Naomi Walker's degree slipped from her hand as she bolted out of the ceremony.

I clutched mine and shouted after her, "If you walk away today, don't come back to me!"

She paused for just a second, then disappeared into the crowd without looking back.

I stood there as the tassel on my graduation cap swayed before my eyes. All around me, there was laughter, shouting, and chaos.

The university president stood onstage with a microphone, looking from me to the direction Naomi had run, clearly at a loss for words.

Naomi's parents, George Walker and Andrea Willow, came over, their faces dark with anger.

George grabbed my hand. "Caspian, I'll drag that idiot girl back here right now!"

I shook my head and slowly kept my degree away.

"George, Andrea, let her go."

My parents looked even worse. My father, Frederick Abbott, had gone pale with anger, while tears streamed down my mother Claire Sutton's face.

"How did things end up like this? It's your graduation day—and your engagement celebration! What will people think of our family?" Mom said.

I stepped off the stage and took my mother's arm, saying, "Mom, Dad, I'll take you home."

The entire venue was in chaos.

Naomi's roommate, Ava Jackson, approached me nervously, fidgeting with her hands. "I'm sorry, Caspian. It's an emergency. I…"

I just looked at her without saying a word.

Ava had been Naomi's roommate for all four years of college, and she knew Luca Brown too. To both of them, he was someone who needed protecting.

But someone who truly needed protecting wouldn't choose the most important day of someone else's life to create a crisis.

I picked up my degree and walked away from what should have been a celebration.

My phone kept vibrating in my pocket, but I didn't answer.

I knew it was Naomi. She would explain and apologize. She would tell me Luca was in danger and that she couldn't just leave him.

After four years together, I knew exactly what she would say.

She had a strong sense of responsibility, especially toward people she believed she had hurt.

During our sophomore year, there was a discussion about financial aid for low-income students.

Naomi, the student council president, publicly questioned some of the documents Luca had submitted because she thought parts of them didn't add up.

Later, it turned out to be a misunderstanding. Luca had simply filled out the paperwork incorrectly.

But by then, he had become the laughingstock of the department, and Naomi had carried the guilt ever since. For two years, it had haunted her.

I used to think helping him was the right thing to do. She had made a mistake, so she should make it up to him.

But today, I finally realized that some of the things she did to make amends had crossed the line.

Back at the dorm, I took off my graduation gown and changed into my own clothes.

I knew Luca had been taken to the nearby hospital, so I grabbed my keys and headed there.

Naomi was exactly where I expected her to be—sitting beside his bed.

Luca lay there with an IV in his arm, pale and weak, his eyes closed.

Naomi held his hand tightly, her brow furrowed with worry.

After a brief pause, I walked toward them.

When she saw me, she jumped to her feet, guilt filling her eyes. "Caspian, you're here. I'm sorry about today—"

"How is he?" I cut her off, looking at Luca.

"The doctor says his condition has stabilized, but he's still weak and emotionally unstable."

I nodded. "That's good."

Then I turned to leave.

Naomi quickly reached out and grabbed my wrist.

"Caspian, please don't be mad. This happened because of me. I can't just ignore him. He's young, his family is struggling, and he has no one. He's already been through enough."

I pulled my hand away.

"Naomi, I'm not angry. I just realized that apparently, a junior you've known for two years matters more to you than the graduation day we were supposed to share."

  • On Graduation Eve, I Lost My Girlfriend   Chapter 10

Naomi held the microphone for a long time without saying a word. Finally, she said just one thing. "Thank you for being willing to marry me."…Years later, I graduated from postgraduate school and joined Yelena's law firm. We became coworkers, then got engaged, and eventually married.Everything fell naturally into place. My parents were thrilled, and Naomi's parents even sent us an expensive wedding gift through a mutual acquaintance. They said they still felt guilty for wasting four years of my life, but I told them it was all in the past. Two years into my marriage to Yelena, we had a child—a beautiful little girl with her mother's eyes and my nose. Yelena was a wonderful wife and an even better mother. She promised she would never miss a single moment of our daughter growing up. Years later, I heard about Naomi from Ava.I hadn't seen Ava in years. Then, by chance, we ran into each other at an alumni gathering. She told me that after graduation, Naomi had returne

