Chapter 2

Author: Joe Yo
I did not look at Bryce again and turned to walk toward school.

He followed behind me the whole way. Just like usual, he carried my bag for me, shielded me from passing bicycles, and even instinctively pulled me closer to him when the light turned red. His movements were so natural, as if nothing had changed.

However, I just coldly pushed him away each time.

As soon as I entered the classroom, I found that my desk had been moved to the last row next to the trash can. Lara was sitting in my original spot. She organized her books with her head down. She seemed surprised herself, as her eyes were red.

The girl next to her immediately explained, "The teacher arranged it. Lara needs to prepare for her interview after getting guaranteed university admission, so sitting in the front is more convenient for her."

I was quiet. I just bent over and picked up the books scattered on the floor, one by one. There were even faint shoe prints still visible on my math test paper.

Lara suddenly knelt to help me pick up the books. Her eyes were red as she apologized softly, "Nelly, I'm sorry. How about I give you your seat back?"

The way everyone around me looked at me instantly changed.

Just then, Bryce came in through the back door and immediately saw Lara crouching on the floor. The papers had left a small cut on her fingertip.

Bryce's expression darkened. He pulled Lara behind him and then looked at me. For the first time, his eyes showed obvious disappointment. "Nelly, do you really have to do this?"

I did not even bother to explain. Clutching my books, I went straight to the last row.

The mock exam results came out that afternoon. I ranked first in the entire grade.

Before evening self-study ended, the school forum was in an uproar. Someone had anonymously uploaded a recording. It was what I had said a few days ago in the stairwell—"She's always been good at acting, and she's addicted to stealing from others."

However, the caption was: [A top student has been bullying her stepsister for a long time because she's jealous she got guaranteed university admission.]

The post instantly went viral. The comments section was full of people calling me vicious. Some even dug up my mother's death, saying I was a loser in a homewrecker's power struggle.

I held my phone, my fingertips growing cold. Meanwhile, Lara sat there whilst tears streamed down her face. People surrounded her, offering her comfort. Bryce stood by her desk, instinctively blocking my view.

Before school ended that evening, Mr. Hayden announced a parent-teacher meeting the next day. My heart sank.

As expected, Marissa burst into tears as soon as she entered the classroom the next afternoon. "Mr. Hayden, Lara has always been timid. She comes home crying every day, saying Nelly hates her."

Lara sat at the side with her head down and her eyes red.

The surrounding parents began to whisper.

"What's the use of good grades if her character is so bad?"

"This kid will be dangerous in the future."

The most ridiculous thing was that Bryce was there too. The teacher had said that as a student representative, he needed to help handle this 'school conflict'.

He stood beside the podium. After a long silence, he finally said in a low voice, "Nelly's emotions have indeed been quite unstable lately."

His remark plunged me into despair. I immediately looked up at him. However, he avoided my gaze.

I suddenly recalled my first year of high school. Someone had falsely accused me of stealing money, and the whole class searched my bag. Bryce had kicked over a desk and shielded me behind him. He said, "Try touching her again."

Now, he was the one who was destroying me.

After the parent-teacher conference, the school revoked my eligibility for the Outstanding Student Award. Even my scholarship for underprivileged students was suspended. The reason given was—'Possible bullying tendencies.'

I sat alone in the empty classroom, tearing that scholarship application form to shreds.

When Bryce pushed open the door, he stood there for a long time, as if finally realizing things had escalated. After a while, he slowly walked toward me and placed a new competition registration form on the table.

His voice was low and hoarse. "Nelly, as long as you stop targeting Lara, I'll get your competition spot back."

I slowly pushed the competition registration form back. "Do you really think that I'm supposed to be grateful if you throw me a little compensation? Guaranteed university admission, scholarships, my reputation—you destroyed one thing and think you can just shut me up with another."

I stared at him, continuing, "But right now, you disgust me the most."

