Chapter 3 The Real Diamond

Author: Mohini
My ears started ringing.

I swallowed hard before forcing the words out. "That's impossible. You offered to buy this ring from me before. You said it was worth two million."

The jeweler hesitated. "The ring you wore at your wedding was absolutely real, Mr. Fraser. But this one..."

He cleared his throat and added, "This one is fake. I'm sure of it."

My mind went completely blank.

Then, I opened Nathan's Instagram, almost out of instinct alone.

A few days ago, he'd posted a photo of a diamond ring. I hadn't thought much of it then, but now the caption beneath it made my stomach turn.

"Fake people deserve fake diamonds; real love gets the real thing. I guess this is what it feels like to be the favorite."

My hand started shaking as I saved the photo and sent it straight to the jeweler.

A few minutes later, his reply came through.

"This diamond is real."

I stared at the words on the screen.

It was my diamond. The same one Melissa had slipped onto my finger when she promised I would be the only man she'd ever call her husband.

And now, she'd given it to Nathan.

It felt like something had closed around my heart and squeezed. I could barely breathe.

I was still staring at the photo when the bedroom door opened. Melissa walked in with a scowl on her face. "Do I not give you enough? What the hell possessed you to try to sell your wedding ring?"

She noticed my red-rimmed eyes and apparently assumed they were from the beating. So, her stiff expression softened slightly. "If you really need money, then do something for me tomorrow."

I looked up at her.

"It's my mother's birthday gala. Let Nathan attend as my husband. It'll make her happy." She said it as casually as if she were asking me to lend him a jacket. "When it's over, I'll give you 30 million."

I stared at her, barely able to believe what I was hearing.

Once again, Melissa was putting a price on something I'd once believed meant everything to us.

Whatever warmth I still had left for her disappeared.

I told myself, 'Melissa, once I bury Mom and that plane takes me away, you and I are finished for good.'

…

The next evening, I arrived at the Mills Estate for her mother's birthday gala.

Relatives who used to greet me warmly barely acknowledged me when I walked in. The very few who did only bothered long enough to jeer at me.

"He can't even hold on to his place as Melissa's husband. Yet, he still had the nerve to show up?"

"Mrs. Mills never liked him anyway. He brings nothing to the family. Even worse, they have to pay his mother's medical bills. The two of them have been leeching off the Mills family for years."

"He should've stepped aside sooner. Maybe Melissa would've paid him more to disappear."

Their mocking laughter followed me as I made my way through the room, but I didn't flinch.

Across the room, I saw Nathan standing with one arm draped around Melissa's waist. The diamond ring on his finger was the Blue Star—my ring.

Now that I was seeing things without the rose-tinted glasses, I realized it suited him perfectly.

Nathan caught me staring and smiled. "Mr. Fraser, maybe I'll ask Ms. Mills to give you a little spending money later."

His eyes swept over my wrinkled clothes before returning to my weary face. "Next time, buy yourself something decent to wear. This is Mrs. Mills' birthday, after all. You could've at least brought her a proper gift."

Everyone's attention immediately shifted to the fruit basket in my hand upon hearing his words.

Melissa's expression darkened. "My mother has treated you well all these years, and this is how you repay her? Do you have no shame?"

I almost laughed, thinking, 'I don't even have a penny left in my account. What exactly does she expect me to buy?'

I was about to set the basket down and leave when a loud crash sounded behind me.

I turned to find the antique jade serving platter Nathan had been holding shattered across the marble floor.

"Oh, God!" Nathan exclaimed, his eyes wide with shock. Then, he turned to me, his expression quickly shifting to hurt.

"Mr. Fraser, that was for Mrs. Mills. I know you don't like me, but you didn't have to ruin her birthday because of it."

His voice trembled just enough to make the accusation sound convincing.

Every disgusted stare and frown in the room shifted to me just like that.

Melissa's mother sank back into her chair, visibly furious.

Nathan quickly lowered his head.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Mills. I should've been more careful." Then, he gave her an apologetic smile. "It was worth several million, but don't worry. I'll replace it."

Melissa immediately turned to comfort him. "You were only trying to do something nice for her. None of this is your fault."

However, the tenderness in her expression vanished when her eyes fell on me. She had always had the final say in the Mills family, and this time was no different.

"You broke the platter, so you'll pay the three million it cost."

