The receptionist looked up. Her face was polit

LYDIA'S POVHis mother had a small house on the outskirts of the city. This was smaller than the one we had visited during her party but standard. The lawn was overgrown, the curtains were drawn. She had not been the same since the kidnapping.Ethan knocked. A young woman in housekeeping uniform opened the door after a long pause. Her eyes were tired, and her hands were shaking."Who is she?" I whispered into Ethan's ear."That's my mum's maid."We walked in. His mum was seated in the living room."Hey, Mum. This is Lydia. Remember her, right?" Ethan asked. "From your birthday party." He stopped and looked at me. "She is a friend."His mother looked at me, then at Ethan, without saying a word. We sat in her living room. The air was stale. The windows were closed. She wrapped her arms around herself and rocked slightly."I know this is hard," I said. "But we need your help."She looked at me. "Help with what?""The woman who took you. Nina. We are trying to build a case against her. We

She used to work here."The receptionist typed on her keyboard, scrolled, and shook her head."She no longer works here. Her file was closed two years ago.""Closed?" I asked, leaning forward."Terminated. She stopped showing up without a call or notice. Nothing."I stood there for a moment. The air in the office felt cold. LYDIA'S POVI couldn't sleep. How could I? I laid on my old bed, staring at the ceiling, running through everything Ethan said. "She walked into her own trap." I held onto those words like a lifeline. It felt like a dream come true.I got dressed and went downstairs. Sandra was in the kitchen with Noah, fixing his backpack. Mum was at the stove, flipping pancakes."Morning, baby," she said. "Sit and eat."I sat at the table. Noah climbed into my lap. He was already in his school uniform, his hair combed, his cheeks still pink from sleep."Mama, are you staying here today?""I have to go to work, baby. But I will see you tonight."He pouted. Then he kissed my cheek and ran to Sandra. She took his hand and led him out the door. The house went quiet immediately. My mother set a plate in front of me. I looked at the pancakes. I was not hungry."You need to eat," she said with her hands on her waist."Mum, I'm not a child." I picked up my fork."Not in here, Barrister. Now tell me what is

LYDIA'S POVI could not breathe. I needed space, far away from the office and the apartment. I called Maya and told her I was sick."Please take care of yourself. I will report back to Mr. David as soon as you hang up," Maya said.I packed a few things and drove to my mother's house. The city fell away behind me. Trees replaced buildings. The road got quieter. My hands were still shaking on the wheel. I had not stopped shaking since the conference room, since Nina's eyes burned at me like they were going to swallow me any moment. My mother opened the door just when I was about to knock for the second time. She took one look at my face, pulled me inside, and hugged me tightly.I couldn't hold back the tears. They burned my eyes. I could barely see anymore."Baby," she said. "Don't say a word. You are in Mama's arms now. Don't be hard on yourself."She took me in and gave me a cup of coffee. We sat at the kitchen counter, and then she asked, "Can you talk now?"I told her everything. Da

Whether you like it or not, how could you kiss another woman in front of her?""I was not kissing another woman. I was kissing my wife.""Your ex-wife." He blurted.
