Ellie

When I made it to my first class Monday morning, I already knew something was completely wrong. From the way two girls from my chem lab went quiet when I walked past them in the hallway, their eyes flicking to me and then to each other. It was in the way a guy I barely recognized from Nathan’s dorm building did a double take when he passed me on the stairs, like he was trying to place my face.

I told myself I was imagining it. I was still exhausted, still hungover from everything and that painful headache, headachy way that made everything feel a little unreal, and my brain was clearly still spinning from the events of Friday night and the hockey game, Kyle. Lisa. Nathan. It was enough to make anyone paranoid.

I was just imagining things, no one cared that I hooked up with Nathan, he hooked up with everyone, it's college everyone was having sex.

But then I sat down in the dining hall for breakfast, and I heard it.

“—I’m telling you, someone saw a girl leaving Nathan Black’s room Sunday morning,” a girl at the next table was saying, not even bothering to lower her voice. “Like, walk-of-shame leaving. Smudged makeup, the whole thing, I heard she looked like she got run over by a truck.”

“That’s not exactly breaking news,” her friend said, rolling her eyes. “Girls leave his room every weekend.”

“Yeah, but apparently this one wasn’t one of his usual girls. Someone said she looked upset. Like she’d been crying, and a little like a nerd.”

My stomach dropped straight through the floor.

I kept my eyes on my tray, pushing my scrambled eggs around with my fork like they’d suddenly become the most interesting thing in the world. My hands had gone cold. I hadn’t cried in front of anyone that morning I was sure of that much, my eyes were a bit puffy but I wasn't crying, but I hadn’t exactly been in top form either, stumbling out of his dorm with my hair a mess and my makeup from the night before still smeared under my eyes.

Someone had seen me. Or seen enough of me to start wondering.

“Ellie?”

I nearly jumped out of my skin. Judy dropped into the seat across from me, her tray clattering down a little too hard, and I forced my face into something neutral.

“Hey,” I said. “You’re up early.”

“I had a nine a.m., unfortunately,” she said, stabbing at her yogurt. Then she paused, and I watched something shift behind her eyes, a hesitation that didn’t belong to Judy, who always just said whatever she was thinking the second she thought it. “So, um. Weird question.”

My pulse spiked. “Okay.”

“Were you at Nathan Black’s place Saturday night?”

I laughed. It came out too fast, too high, entirely unconvincing even to my own ears.

“What? No. Why would you think that?”

“I don’t know, it’s just—” Judy glanced around like she was making sure no one else could hear, which only made it worse, because now I was sure everyone could hear. “There’s this whole thing going around. Someone said they saw a girl matching your description leaving his dorm Friday morning. Dark hair, two ponytails, and you came home late and you looked like a wreck when we saw you.”

“There are a hundred girls on this campus with dark hair,” I said, and that part, at least, was true.

“Yeah, but how many of them have your ponytails?” Judy’s voice had an edge to it now.

“Ellie, if something happened, you can tell me. I’m not going to be weird about it. I just I

thought we told each other stuff.”

I stared at my eggs. I thought about Judy’s face outside the dining hall yesterday, lit up and giddy just from being near Nathan for thirty seconds. I thought about all the nights she’d spent watching his highlight reels, memorizing his stats, defending him to anyone who called him a player like it was a personal insult to her.

I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t tell her the truth not with Kyle’s betrayal still raw, not with the way Nathan’s eyes had looked right before I left his room, not with the shame sitting heavy and hot in my chest at the idea of anyone finding out I’d slept with a virtual stranger for revenge.

“I came home,” I said quietly. “After the party I went to clear my head at a bar because of what happened to Kyle and I came home, I told you that already.”

Judy studied me for a second too long, and something in her expression cracked not quite anger, more like disappointment, like I’d confirmed something she didn’t want confirmed. “Right,” she said. “Okay. Sorry, I just never mind.”

She went back to her yogurt, and neither of us said anything else, and the silence between us felt worse than any argument could have.

I felt Judy's eyes on me the entire walk back to the dorm that afternoon.

She hadn’t said a word about the rumors hadn’t even brought them up, which somehow felt more unsettling than if she had. Judy wasn’t the type to pry. She usually kept her nose in a book and let the world do whatever chaotic thing it wanted to do around her. But today she kept glancing at me sideways, over the top of her paperback, like she was cataloging something.

“What?” I finally snapped, when we reached our building.

“Nothing,” Joslyn said, far too evenly. She tucked a strand of dark hair behind her ear, and for just a second, her gaze dropped to my throat, then away again, like she was looking for something specific and hadn’t quite found it. “You just smell different, a more attractive perfume.”

“Excuse me?”

“Nothing,” she said again, and this time there was something almost amused in it, dry and knowing, the kind of look she got when she already had the answer to a question she hadn’t asked yet. “Forget I said anything.”

I didn’t forget. I thought about it the rest of the day, the strange weight of her attention, the way she’d looked at me like I was a puzzle missing a piece she could already see.

By evening, I told myself the whole thing would blow over. Rumors always did. People would get bored, find something else to talk about, and in a week no one would even remember there’d been a rumor about a girl leaving Nathan Black’s dorm.

I almost believed it.

Judy insisted we grab dinner at the campus grill before her study group, and I went along mostly to smooth things over after the awkwardness at breakfast. We were laughing about something stupid, Judy doing an exaggerated impression of our chem professor when we rounded the corner near the student union, and I heard my own name, and my whole body went rigid.

