I hadn’t told Jagger about the kiss between Keegan and I. I didn’t want to hurt her even more. She was headed to Texas A&M for softball in two weeks. I wanted to say our goodbyes and not have it be super messy.

I was taking her out to dinner for our last date together.

I had been dreading this night since the moment Jagger told me she was leaving for Texas A&M.

Not because I wasn’t happy for her.

I was.

God, I was so proud of her.

But knowing that this was our last dinner before we both left

I wanted to tell him that I was scared. That I didn’t know what life would look like without him around. That I was going to miss our stupid arguments and the way he always knew when I was upset, even when I insisted I was fine. But I didn’t.Because I wasn’t sure what we were anymore. And I was leaving.A few minutes later, Mom and Daddy climbed into the vehicles.I told them I’d be right behind them.Keegan and I stood near the mailbox, away from everyone else. The morning sun was beginning to warm the driveway, and I could hear Daddy messing with something in the truck.Keegan shoved his hands into his pockets.“So.”“So.”“You’re going to have a good time.”I smiled faintly.“I hope so.”“You’ll love it. Knoxville is beautiful, and the football games are going to be insane.”“I know. I’m excited.”He nodded.“Good.”I looked at him.“You’re going to come visit, right?”He smiled.“If you’ll have me.”“Obviously.”“Then yeah. I’ll come.”I wanted to believe that.I wanted to imagin

Chapter: The Last GoodbyeBrees’s POVI didn’t think leaving home would feel this hard.I’d spent the last several weeks talking about Tennessee like it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to me. I’d counted down the days, shopped for dorm decorations, bought more orange clothing than any person reasonably needed, and told everyone who would listen how excited I was to start my new life at the University of Tennessee. And I was excited.I really was.But excitement didn’t seem to matter much when I stood in the middle of my bedroom at six-thirty in the morning, staring at the empty spaces where my things used to be.My walls were bare. My closet was practically empty. The only things left in my room were a few pictures, my bedding, and the little things I hadn’t figured out how to pack.Three suitcases sat by the door. That was it.Eighteen years of my life, somehow reduced to three suitcases and a couple of boxes in the back of my dad’s truck.I picked up the framed picture

My throat tightened.“Keegan…”“I’m not asking you for anything tonight.”He looked down at our hands.“I just wanted one more night with you.”After dinner, we walked farther down the dock. The water was nearly black now, reflecting the little lights strung above us. Somewhere in the distance, crickets chirped, and the occasional fish disturbed the otherwise still surface.Keegan stopped near the end of the dock.“Remember when you fell in here?”I groaned.“Don’t.”“You were wearing that ridiculous pink bathing suit.”“It was not ridiculous.”“You jumped in to get your sunglasses.”“They were expensive!”“You couldn’t swim in a straight line because you were laughing so hard.”I laughed, covering my face.“You pushed me!”“Because you wouldn’t stop screaming.”“You were the worst.”He grinned.“And yet you always followed me around.”I looked at him.“Maybe I liked having someone to get into trouble with.”His smile softened.“Maybe I liked having you around.”There it was again.Th

We sat on the dock with our feet hanging over the edge, eating sandwiches and watching the sun disappear behind the trees.Keegan had brought my favorite chips, a bottle of lemonade, and the chocolate-covered strawberries I used to beg him to buy whenever we went to the grocery store.I picked one up.“You remembered.”He looked at me.“I remember everything.”I glanced down at the strawberry.I wasn’t sure what to say to that.“So,” he said, leaning back on his hands. “Tennessee.”I nodded.“Tennessee.”“Excited?”“Terrified.”He laughed.“Why?”“Because I’m moving halfway across the country, and I know approximately three people there. Also, I’ve never lived anywhere besides Kentwood.”“You’re going to love it.”“You think?”“I know.”I looked at him.“You’re not even going with me.”His smile softened.“No, I’m not.”For a moment, neither of us spoke.I picked at the label on my lemonade bottle.“Jagger and I broke up.”Keegan turned his head.“Yeah?”I nodded.“After you left.”“H

I had officially reached the point where I hated looking at my suitcases.Three of them sat at the foot of my bed, packed with practically everything I owned. My closet was nearly empty, my dresser drawers had been cleaned out, and my walls looked strangely bare without all the pictures I’d collected over the years.Tomorrow morning, I would leave Kentwood, Louisiana, and head to Knoxville, Tennessee.University of Tennessee.A new school. A new town. A new beginning. And, hopefully, a new version of myself.I was sitting cross-legged on my bed, scrolling through pictures on my phone, when someone knocked downstairs.“BREES!”I groaned.“WHAT?”“YOU HAVE A VISITOR!”He actually came! I didn’t plan to be excited. Especially after what we had done earlier in my bedroom. I pulled my hair out of its messy bun, shook out my curls, and headed downstairs. When I rounded the corner into the living room, I stopped.Keegan was standing by the front door.He wore a pair of faded jeans, a white

By the time I pulled into Jagger’s driveway, I’d rehearsed what I wanted to say at least a hundred times. None of it sounded right. She was sitting on the front porch when I got out of my Jeep, wearing an oversized T-shirt and athletic shorts. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun, and she had her phone in her hand. She smiled when she saw me, but it wasn’t the same smile she’d given me a few weeks ago. “Hey, stranger.” “Hey.” I walked up the steps, and she stood to hug me. I wrapped my arms around her, holding on for a second longer than I probably should have. “Come inside,” she said. We settled on her bedroom floor, surrounded by the usual clutter of clothes, shoes, and half-empty water bottles. It felt strangely familiar. I’d spent so much time in this room that I could probably find my way around with my eyes closed. Jagger sat cross-legged across from me. “Okay. What’s going on?” I took a breath. “I leave tomorrow.” She gave me a small smile. “I know. I’ve been hear
