Chapter 2

Autor: Mohini
Half an hour after Connor left, my phone chimed.

Someone had sent me an anonymous video.

My mother, Roxie Boyce, who was supposedly paralyzed, appeared on the screen, beaming at my ex-fiancé and Carla's engagement party.

She slipped the emerald bracelet off her wrist and put it on Carla's. "Ariana's so domineering and unhinged. You've had to put up with so much from her all these years, my sweet goddaughter.

"I can't just stand by and watch her hurt you. As long as the two of you are happy, I'm willing to pretend I'm paralyzed for the rest of my life, so she won't have the energy to cause any more trouble."

My own mother had been scheming against me with every word.

I gripped my phone as my heart seized.

For the past three years, I'd worked three jobs at once to scrape together money for her medical bills, all in the hope that she might recover one day.

It turned out she'd had another daughter all along.

Resentment burned away my reason, and I followed the location in the video to find them.

Hearing the commotion at the door, Mom froze for a moment, then instinctively stepped in front of Carla.

"If you've got a problem, take it out on me. Don't hurt those two again. Tomorrow's their wedding."

My heart sank painfully, and I let out a self-mocking laugh. "So you faked being sick and lay in bed for three years, all for one wedding?"

She hadn't said a single word to me or spared me a single glance, and all the while, she'd been calling Carla her "daughter" behind my back.

Carla looked at me timidly, but she couldn't hide how well she was doing. She looked like a pampered little princess.

Mom yanked me toward her, tears streaming down her aging face. "Carla's father died young. I promised her dad that I'd take care of his daughter, and I can't go back on my word.

"Besides, haven't you been happy since you remarried? Connor treats you so well. What more could you possibly want?"

Right. What more could I possibly want?

She was willing to throw away her own daughter's lifelong happiness for the daughter of her first love.

So what did that make all the worry and guilt I'd carried for her all these years?

Carla took my hand in a show of friendliness, her voice thick with tears. "Ariana, I've always saved the officiant's spot for you. I don't want to lose you as a friend."

I pulled my hand away in disgust.

Before I could say anything, Connor and my ex-fiancé both stepped in front of Carla to shield her.

Connor's tone left no room for argument. "Come to the wedding tomorrow and be Carla's officiant. Otherwise, she'll be branded the other woman for the rest of her life, and her depression will never get better."

I said calmly, "She is the other woman."

"Enough." He cut me off sharply. "Carla has never tried to compete with you for anything. She just wants to marry for love. You're being way too hard on her."

As he spoke, he pulled out a stack of pixelated photos. I could vaguely make out my own face. "If you refuse to go, I'll leak these."

It suddenly came back to me that a few days ago, he'd been in an unusually playful mood and had coaxed me into letting him take a lot of intimate photos.

"Don't blame me for being ruthless. You did the same thing to Carla, after all. Let's just call it an eye for an eye."

I staggered back two steps and finally saw the man in front of me for the stranger he was.

Beside me, Mom kept shoving me, her eyes red from crying. "That was three years ago! Why can't you let it go?

"Carla's pure-hearted. She's not vicious like you. She can't handle anyone attacking her!"

The blood in my veins froze inch by inch. For the first time, I felt utterly alone.

I finally unclenched my fist. "Fine. I'll go to their wedding."

Connor froze, his eyes instantly turning red. "What... did you say?"I repeated myself, deadly serious. "I said, you disgust me."As I went to shut the door, Connor lost control and dragged me outside. "Please don't talk like that. I know you're just angry at me."Honestly, just knowing you're alive is enough to make me happy. I knew you'd never really leave me."As he said it, he moved to pull me into his arms the way he used to.But I wrenched myself free and kept my distance. "Don't touch me. You all lied to me for three years. Can't you just let me go?"Connor glanced around the villa. "So you're planning to live with another man for the rest of your life?"You're my wife. If people find out about this, how am I supposed to show my face?"I laughed mockingly. "You should've received the divorce papers by now, right? Once you sign them, I won't be your wife anymore."Connor was stunned for a moment, staring at me with resentment. "You want to divorce me just because I lied

