Chapter 3

Author: Hunk Alert
Just then, a soft knock came from the front door.

"Madison? You left your phone in the car. I brought it up."

Ryan's voice.

Madison reacted as if she'd just been handed a lifeline.

She hurried over and opened the door.

Ryan stood outside holding Marshmallow.

Beside him was a sleepy little girl.

My daughter.

Bella.

"Mr. Foster..." Bella rubbed her eyes and grabbed Ryan's shirt, her voice clingy.

Ryan looked at me with an apologetic smile.

Though there was something smug underneath it.

"Sorry, Lugh. Bella wanted to wait for her mom and ended up falling asleep in the car. I didn't want her catching a cold, so I carried her up."

As he spoke, he pulled Bella against his side with practiced ease.

Like he belonged here.

Madison jumped in right away.

"See? Ryan's better with kids than you are. Bella loves spending time with him."

My eyes settled on Bella.

When she saw me, she didn't run over for a hug like she used to.

Instead, she pressed closer to Ryan.

Her eyes looked so much like Madison's, and they were full of hostility.

I thought I'd gotten used to it.

I hadn't.

It still hurt.

When had Bella started pulling away from me?

Probably around the time Ryan started showing up at our apartment more and more, always with some work-related excuse.

He never said no to snacks.

Never told her it was bath time.

Never told her to go to bed.

With Ryan, life was all treats and fun.

And me?

I was the bad guy.

The one who allowed one piece of chocolate, told her too much TV was bad for her eyes, and had her in bed by nine.

"Daddy" slowly turned into a flat "Hey."

The healthy breakfasts I made got shoved away with a frown.

"I don't want that! I want the cream cakes Mr. Foster buys me!"

When I asked her to clean up her toys, she'd snap back without blinking.

"Why should I? Mr. Foster said girls are supposed to be spoiled!"

The worst moment came when I had a fever and spent the whole day in bed.

Bella came home from school, saw me barely able to move, and didn't care at all.

She marched to my bedside and demanded, "Why aren't you making dinner yet? I'm hungry! Mommy said a man who can't even take care of the apartment is a useless loser!"

I stared at the cruelty on her face and went cold all over.

I'd spent five hard years raising her.

Another man won her over in months with treats and toys.

Now she was just another weapon he could use against me.

And Madison didn't just allow it.

She encouraged it.

"Look at you. You can't even handle one kid. Bella's happy the second Ryan shows up. You should learn from him."

"Bella's still young. Stop dumping so many rules on her. Girls deserve to be spoiled."

"So she said a few things. Do you really need to sulk over it? You're a stay-at-home dad. You can't even handle that?"

Those words were dull blades, carving into my heart day after day.

Only today did I finally see the truth.

This apartment had stopped being my home a long time ago.

Seeing the look on my face, Madison seemed to think she'd finally found a way to control me.

She stepped forward and pointed at Bella, who was still tucked against Ryan.

Her voice turned sharp. "Lugh, I'll say this one last time. If you divorce me, you're not getting custody of Bella. The court gives custody to the parent with better financial resources.

"You haven't worked in ten years. What exactly do you think you can compete with? And when you're old, don't expect Bella to take care of you."

I looked at Bella, clutching Ryan's shirt like she was afraid he'd disappear.

Then I looked at the smug smile pulling at Ryan's lips.

In that moment, the resentment and heartbreak I'd carried for ten years suddenly faded.

I smiled. "Madison, I don't even want a cheating piece of trash like you anymore.

"So why would I want the ungrateful brat you've already ruined?"

Without my constant care—and without Ryan's fake affection, which was nothing but treats and toys—Bella's spoiled attitude spun completely out of control. She threw screaming tantrums and rolled on the floor whenever Madison wouldn't buy her a toy.If she didn't like the food, she knocked the whole meal onto the floor. And late at night, she'd cry for her dad.Cillian heard about it through the grapevine and passed it on.Once, he even sent me a photo. The living room was trashed. Broken toys and food scraps covered the floor.Madison slumped on the couch, hands buried in her hair, looking wiped out.Bella stood in front of her, hands on her hips, yelling like a spoiled brat. The irony was brutal.Madison used to say I didn't know how to raise a child. That I couldn't even compare to some outsider. Now, the little monster she had created was all hers.I looked at the photo and felt nothing. No satisfaction.Just calm indifference.Everything that happened came from her o

