales representative in an office building. When a photo of his employee badge was leaked, the comment section made a joke out of it.[From director to cold caller, all in one step.]Later, he reached out to me through an old friend of mine.[Ezra said he knows he was wrong now. He asks if you can be the bigger person and stop everyone from staring at him.]I looked at the message, marked it as read, and didn’t reply.Three days later, he tried a different approach. He found a small media outlet and did an exclusive interview. The title was quite sensational, too. It was titled, “A Loser’s Confession: How I Ruined My Own Marriage.”In front of the camera, his eyes were bloodshot, and his voice trembled. “The person I owe the biggest apology to is my ex-wife. I a

On the day the verdict was delivered, I made a point to wear a red dress. The judge read the judgment slowly, and I heard every word loud and clear.“Divorce is granted. The defendant, Ezra Wright, is the party at fault and shall receive a smaller share of the joint marital assets in accordance with the law. Pre-marital assets shall remain with their respective owners. Two properties under the defendant’s name shall be evaluated and compensated to the plaintiff at equivalent value.“The case involving online cyber-trolls’ threats will be handled separately, and the third party, Nina Doherty, will bear the corresponding responsibility.”A week later, the judgment officially took effect. The division of assets went very quickly. Ezra’s lawyer was extremely cooperative this time, signing papers and transferring titles without any delays. When all was said and done, Ezra walked away with less than thirty percent of the assets. Someone did the math and posted it online. “He reimbursed

The day of the court hearing, the sky was clear and sunny. When I arrived, quite a few reporters were already crouching near the entrance. Ezra’s legal team—four men in crisp, tailored suits—were the first to arrive. Nina, named as the third party, sat on the other side with her head held low.The gavel struck, signaling the start of the trial. The lead attorney for the opposing side stood up first and spoke calmly, “Your Honor, this case is merely a standard divorce dispute stemming from emotional incompatibility. During their marriage, the two parties spent little time together and grew distant. My client agrees to the divorce but firmly rejects any unfounded allegations. The claim of a third party interfering in the marriage is purely the plaintiff’s speculation.”Frank stood up and simply said, “Whether it is speculation or not, please look at the evidence.”The first set of evidence was projected onto the large screen—flight bookings for a trip to Asper with both of their na

The day after the police filed the report for harassment, I posted my second update online. This time, it wasn’t nine pictures, but a complete timeline starting from eight years ago.The first section listed the transaction records of the financial sponsorship. There were ninety-six transfers over eight years, and not a single one was missing. After the date of each transaction, I noted down the final destination of the funds.“In September of Nina’s sophomore year, two thousand dollars in tuition fees were transferred to her. Three days later, five thousand dollars was transferred out to recipient Ezra Wright.”For four years, it went on like this every year. The second section was a comparison table of his fake business trips over the four years. Out of twenty-seven expenses claimed, twenty-three were proven to be fabricated. Attached to it were hotel bookings, flight tickets, and security camera screenshots. The third section contained records of the intimidation. There were s

At ten o’clock the next morning, I posted on Facebook. It was posted from a verified account, and the screenshots had been notarized by a lawyer. There were nine images neatly arranged in a grid. The first image showed a fake expense claim listing a trip to Crosstown, paired with a hotel booking confirmation from Asper. The second image showed an expense claim listing Danube City, paired with hotel receipt records from a resort in Pacific Beach. The third to seventh images contained a comparison chart of fake business trips, detailing twenty-seven trips over four years. The eighth image was an elevator surveillance screenshot showing Ezra with his arm around Nina. The ninth image showed the two names listed together on a single hotel reservation. The body of the post read, “No such person was found, but the affair is real.” I didn’t whine, ramble on, or defend myself. After posting it, I turned off my phone and went back to drafting my designs. At noon, Lindsey burst into the roo
