Haven took a deep breath. She looked into his eyes as she settled into her seat. “You left and went into the army. I was still just a young teenager though I could have done anything at that point. You knew I went straight into medical school, and I had to stay with them. Do you remember how my parents were?” “Controlling and neglectful?” he asked back. He did remember her parents. The married couple that lived apart from each other. Her mother was a horrible woman from everything he could remember about her. When Haven was in her last year of college, he remembered bruises covering her arms and legs though she tried to hide them. He wanted to go after her mother in any way he could.

Haven looked at her boss, who was shaking his head. “That was Dr. little he was requesting that you not visit his patient for some reason.” “I don’t care what Dr. Little requested. I am asking for time off, so I am not on the clock when I go up there to check on my old friend.” Haven replied.“He is one of the best doctors in the hospital.” The man in front of her said. “And?” Haven asked. 5Haven walked upstairs not more than a half-hour later. She was walking past the nurse's station as they all looked at her, and then she was getting ready to walk in the room when the head nurse for the floor came over and stood in front of it. “You aren’t supposed to be here.”“Oh really?” Haven asked, “Why because it is hospital policy?”“The doctor requested that no other doctors to go into the rooms he has worked on.” The nurse said with a smirk.

“Mack, what are you thinking about?” Haven asked, bringing him back to the here and now. He looked over at her as she looked at him. “One of the best days I had.” He replied with a grin forming.“Oh, really?” she asked as she looked at him, “What day was that?” “Your birthday.” He said as he watched her search for her memories for the day. “Sweetheart, it is fine. You don’t have to remember it so much.”

Mack was handed his phone from the pocket of his uniform after she dug around in his bag for it with his belongings. She gave it to him, and he made the call knowing they were at best fifteen minutes away. They would respond to the call, and as soon as he got someone to talk to, he explained the situation without actually saying it. He knew they knew he had been shot.The person that he was talking to was trying to get him to stay at the hospital, but in the end, Mack won that argument, and they would be sending over a few units to help get him out if that was what he really wanted. He sighed, knowing that back up in the form of other cops was coming soon enough. That did release some of the tension he had throughout his body.

Mack threw on his shirt or what was left of it when he got the text that his back up was in the lobby. He knew he was safe, and so was she. To him, that was more important than himself. Haven had to get out of here without being touched by anyone. She had already stumbled into this mess headfirst and left her job because of it as well. He would not have anything to her because of him. Now she looked more confused because the patient information wasn’t there. He thought maybe it could be a mix up they just hadn’t corrected yet. He was rushed in there with many others. He knew better though. This was a way to erase him because he knew too much. He also knew that his arm hurt, but he couldn’t let the pain distract him.