The year I graduated from university, I received an invitation from a top laboratory abroad.Ms. Rorey had personally recommended me to get into research. After the celebration banquet for the experiment ended, I walked out holding the documents alone. I saw Jude on the ground floor. He was my senior, whom I had met in my sophomore year. He was also the boy who used to stay after school with me at Nateburg High School, working through competition problems together.Over the years, he had quietly stayed by my side, never asking about my past and never forcing me to respond to his feelings. He was different from Bryce. Bryce's love was too intense and suffocating, while Jude was like a long and quiet spring rain. When I realized it, he had gradually filled my life bit by bit.One night, Jude stood under the streetlight, smiling at me. "Dr. Seagel, would you consider bringing your family abroad with you?"I froze for two seconds, and then I took his hand for the first time. "Sure

Meanwhile, Lara had completely lost his mind. She began to cut her wrists. Later, she even swallowed sleeping pills, only to be hospitalized at midnight. When Bryce first received the call from the hospital, he rushed there overnight. As soon as he arrived at the ward, Lara cried and threw herself into his arms. "Bryce, you're all I have now."He pushed her away, his eyes filled with exhaustion and irritability. "Lara, when exactly are you going to stop pretending?"Her tears fell even harder. "But you weren't like this before! You used to care about me more than anyone!"Bryce closed his eyes. Suddenly, my face flashed through his mind.I once had a high fever and still gritted my teeth to work part-time. I lived alone in the basement, my hands even turning purple from the cold, yet I never bowed to anyone. It turned out you would not show others your pain when it was real. With this in mind, Bryce suddenly found all of it absurd. He turned around and left.In the ward, Lara f

Lara lost her mind. She started sending Bryce dozens of messages every day. She cried and explained that she was just too afraid of losing. However, Bryce never replied.Later, she could not hold it in any longer and went straight to Nateburg. The evening class had just ended that day. As soon as I walked out of the teaching building, I saw Lara standing in the rain. She was emaciated. When she saw me, she suddenly rushed toward me. "Nelly! Are you satisfied now? Bryce doesn't want me anymore, and my mom thinks I'm a burden too!"All the students around stopped in their tracks.I just looked at her coldly. "Didn't you choose this outcome yourself?"Lara seemed triggered as her tears instantly fell. "But everyone has preferred you more since we were little! You have better grades than me, you look better than me, and even Bryce ended up loving you! I just wanted to win once!"She completely lost control of her emotions. She even raised her hand to hit me.Bryce rushed over and

That night, Bryce did not return to the hotel. He sat alone on the street until early morning. All he could think about was the unfamiliar cold gaze I had given him earlier.Just then, Ian suddenly called. "Mr. Joller, we've found something."Bryce closed his eyes. "Speak."There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone."Ms. Seagel's registration information for the SATs was tampered with. As for the secretly filmed video that was posted on the forum, the edited audio recording, and the reports of bullying on campus… The IP addresses of all those accounts were traced back to Ms. Lane."Bryce abruptly opened his eyes. His voice became terrifyingly cold. "Repeat it."Ian forced himself to continue, "About Ms. Seagel being expelled from the school… Ms. Lane talked to the school administrators. She submitted a fake psychological evaluation report, claiming that Ms. Seagel had a serious tendency toward aggression."Bryce's mind short-circuited and went blank. Suddenly

Bryce frantically searched for me for half a month, but no one knew where I had gone.During that time, Bryce could not sleep at all. He began to repeatedly look through the things I had left behind. For the first time, he realized that I had already pushed myself to the limit.Lara remained by his side, pretending to be innocent. She texted Bryce every day.Lara: [Is Nelly still angry?]Lara: [She loves you so much. She won't really leave.]Lara: [Bryce, don't worry too much.]However, Bryce became more and more agitated. One night, Lara went to find him with a workbook. Like usual, she cautiously sat next to him. "Bryce, Nelly is just being sulky. She'll come back sooner or later—""Enough," Bryce coldly interrupted her for the first time.Lara was stunned for a moment. He raised his head, his eyes full of uncontrollable exhaustion and washed with a crimson hue. The next day, Bryce received a secretly filmed video. In the video, I was standing at a hotel entrance. A middle-aged man handed me a thick stack of cash while I lowered my head and accepted the money. The shooting angle of the video was ambiguous, looking very much like some kind of shady transaction.Lara sat opposite Bryce, her eyes red. "Bryce, I didn't want to tell you this, but Nelly has been really strange lately. Did she do something bad for money?"Bryce did not believe it at first. However, when he saw that I actually put the money into my bag toward the end of the video, his expression gradually darkened a little. That night, he frantically went to the hotel where I was working part-time.I had just come out after tutoring my students when Bryce grabbed me and pulled me into the stairwell. His eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse. "Nelly, are you that desperate for money now?"I frowned and broke free. "What are you going crazy over this time?"However, Bryce threw
