LYDIA'S POV

I picked my phone off the floor. The screen was cracked but still working. I tried to type a message to Ethan with my shaking hands.

"Ms. Claire is gone. Nina took her."

He called before I could put the phone down.

"Where are you?"

"At my office." I sobbed.

"Stay there. I am coming."

"No, let's meet at the detective's office. Now."

"That's better." He hung up.

I grabbed my bag and walked out. Maya called after me. I didn't look back.

  • OBSESSED WITH MY EX-WIFE    Chapter 63 — BREATHE OF FRESH AIR

LYDIA'S POVI had not moved from my chair in two hours. My laptop was open. The cursor was blinking on a document I had not touched. The Hartwell file was on the left side of my desk, exactly where Maya had put it that morning, and I had not opened it. The coffee she brought at nine was cold on the right side. I had my head leaned back and my eyes on the ceiling, doing nothing.Just sitting, breathing, and being a woman in a quiet office with no fear for the first time since this whole drama started. The door swung open.Maya walked in, took one look at me, looked at the cold coffee, looked at the untouched file, and put her bag on the chair across from my desk."Get up," she said."I am working." I sat up."You have been staring at the ceiling for two hours. I have a camera angle from my desk that catches your reflection in the window." She picked up my bag from the floor and set it on the desk in front of me. "Get up. We are going to breakfast.""Maya, it is eleven thirty.""Brunch

LYDIA'S POVMy phone rang at 2:47 am.I was not asleep. I had been staring at the ceiling since midnight with Noah's photograph — the one cut in half — sitting in my memory like a splinter I could not reach. I grabbed the phone before the second ring.It was an unknown number. I almost didn't answer."Hello?"There was silence, then breathing. Then a voice so low I pressed the phone hard against my ear just to catch it."Ms. Shaw?"I sat up. "Ms. Claire?"She sobbed. Then — "I got out. I don't know how long I have. I found a phone in a drawer and I just—""Where are you? Are you hurt?""I don't know where I am exactly. There's a laundromat across the street. The sign says Bright Clean. I tiptoed my way out when she left and the men fell asleep.""Stay there. Do not move. Lock yourself in the bathroom if you have to. I am coming."I was already out of bed before she hung up. I called Ethan. He picked up immediately, like he had not been sleeping either."Ms. Claire is alive. She escape

He was sweating."Ms. Shaw," the detective said. "What is going on?"I showed him the message. He read it, placed the phone on his desk, and leaned back in his chair."You did not go to the police station," I said. "You said you would assign someone. But no one came. Now she is gone.""I will handle this. First, we need to go to the principal."******Mrs. Bell was at her desk. She stood when we walked in."Ms. Shaw? Did you hear the news?""Ms. Cl

  • OBSESSED WITH MY EX-WIFE    Chapter 60 — “DILEMMA”

LYDIA’S POVI drove home. My mother was in the kitchen. Noah was watching cartoons in the living room. He ran to me when I walked in."Mama!"I picked him up and held him tight."Did you have a good day, baby?""Yes. Grandma made cookies."I looked at my mother. She smiled, but her eyes remained low. I put Noah down, and he ran back to the TV.My mother followed me to the kitchen."Any news?""We have her voice on a recording. She agreed to meet the teacher, but she hung up.""So, is that good or?""It is not enough."My mother touched my face. "You will get her, baby. I know you will."I nodded. I tried to believe her.**********That night, I could not sleep. I lay in my old bed and stared at the ceiling. My phone was on the pillow beside me. I picked it up and listened to the recording again."I will think about it." Her voice was calm and controlled. But there was something underneath — like she was scared and aware.I put the phone down, closed my eyes, and forced myself to sleep.

  • OBSESSED WITH MY EX-WIFE    CHAPTER 59 — THE EVIDENCE

LYDIA'S POVHis mother had a small house on the outskirts of the city. This was smaller than the one we had visited during her party but standard. The lawn was overgrown, the curtains were drawn. She had not been the same since the kidnapping.Ethan knocked. A young woman in housekeeping uniform opened the door after a long pause. Her eyes were tired, and her hands were shaking."Who is she?" I whispered into Ethan's ear."That's my mum's maid."We walked in. His mum was seated in the living room."Hey, Mum. This is Lydia. Remember her, right?" Ethan asked. "From your birthday party." He stopped and looked at me. "She is a friend."His mother looked at me, then at Ethan, without saying a word. We sat in her living room. The air was stale. The windows were closed. She wrapped her arms around herself and rocked slightly."I know this is hard," I said. "But we need your help."She looked at me. "Help with what?""The woman who took you. Nina. We are trying to build a case against her. We

DAVID'S POVThe apartment was too quiet and unsafe. Nina had been gone for days. Her things were still there. I had called her twelve times. She never took any of my calls.I paced the living room, sat on the couch, stood up, took my phone, dropped it back down, walked to the window. The city was bright and busy. I grabbed my jacket and left. The agency was on 5th Street, the one that sent Nina to my house. I parked across the street and walked in.The receptionist looked up. Her face was polite but distracted."Can I help you?""I am looking for someone. Nina Lawson. She used to work here."The receptionist typed on her keyboard, scrolled, and shook her head."She no longer works here. Her file was closed two years ago.""Closed?" I asked, leaning forward."Terminated. She stopped showing up without a call or notice. Nothing."I stood there for a moment. The air in the office felt cold. I turned and walked out.She had been planning this for a long time. I drove to a detective counse
