Chapter 2

Author: Hunk Alert
When I met Madison, Stella had already been with me for five years.

Madison used to call it cute. Sometimes, she'd even pat its head.

That changed when we started talking marriage and she spent her first night in my tiny apartment.

The next morning, she woke up sneezing, eyes red, and told me she had a severe cat allergy.

"Lugh, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, but my condition..." She looked helpless. "You know if you love me, you'll think about my health, right?"

After weeks of stress and hesitation, I finally started looking for a new home for Stella.

Before I found one, Madison said she'd already handled it.

It was done.

No matter how much I hated it, I had no choice but to accept it.

But two weeks later, I found Stella's body in a reeking underground parking garage.

It had been tortured to death.

Its body was torn apart and scattered in a filthy corner.

I only recognized it by a small patch of orange-and-white fur.

That day, I held what was left and cried in that parking garage until I collapsed.

I called Madison and demanded the adopter's name.

She stayed quiet for a long time.

Then she said softly, "I'm sorry, Lugh.

"I found them online. I just wanted the problem gone fast.

"I was scared you wouldn't let go, so I lied."

It felt like lightning split me open.

That was the first time I questioned us.

In the end, I forgave her.

With enough sweet words and promises, I let myself believe her.

I told myself she loved me.

That she cared about our future.

I blamed Stella's death on my own stupidity.

My own weakness.

The guilt and grief stayed buried inside me like a poisoned thorn for ten years.

For ten years, I never touched another cat.

And now, with a single photo, Madison had shown me the truth.

My decade of self-punishment.

My guilt.

My pain.

Stella's horrific death.

None of it had mattered.

It had all been a joke.

Something flashed across Madison's face.

Like she finally remembered.

But she still refused to back down.

"That was years ago. Medicine's better now. There are allergy pills. If I take them, I'm fine."

"Allergy pills?" I laughed.

My eyes burned. "So you'd rather take medication every day than keep his cat out of your office.

"But my Stella wasn't allowed a single corner of our home?"

"That's different!" she shot back, her voice rising. "Stella was just a mixed-breed cat. It shed everywhere and wasn't clean. Ryan's cat is purebred. It's well-behaved, and—"

"And what?" I cut her off. "And he's Ryan, while I'm just Lugh. Isn't that it?"

She didn't answer.

The color drained from her face.

Ten years.

Because of her so-called allergy, I never once thought about getting another pet.

Our floors were spotless.

Not a single stray hair anywhere.

I lived like a machine, following every one of her rules for cleanliness and health.

And now she was telling me all of it could've been fixed with a tiny pill.

So it wasn't that the allergy couldn't be managed.

I just wasn't worth the effort.

When she realized I wasn't backing down, the irritation in her eyes slowly hardened into anger.

And embarrassment.

"Lugh, stop this. We've been married for ten years. Are we really getting divorced over a cat? What will people think?

"And Bella? Have you even thought about Bella? She's only five. How can she grow up without a father?"

Bella.

The name tasted bitter in my mouth.

"Madison, be honest with yourself.

"Does Bella even need me as her father anymore?"

The color drained from Madison's face.

Without my constant care—and without Ryan's fake affection, which was nothing but treats and toys—Bella's spoiled attitude spun completely out of control. She threw screaming tantrums and rolled on the floor whenever Madison wouldn't buy her a toy.If she didn't like the food, she knocked the whole meal onto the floor. And late at night, she'd cry for her dad.Cillian heard about it through the grapevine and passed it on.Once, he even sent me a photo. The living room was trashed. Broken toys and food scraps covered the floor.Madison slumped on the couch, hands buried in her hair, looking wiped out.Bella stood in front of her, hands on her hips, yelling like a spoiled brat. The irony was brutal.Madison used to say I didn't know how to raise a child. That I couldn't even compare to some outsider. Now, the little monster she had created was all hers.I looked at the photo and felt nothing. No satisfaction.Just calm indifference.Everything that happened came from her o