The court date came fast. The judge looked at me. "Mr. Landon, are you still seeking a divorce from Ms. Seidel?""Yes, Your Honor."My voice carried through the silent courtroom. The judge nodded and turned to Madison. "Ms. Seidel, do you oppose the divorce?"Madison shot to her feet. "Yes, Your Honor. I do. We've been married for ten years. Our marriage can't just end like this. I know I made mistakes, but I'm willing to change. Please give us another chance."Her attorney tugged her sleeve, urging her to sit.The judge's expression didn't change. "Since Ms. Seidel opposes the divorce, we'll move on to custody and division of marital assets."Mr. Landon, what is your position on custody of Bella Landon?"Cillian stood and adjusted his glasses. "Your Honor, after careful consideration, my client has decided—"He paused, his gaze sliding to Madison. She instantly tensed. Then he dropped the bomb."—to voluntarily relinquish custody. Bella will remain in her mother's custody

The one-week deadline flew by.Obviously, Madison couldn't pull together three hundred grand that fast.On the afternoon of day seven, she showed up at my career training center. The second I walked out, I saw her leaning against a black Mercedes. She looked wrecked.Dark circles. Dead eyes. None of that sharp, ambitious shine she used to wear. When she spotted me, she crushed out her cigarette and rushed over."Lugh."Her voice was rough.I stopped and looked at her like she was nobody."Can we talk?" she asked, swallowing her pride for maybe the first time. "Just a few minutes."I didn't say no.Some things needed to be said.We went to a café nearby. She ordered an Americano—my old favorite—and sat across from me.For a long time, neither of us said anything. Then she finally spoke."Lugh, I know I've let you down a lot over the years. Especially with Stella..." Her expression tightened. "I know I was wrong."I picked up my coffee but didn't take a sip.Just stare

That night, Cillian's informant sent a live update."The targets got into a huge fight. The guy threw a designer briefcase out the window, and the woman sped off."A blurry video was attached, but the audio came through loud and clear."Madison! You lied to me! Didn't you say you were a CEO making hundreds of thousands a year? Why are you taking money from his parents too? Three hundred grand! How am I supposed to live like this?"Ryan's voice cracked with panic."Shut up! You don't know what you're talking about!" Madison snapped, sounding exhausted. "It wasn't a scam. It was a loan. An investment. If I hadn't bought you a car and rented you that luxury apartment, do you think I would've done any of it?""I don't care! I didn't get with you to pay off your debts! If you end up broke, we're done. Immediately!""Weren't you the one who said you loved me, not my money?""Yeah, I love you. But I love not stressing about money even more! What's wrong with that?"...Listening to

For the next few days, I crashed at Cillian's.My life clicked into one brutal, efficient routine.First up, I called my parents.Mom picked up fast, panic already in her voice."Lugh? What is going on? Madison said you got mad and went home to us. Why haven't you called?"Classic Madison. Sweet, innocent, totally wronged.I didn't drop the divorce bomb yet. Not like that."Mom, Madison and I are dealing with some stuff. I'm at a friend's place. I'm safe. Don't worry."Then I cut to the point. "Dad, Mom, I need a favor."Madison's borrowed money from you over the years for all kinds of reasons. Can you pull the transfer records and make a list?"Dead silence. Then Dad's voice came through, calm but pissed. "She cheated on you?"Dad knew me too well.My eyes stung."Dad—""Don't." He cut me off. "Just tell us what you need. I didn't raise my son to get treated like trash."I'll go to the bank today. Every transfer. Every cent."When I hung up, something in my chest fina

I ignored them and headed straight for the bedroom.Behind me, Madison's furious voice rang out."Have you lost your mind?! You're abandoning your own daughter?!"I shut the door and locked it behind me, cutting off the noise.A barrage of pounding rattled the door."Lugh! Open up! Explain yourself! What do you mean you're giving up Bella? Have you completely lost it?!"I took a deep breath and walked to the closet.Hidden in the back was a suitcase I'd packed a long time ago.Inside were my documents, a few keepsakes from my mom, and some spare clothes. The suitcase had been sitting there for six months.Like an emergency exit I'd always known I might need.I just never expected a cat to be the reason I finally used it.I unlocked the door and pulled it open.Madison froze. Then her eyes dropped to the suitcase.Behind her, Ryan was holding Bella.A flash of satisfaction crossed his face before it was replaced by concern."Lugh, don't do anything you'll regret," he sa