"What do you want me to do? Take care of her? Comfort her? Tell her everything will be okay?" I shot back at Ava.Ava lowered her head. "I just thought… You were together for four years. You must have shared so much.""Ava, those four years meant nothing the moment she ran out of our graduation ceremony for another man," I said coldly.…I never saw Naomi again. When she was discharged, her parents came to pick her up. Apparently, she had started practicing writing with her left hand. It was awkward, and her handwriting was crooked. We caught sight of each other across the crowded hospital lobby once. She had lost so much weight. Her eyes were empty, and she looked ten years older.I turned away and stepped into the elevator with Yelena. For the first time in a long while, life seemed peaceful again. Yelena started dropping hints that she liked me. She brought me breakfast every morning, waited for me when I worked late, and asked me out to see new movies. I understood

"Caspian." Naomi's voice was hoarse.I placed the textbooks I'd used while preparing for my postgraduate entrance exams on her bedside table."This is the school's decision. Your enrollment will be preserved, but your hand…" I trailed off.She closed her eyes and said nothing. "The police have finished investigating the accident. Luca was mainly responsible for grabbing the steering wheel," I informed her.Still, she said nothing. "Luca is in the room next door. His parents are here too. They showed up in a luxury car, dressed head to toe in designer clothes."That finally got a reaction. She slowly turned to look at me. "So…" "It was all a lie," I said calmly. Tears began streaming down Naomi's face. "Caspian, I'm sorry."I looked calmly at her. "You don't owe me an apology. You should be sorry to yourself, to your parents who gave everything to raise you, and for the white coat you never got the chance to wear."I turned to leave. "Don't go!" She suddenly called a

I printed the photo of the SUV and put it in an envelope. Then I put the expensive watch my dad had given me into another envelope.I waited for Naomi at the south gate. She looked even more exhausted than the last time I'd seen her."Caspian." When she saw me, a flicker of happiness appeared in her eyes. I handed her the two envelopes. "One has the watch my dad gave me. It's authentic and worth a lot. The other is a cheap knockoff I bought from a street vendor for 500 dollars." Naomi stared at me, completely confused."Pick one. Give it to Luca," I said. She continued to look at me, bewildered. "Go ahead. Let's see if Luca is worth the real thing or the fake."With that, I shoved the envelopes into her hands and walked away. Naomi didn't follow after me.…The next day, I boarded the train with Yelena's team for our field research. I thought that was the end of it, but a week later, Ava called me. Her voice was trembling, almost breaking into tears. "Caspian… Pl

"There's nothing wrong with it ending. Besides, my son, you're a great catch. You'll have no trouble finding someone," Dad said to comfort me.Naomi's parents came to see me, too. Their eyes were filled with disappointment, and they seemed to have aged in the time we hadn't met."Caspian, Naomi was in the wrong. We failed as parents. We're sorry."I shook my head. "It's not your fault, George, Andrea. This is between Naomi and me.""That Luca…" Andrea hesitated, looking miserable. "We know everything. That idiot girl let him stay with her. We tried to stop her. We yelled at her and even grounded her, but she acted like she'd lost her mind. She said we didn't understand her and that we were heartless.""Andrea, let it go," I said.Everyone had to live with their choices. Naomi chose this so-called responsibility, and now she had to face the consequences. ...I started deliberately avoiding Naomi and Luca, choosing to pour all my time and energy into Yelena's research project.

  • On Graduation Eve, I Lost My Girlfriend   Chapter 5

After I broke up with Naomi, I didn't tell anyone—not even my parents. I also moved back into the dorms. Naomi never reached out, perhaps because she was too busy caring for her junior. She probably thought I was just throwing a tantrum and would get over it in a few days. Life went on, and classes went on. But the campus was small, and sooner or later, I'd run into them. Naomi was always with Luca—helping him find sources at the library one day, saving him a seat in the cafeteria the next. He was practically glued to her, and she let him be.Whenever we crossed paths, Naomi would look away. Her lips would move like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out. Then she'd frown and turn away. Luca always kept his head down, looking like the victim. That semester, our law school hired a new visiting lecturer, Yelena Summer. She was young and had just returned from a top international law firm. One day, Naomi brought Luca to sit in on her class. In the previous lectu