A bitter laugh escaped me. "You seriously think I have three million?"

She paused at my retort. Then, she shrugged as if the answer were obvious. "Sell your mother's house if you're so strapped for cash. You were willing to sell your wedding ring, weren't you? What's one run-down old house?"

Melissa's voice was so hoarse that I probably wouldn't recognize it if we weren't seeing each other face-to-face.For a moment, she just stood there, drinking me in. Then, she started rambling, almost as though she feared I'd walk away if she stopped."I heard about your company. You finally did it. You built the empire you always wanted." She swallowed hard before biting the bullet and asking, "Josh... do you hate me?"I said nothing."Do you hate me because I failed your mother? Because I failed you?" Her voice cracked. "Because I tried so hard to keep you with me that I made your life miserable?"She looked at me helplessly. "Why didn't you tell me? You should've told me sooner."I lowered my head and let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "Hate you?" I shook my head. "I stopped hating you a long time ago. There's no love left between us, Melissa. How could hate exist without love?"A tear slid down her cheek as she nodded slowly, almost as if she were forcing herself to accept my

  • Nothing Left to Return To   Chapter 7 Three Years Later

Three years had passed since I left the country with Rachel Quinn, and somehow it felt as if my life had finally come full circle. One afternoon, we were sitting in a cafe when Rachel took a sip of her coffee and started reminiscing."You told me you never wanted to see me again," she said snarkily, giving me a knowing look. "Then, you ended up being the one to contact me first. That was when I knew things had gone to hell for you.""It did, but I still made it." I turned toward the window and watched people moving through the busy streets of Pemberton. "It took me too long to realize I'm better off relying on myself. Having to hold out my hand and ask someone else for money every time I needed something..." I trailed off, inhaling deeply. Then, I turned to her and shook my head. "Anyway, I never want to live like that again."Rachel cocked an eyebrow at me in agreement. The irony didn't escape me.Back then, I'd sacrificed every last shred of dignity just to pay for my mother

Melissa couldn't help but wonder, 'Why is Josh at the airport? Where is he going, and who is he with?'Those questions raced through her mind as she hurried to the airport. By the time she got there, the man who had found Josh's phone was still there, waiting for her."Where is he?" she asked, rushing toward him. "You saw him, didn't you? Was he okay?"The man thought it over for a moment before replying, "Well, he looked pretty badly hurt. Guy looked like he'd been through the wringer."Melissa's face went pale."But there was a woman with him," he added. "She was helping him through security.""A woman?""Yeah. I tried calling after him, but they were already on their way to the gate."He handed Josh's phone to Melissa and left, leaving her standing in the middle of the terminal with even more questions than before. She wanted to feel relieved that I had made it onto a plane despite my injuries, but all she could focus on was the woman with him.I didn't have many friends a

"What did you just say?" Melissa whispered in disbelief. She felt her muscles lock up one after another as she stared at the death certificate on her screen, the words refusing to sink in."Ms. Mills, your mother-in-law passed away some time ago. We assumed Mr. Fraser would tell you himself, so we didn't contact you separately."The hospital staff member hesitated before continuing, "It's very unfortunate. She took her own life. Her treatment had actually been going well. There was a real chance she could've recovered."Each word hit Melissa harder than the last."That's impossible." She shook her head, struggling to make sense of what she was hearing. "Josh never told me. Something this serious happened, and he... he didn't say a word?"She couldn't make sense of it.After all, I had always relied on her for everything. I used to FaceTime her from stores because I couldn't decide which shirt to buy without asking for her opinion.I told her everything, yet I never breathed a w

I just stood there like a statue for several seconds, unable to process what Melissa had said.My mother had worked hard her entire life just to raise me. When I married Melissa, she had poured nearly everything she had into helping me build a life of my own. After her passing, that house was the only thing she left behind.I hadn't been able to do much for her while she was alive, but I refused to let anyone take the last thing I had left of her."No."My voice came out firmer than I expected.Melissa scoffed. "You'll do anything for money. You tried to sell your wedding ring, and you let Nathan take your place as my husband for a price. So, why are you suddenly getting sentimental over some run-down old house?"She crossed her arms against her chest. "Your mother spent years in a private hospital suite that cost 3,000 dollars a day. After everything my family spent keeping her alive, that measly house doesn't even begin to cover it."Blood rushed to my head, and my whole body