Just as I was about to sink to the bottom of the river, a hand suddenly grabbed hold of me tight.Faintly, I heard a familiar voice. "Ariana."Before I could make out the person's face, I lost consciousness completely. When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed.The face that came into view belonged to my childhood friend, Edwin Qurell. Before I could say anything, Edwin broke down and pulled me into his arms, his voice hoarse. "Why would you do something so stupid? Do you have any idea how worried I was?"He looked into my eyes, his own red-rimmed. "If I hadn't spotted you, were you really going to give up on your life?"At that, the tears I'd been holding back for so long came flooding out.Once we'd both calmed down, I asked in confusion, "Weren't you overseas running your company? What are you doing back here?"Edwin lowered his gaze, his expression complicated. "I heard Bradley and Carla were getting married, and I figured you'd probably be there. I was sc

When Connor stumbled his way to the riverbank, all that remained in front of him was a pile of Ariana's belongings."Where's my wife?"The staff member shook his head helplessly. "Our search and rescue team is already looking, but they haven't found her yet. We may have to wait a little longer...""Wait for what?!" Connor was extremely agitated. "If you can't find her, send more people!"With that, he quickly called his assistant and had more people sent out to search the river for Ariana.Three hours passed without a single word.Connor sat on the riverbank, looking as if all the strength had been drained out of him.Just a few hours ago, Ariana had still been fighting with him. And then, in the blink of an eye, it had come to this...He pulled up the video circulating online again and went through Ariana's jump frame by frame. Her dress was stained with blood, and something about the way she looked was wrong.Holding back his fury, he called the family doctor. Connor had just finished calming Carla down and was about to close the car door when a commotion broke out not far away."Oh my God! Someone just jumped into the river!""She was even livestreaming it? That's terrifying!"Connor turned his head hesitantly. Just then, his executive assistant came stumbling over. "Mr. Magder, the woman who just jumped into the river..."It looks like it was your wife. And she was covered in blood...""What?!"He immediately sprinted to the riverbank, where a crowd had already gathered."Out of my way! That's my wife who jumped!"But the water seemed bottomless, and a wave of despair engulfed him.He and Ariana had been so close to getting back the life they used to have. They had once vowed to stay together forever. Why would Ariana jump into the river...Losing all reason, Connor was about to tear off his coat and jump in after her when Carla hurried over and pulled him back to safety. "Have you lost your mind? You can't swim!""Let go of m

Comments from the livestream flashed before my eyes.[Back in the old days, they would've strapped her to a ducking stool and dunked her in the river. A dog crate is letting her off easy.][That figure's gotta be at least a D cup, right? She looks just like a dog. Definitely homewrecker material.][So disgusting. Crashing someone's wedding and making a scene like that. She's trash, through and through.]The endless humiliation left me gasping for air.Carla lifted the hem of her gown, came over, and bent down to look at me. "Good doggy. Just bark once for me, and we'll call that your apology."The resentment I'd been bottling up for so long burned away my reason, and I spat right at her.Connor's face darkened instantly. "Are you sure you don't want to apologize to Carla?"I clenched my jaw and refused to say a single word.To my shock, the next second, he pulled that stack of intimate photos out of his pocket and waved them at me.In an instant, I felt as if I'd been struck

On the day of the wedding, Connor stood beside me, but his eyes never once left Carla. When she saw me arrive, she lifted the hem of her gown and walked over gracefully, smiling at me. "Ariana, I never imagined you'd actually come to my wedding one day."As she covered her mouth to laugh, I noticed the diamond ring on her finger: the Ocean of Stars.Three years ago, when Connor proposed to me, his hands had trembled as he slipped it onto my ring finger. He'd said it would keep me safe and bring me good fortune.Later, he said he was worried I might use the diamond to hurt myself, so he offered to keep it for me.So the person he'd wanted to protect had been someone else all along.Connor handed me the officiant's card he'd written in advance. "Just read from this when it's time."I stepped up onto the stage and opened the card.[It was only because of my mental illness that I came between the bride and groom and became an unforgivable homewrecker. Today, I wish to formally apol
