Chapter 1 Behind the Half-Open Door

Author: Joey Joe
I slipped the signed divorce agreement into an envelope and dropped it into the mailbox by the front door. But just as I turned to leave, I heard my mother's voice from inside.

"Ian, don't feel guilty about taking the position. I'm Jensen's mother, and I made the decision for him. We're all in agreement—the placement should go to you."

Even though I had already heard Natalie say that my family approved of everything, seeing it with my own eyes still made my heart ache.

My feet refused to move, as though they had taken root in the ground. Through the crack in the door, I watched my mother carry steaming platters of seafood from the kitchen and set them on the table one after another.

"Ian, I remembered that lobster's your favorite. I bought plenty today just to celebrate you getting the placement. Eat as much as you like. Don't be shy."

She had never shown me that kind of care. Growing up, she could not even remember that I was allergic to peaches, yet she remembered someone else's favorite food without fail.

At the dinner table, my younger sister, the one I had treasured since she was little, raised her glass to Natalie.

"Natalie, you're incredible. To go this far for Ian… I really admire you."

Natalie had spread rumors that ruined my reputation, yet not a single member of my family had spoken up for me.

Unable to stop myself, I looked toward the head of the table, desperate to see who possessed such unbelievable influence over the people closest to me. The moment I saw the man sitting there, the blood in my veins seemed to freeze.

It was Ian Talbot, the very same volunteer teacher who had been assigned with me to the mountain village three years ago.

Just last week, we had a bitter falling-out after he secretly withdrew my nomination for Outstanding Teacher, causing me to miss the selection entirely. In the end, the title had gone to him instead.

Without any evidence to expose what he had done, all the hard work I had put into that school over the past three years had amounted to nothing.

I had lost my temper and punched Ian during the argument. For that, the school suspended me, and even my students had started looking at me differently.

When I had called my mother to tell her what had happened, she had cursed Ian over the phone, calling him shameless. Now, she was personally picking out the tender fish belly for him.

My younger sister had cried for me back then, insisting she would report the matter to the Department of Education and help me seek justice. Now, she was presenting Ian with an expensive gift she had carefully prepared.

As for Natalie, my wife of three years, she accepted everyone's teasing with a smile before leaning over and planting a kiss on Ian's cheek. "I knew you could do it."

A sharp pain twisted through my chest. For a brief moment, my vision went black, and I nearly collapsed.

Just then, my phone rang.

Taking a deep breath, I answered it and realized the call was from the rural school where I had been teaching. "Mr. Slater, in recognition of your dedication over the past three years, the school has approved your requested transfer. You'll be reassigned to a restricted research institute in the northwest. We've already booked your ticket for tomorrow, so please keep an eye out for the confirmation text."

Listening to the voice on the other end, I could not help finding the whole situation painfully ironic.

After losing the Outstanding Teacher award, I had submitted a transfer request in a moment of anger. I had spent the entire night afterward lying awake, wondering how I should explain everything to my wife.

It turned out she had already chosen someone else.

I no longer wanted to stay there. Dragging my heavy feet, I turned to leave. But before I could get far, someone hurried out after me and called my name.

"Jensen? Is that you? Did you come to congratulate me on getting the doctoral family placement position too?"

My mother and my sister were standing by the elevator. I had no idea how long they had been there or how much they had overheard. But the moment my mother saw Ian, she stormed over and slapped him across the face."I should've guessed it! A heartless ingrate like you, someone who threw me out the moment you got what you wanted, could never have been the good man who helped me through my darkest days."My sister stood nearby, too ashamed to meet my eyes. "Jensen… I'm sorry. I jumped to conclusions and thanked the wrong person for saving my life…"The apartment dissolved into chaos.I quietly stepped aside, avoiding the hands my mother and sister reached out toward me.Then, after remaining silent the entire time, Natalie slowly rose to her feet and walked toward Ian.Seeing the look on her face, Ian's expression turned pale as he instinctively shuffled backward. "Natalie… What are you doing? I'm your savior's husband! Don't do anything rash!"This time, Natalie showed no mercy. S