“Ellie!”

I turned, and there he was. Nathan, in a gray hoodie with his hockey bag slung over one shoulder, stopping mid-stride like he hadn’t expected to see me either, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my stomach flip.

Beside me, Judy went utterly still.

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 22: THE OLD ROUTINE

NathanMax waited until we were well clear of the party before he said anything, leading me down the block to where he’d parked, the noise of the house fading behind us into something more like distant static. I could still feel the alcohol humming through my system, blunting the edges of everything, but whatever Max had found out was apparently serious enough that he didn’t bother waiting for me to sober up first.“I’m all ears,” I said, leaning against the side of his car, arms crossed.“I made some calls after the thing in the woods,” Max said, glancing around the quiet street out of habit before he continued, the same reflexive caution I’d trained into every wolf under my protection since the day I took over this territory. “Called in a favor with a contact who used to run with Thornwood before he left a couple of years back. He confirmed it. They’re looking for a girl from a Specific bloodline, apparently, though he didn’t know the details just that whoever’s giving the orders wa

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 21: THE PARTY II

NathanI’d been ignoring it for too long. I knew that even before I walked into that party, even before the third drink I probably shouldn’t have had loosened whatever fraying grip I still had on my own restraint. I needed to figure out what Ellie actually was, she can't be just a human, not just some girl who’d wandered into my life at exactly the wrong moment, but something else, something that made my wolf sit up and take notice in a way it had never done for anyone before her.Mate. The word had been circling my head for weeks now, and I kept shoving it back down every time it surfaced, because accepting it meant admitting to something I wasn’t sure I had any right to claim. But it was there anyway, undeniable, humming low under my sternum every single time she got within twenty feet of me, an ache that sharpened into something almost unbearable whenever she was close enough to touch and I made myself keep my hands to myself anyway.I hadn’t meant to drink as much as I had that ni

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 20: THE PARTY

EllieI didn't want to go. After the phone call with my mom… the way she didn't want to tell me anything, the half explained mess about my grandmother wandering off from her care facility and turning up hours later three towns over, disoriented and unable to explain how she’d gotten there the last thing I wanted was to put on tight clothes and pretend to have a good time at some off-campus party. But Judy had shown up at my room that evening with her hair curled and two dresses draped over one arm, absolutely unwilling to take no for an answer.“You’ve been weird and stressed for weeks,” she said, holding up the shorter of the two dresses like it was a legal argument. “One night. That’s all I’m asking. We dance, we drink overpriced jungle juice out of a cooler, we forget about grandmothers and hockey captains and clinical rotations for like four hours. Then you can go back to being depressed.”“I’m not depressed.”“You’re a little depressed,” Joslyn said from the doorway, already dres

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 19: STUDY GROUP

NathanShe looked worried. I didn’t want to ruin the study group, I know how serious Ellie is about school, and that’s the last thing I wanted to be responsible for wrecking, on top of everything else I’d already put her through.“You’re doing it again,” Ellie said, glancing up at me over her article.“Doing what?”“Staring. Like you’re trying to solve a math problem written on my face.” She said it lightly, but there was an edge of real curiosity underneath it, like she actually wanted the answer this time instead of just calling me out on it.I hesitated, weighing how much of the truth I could afford to hand over without handing over everything. “I was thinking about something,” I admitted. “Not the project.”“Care to share with the group?”I almost didn’t. Every practical instinct in me said to deflect, to make a joke, to steer this conversation back toward something safe. But something about the quiet of the study room, the two of us tucked away from the rest of campus for the fir

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 18: STUDY GROUP

NathanI found out about the group project assignment the same way I found out about most things involving Ellie lately through some cruel, inconvenient twist of coincidence that felt less like chance and more like the universe actively conspiring to keep putting us in the same room whether either of us wanted it or not.Professor Halloway posted the pairings for our environmental science final project Tuesday morning, and I scrolled through the list on my phone half paying attention, already dreading whatever mediocre partner I’d get stuck with for the next three weeks, right up until I saw her name sitting next to mine.Black, Nathan….. Harper, Ellie.I stared at it for longer than I should have, some stupid, traitorous part of my chest doing something warm and hopeful that I immediately tried to shut down. She hadn’t spoken to me since the football field. Not one word, not a text, not so much as a glance in the hallways we occasionally crossed paths in, and I’d told myself that was

  • OFF LIMITS CAPTAIN   CHAPTER 17: WHAT THE TEA TOOK FROM ME

EllieI didn’t remember falling asleep. I only remembered the dream, vivid and relentless in a way that felt less like imagination and more like memory, though that made no sense at all given that nothing in it had ever actually happened to me.I was running. Barefoot, through a forest so dense the moonlight barely made it through the canopy above me, my lungs burning and my legs screaming with an exhaustion that felt entirely too real. Behind me, I could hear them not footsteps, not anything so ordinary as footsteps, but something lower and more guttural, something that moved on four legs instead of two, branches snapping under weight that didn’t belong to anything human.I didn’t look back. Some instinct deep in my chest told me that looking back was the one thing I couldn’t afford to do, that if I turned around even for a second I would see teeth and eyes reflecting moonlight and something that wanted to tear me apart before I ever made it out of these trees.I woke up gasping, tan