The court date came fast. The judge looked at me. "Mr. Landon, are you still seeking a divorce from Ms. Seidel?""Yes, Your Honor."My voice carried through the silent courtroom. The judge nodded and turned to Madison. "Ms. Seidel, do you oppose the divorce?"Madison shot to her feet. "Yes, Your Honor. I do. We've been married for ten years. Our marriage can't just end like this. I know I made mistakes, but I'm willing to change. Please give us another chance."Her attorney tugged her sleeve, urging her to sit.The judge's expression didn't change. "Since Ms. Seidel opposes the divorce, we'll move on to custody and division of marital assets."Mr. Landon, what is your position on custody of Bella Landon?"Cillian stood and adjusted his glasses. "Your Honor, after careful consideration, my client has decided—"He paused, his gaze sliding to Madison. She instantly tensed. Then he dropped the bomb."—to voluntarily relinquish custody. Bella will remain in her mother's custody

The one-week deadline flew by.Obviously, Madison couldn't pull together three hundred grand that fast.On the afternoon of day seven, she showed up at my career training center. The second I walked out, I saw her leaning against a black Mercedes. She looked wrecked.Dark circles. Dead eyes. None of that sharp, ambitious shine she used to wear. When she spotted me, she crushed out her cigarette and rushed over."Lugh."Her voice was rough.I stopped and looked at her like she was nobody."Can we talk?" she asked, swallowing her pride for maybe the first time. "Just a few minutes."I didn't say no.Some things needed to be said.We went to a café nearby. She ordered an Americano—my old favorite—and sat across from me.For a long time, neither of us said anything. Then she finally spoke."Lugh, I know I've let you down a lot over the years. Especially with Stella..." Her expression tightened. "I know I was wrong."I picked up my coffee but didn't take a sip.Just stare

That night, Cillian's informant sent a live update."The targets got into a huge fight. The guy threw a designer briefcase out the window, and the woman sped off."A blurry video was attached, but the audio came through loud and clear."Madison! You lied to me! Didn't you say you were a CEO making hundreds of thousands a year? Why are you taking money from his parents too? Three hundred grand! How am I supposed to live like this?"Ryan's voice cracked with panic."Shut up! You don't know what you're talking about!" Madison snapped, sounding exhausted. "It wasn't a scam. It was a loan. An investment. If I hadn't bought you a car and rented you that luxury apartment, do you think I would've done any of it?""I don't care! I didn't get with you to pay off your debts! If you end up broke, we're done. Immediately!""Weren't you the one who said you loved me, not my money?""Yeah, I love you. But I love not stressing about money even more! What's wrong with that?"...Listening to

For the next few days, I crashed at Cillian's.My life clicked into one brutal, efficient routine.First up, I called my parents.Mom picked up fast, panic already in her voice."Lugh? What is going on? Madison said you got mad and went home to us. Why haven't you called?"Classic Madison. Sweet, innocent, totally wronged.I didn't drop the divorce bomb yet. Not like that."Mom, Madison and I are dealing with some stuff. I'm at a friend's place. I'm safe. Don't worry."Then I cut to the point. "Dad, Mom, I need a favor."Madison's borrowed money from you over the years for all kinds of reasons. Can you pull the transfer records and make a list?"Dead silence. Then Dad's voice came through, calm but pissed. "She cheated on you?"Dad knew me too well.My eyes stung."Dad—""Don't." He cut me off. "Just tell us what you need. I didn't raise my son to get treated like trash."I'll go to the bank today. Every transfer. Every cent."When I hung up, something in my chest fina

I ignored them and headed straight for the bedroom.Behind me, Madison's furious voice rang out."Have you lost your mind?! You're abandoning your own daughter?!"I shut the door and locked it behind me, cutting off the noise.A barrage of pounding rattled the door."Lugh! Open up! Explain yourself! What do you mean you're giving up Bella? Have you completely lost it?!"I took a deep breath and walked to the closet.Hidden in the back was a suitcase I'd packed a long time ago.Inside were my documents, a few keepsakes from my mom, and some spare clothes. The suitcase had been sitting there for six months.Like an emergency exit I'd always known I might need.I just never expected a cat to be the reason I finally used it.I unlocked the door and pulled it open.Madison froze. Then her eyes dropped to the suitcase.Behind her, Ryan was holding Bella.A flash of satisfaction crossed his face before it was replaced by concern."Lugh, don't do anything you'll regret," he sa