  • No Way Back   Chapter 6 Every Lie Comes Due

After much persuasion from my supervisor, I returned to the city where I had spent half my life a few days later, but I kept my return quiet. After getting off the plane, I checked into a small, out-of-the-way hotel instead of going home. I stayed there for several days without alerting anyone. Only after the institute helped me gather part of the evidence I needed did I finally head toward the house that had once felt so familiar.Natalie opened the door. The moment she saw me, unmistakable joy flashed across her face. "Jensen… you're finally back!"Hearing her voice, Ian hurried out from inside the house as well.Following my gaze, she immediately grew flustered. "Jensen, I already explained everything in my messages. There's really nothing between us. He just has nowhere else to go, so he's been staying here temporarily. Don't get the wrong idea."She had had countless opportunities to tell me the truth before, but she never had. She had also had countless ways to repay Ian a

After leaving Riverton, I threw myself into the vast northwestern wilderness. The skies here were filled with blowing sand, and the research institute stood in lonely isolation. For dozens of miles in every direction, there was not another soul in sight.I buried myself in research data, determined to regain the level of expertise I had once had three years ago. Keeping myself occupied left me with little time to dwell on the things I would rather forget.Even so, nightmares still found me from time to time.Sometimes I dreamed of being coiled tightly in the grip of a giant python, unable to breathe. Other times I dreamed that my hands were covered in painful frostbite during the dead of winter. The itching became unbearable, and I would scratch until my palms were streaked with blood. Also, occasionally, I would hear people accusing me of cheating on my wife, but I could never make out their faces. All I saw were countless fingers pointed at me as they denied everything I had eve

Natalie spent the entire night at Ian's bedside, never once closing her eyes. Only after his breathing gradually settled into a steady rhythm did her mind drift back to everything that had happened the previous night. When Jensen threw his wedding ring away, she stood stupefied. Ian had immediately insisted on going to find Jensen in person, saying he wanted to apologize and bring him back.At first, Natalie had wanted to go with him."You have a heart condition. I don't want him to lose his temper and hurt you. Ian, if anything happens to you, I'll never forgive myself. I wouldn't even have the courage to face Bianca after I die. If she hadn't sacrificed herself to save me during the lab explosion, I wouldn't have everything I have today."To her surprise, however, Ian had been unusually firm."It's fine, Natalie. Jensen's probably gone back to the staff dormitory. The mountain roads are dangerous at night, so there's no need for all of you to make another trip."Unable to persu

I stared blankly at my mother.I had always known she had never loved me as much as I had wanted her to. But this was the first time she had ever struck me with such force. All to protect the man who had come between my marriage."Jensen, how could you insult Ian like that?" my sister snapped. "Just because you cheated doesn't mean everyone else is as morally impaired as you are."I looked at my younger sister, standing so self-righteously beside my wife, helping her spread lies about me, and found myself unable to describe what I felt.Just three years earlier, at my wedding to Natalie, she had cried harder than anyone. She had clung to me, saying she could not bear to see her brother leave home.Perhaps she could not stand the way I was looking at her now. Slowly, she turned her face away, avoiding my eyes.Everything had changed.Silently, I slipped the wedding ring off my finger for the first time in three years. The years under the mountain sun had left my skin deeply tann

  • No Way Back   Chapter 2 The Truth They Refused to Hear

As Ian led me into the house, the atmosphere around the dinner table immediately turned tense. With an easy smile, he offered me a cigarette, looking as harmless as ever."After what happened last week, I thought you still held a grudge against me. You weren't happy that I won Outstanding Teacher, and you even punched me in front of everyone. But since you came to my celebration today, why don't we put all of that behind us?"If I had not caught him destroying my nomination form with my own eyes that day, I never would have believed he could wear two completely different faces depending on who was watching. But before I could say a word, a sharp slap landed across my face."Jensen Slater! Is this how I raised you? How could you hit someone in public?"The one who struck me was my own mother."When my flower shop ran into financial trouble, and I asked you for help, you refused to lend me a single cent. It was Ian, a man who wasn't even related to us, who generously lent me a lar
