Chapter 3

Author: Joe Yo
Bryce seemed unprepared for my harsh words. He gritted his teeth and spoke with determination and resentment. "Alright, I'll see how much backbone you have!"

Three days after the scholarship was revoked, Mr. Hayden pushed a competition registration form in front of me and said with a somewhat troubled tone, "Nelly, the registration fee for this provincial competition is 2,800 dollars. You need to pay it as soon as possible."

I looked down at the paper, my throat tightening.

In the past, I could make up for it with my scholarship, even if my family did not give me the money. Now, I could not even afford a single cent.

When I got home that evening, Marissa was sitting on the couch, munching on peanuts. The TV was showing Lara's guaranteed university admission interview. "Lara is amazing! She will definitely have a bright future."

Seeing me return, Marissa's expression sank. "You've ruined your reputation so badly. Without the school scholarship, why bother studying? If you start working sooner, you can help ease the burden on the family."

As soon as she finished speaking, Lara came out of the room. She gently bit her lip. "Nelly, you don't have to work so hard. Bryce said that he'll take care of you even if you don't get into university."

For the first time, I realized that people could be so shamelessly malicious.

I sneered, "So you're feeling smug now?"

Lara's eyes instantly reddened.

I said nothing more and turned to go back to my room. However, I froze as soon as I opened the door. The room was a mess. The closets were wide open, and all of my mother's belongings, which were in the cardboard box under the bed, were gone.

My face turned pale instantly as I rushed out. "Where are my mother's things?"

Marissa slowly replied, "Oh, that pile of junk? People came to interview Lara today, and it would've been embarrassing to have that pile of junk filmed, so we threw it away."

I frantically rushed out and searched through the trash cans, but I found nothing. That night, I dragged my suitcase and left home. Starting the next day, I went to class during the day and worked part-time at night. I distributed flyers, washed dishes, and worked the night shift at a convenience store.

Finally, I rented a basement room on a street behind my school. I piled my textbooks next to my bed and slept only four hours a day, spending the rest of my time grinding through practice questions.

Two weeks later, Bryce waited for me outside the convenience store where I worked part-time. This was the first time I saw him after our argument. I heard he had gone abroad to clear his head.

He had lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, his pupils contracted sharply. He probably had not expected me to be wearing a cheap work uniform with my hands covered in chilblains.

His voice was hoarse. "Nelly."

I tried to walk past him, but Bryce grabbed my wrist. The next second, his expression changed drastically because my hands were terrifyingly cold. He stared at me. "Where do you live now?"

I did not answer, and Bryce's eyes reddened slightly. "Why won't you go home?"

I finally looked up at him. "Is that my home?"

Bryce's breath hitched. After a long pause, he answered in a low voice, "I've already paid your competition registration fee. Don't live in the basement anymore. I'll rent you a new place."

While shoving a bank card into my hand, he said, "There's 100,000 dollars in there, Nelly. Don't be so hard on yourself."

I looked down at the card and suddenly found it ridiculous. I threw the bank card back at him. "Bryce, do you think that I'll still follow you around like before as long as you spend some money on me?"

His face turned pale instantly. "That's not what I meant."

"Then what did you mean?" I looked at him and spoke each word clearly. "You stole my guaranteed university admission spot, snatched my scholarship, and now, you want to decide how I live? What gives you the right?"

Bryce's Adam's apple bobbed violently, but he could not utter a single word.

The year I graduated from university, I received an invitation from a top laboratory abroad.Ms. Rorey had personally recommended me to get into research. After the celebration banquet for the experiment ended, I walked out holding the documents alone. I saw Jude on the ground floor. He was my senior, whom I had met in my sophomore year. He was also the boy who used to stay after school with me at Nateburg High School, working through competition problems together.Over the years, he had quietly stayed by my side, never asking about my past and never forcing me to respond to his feelings. He was different from Bryce. Bryce's love was too intense and suffocating, while Jude was like a long and quiet spring rain. When I realized it, he had gradually filled my life bit by bit.One night, Jude stood under the streetlight, smiling at me. "Dr. Seagel, would you consider bringing your family abroad with you?"I froze for two seconds, and then I took his hand for the first time. "Sure

Meanwhile, Lara had completely lost his mind. She began to cut her wrists. Later, she even swallowed sleeping pills, only to be hospitalized at midnight. When Bryce first received the call from the hospital, he rushed there overnight. As soon as he arrived at the ward, Lara cried and threw herself into his arms. "Bryce, you're all I have now."He pushed her away, his eyes filled with exhaustion and irritability. "Lara, when exactly are you going to stop pretending?"Her tears fell even harder. "But you weren't like this before! You used to care about me more than anyone!"Bryce closed his eyes. Suddenly, my face flashed through his mind.I once had a high fever and still gritted my teeth to work part-time. I lived alone in the basement, my hands even turning purple from the cold, yet I never bowed to anyone. It turned out you would not show others your pain when it was real. With this in mind, Bryce suddenly found all of it absurd. He turned around and left.In the ward, Lara f

Lara lost her mind. She started sending Bryce dozens of messages every day. She cried and explained that she was just too afraid of losing. However, Bryce never replied.Later, she could not hold it in any longer and went straight to Nateburg. The evening class had just ended that day. As soon as I walked out of the teaching building, I saw Lara standing in the rain. She was emaciated. When she saw me, she suddenly rushed toward me. "Nelly! Are you satisfied now? Bryce doesn't want me anymore, and my mom thinks I'm a burden too!"All the students around stopped in their tracks.I just looked at her coldly. "Didn't you choose this outcome yourself?"Lara seemed triggered as her tears instantly fell. "But everyone has preferred you more since we were little! You have better grades than me, you look better than me, and even Bryce ended up loving you! I just wanted to win once!"She completely lost control of her emotions. She even raised her hand to hit me.Bryce rushed over and

That night, Bryce did not return to the hotel. He sat alone on the street until early morning. All he could think about was the unfamiliar cold gaze I had given him earlier.Just then, Ian suddenly called. "Mr. Joller, we've found something."Bryce closed his eyes. "Speak."There was a two-second silence on the other end of the phone."Ms. Seagel's registration information for the SATs was tampered with. As for the secretly filmed video that was posted on the forum, the edited audio recording, and the reports of bullying on campus… The IP addresses of all those accounts were traced back to Ms. Lane."Bryce abruptly opened his eyes. His voice became terrifyingly cold. "Repeat it."Ian forced himself to continue, "About Ms. Seagel being expelled from the school… Ms. Lane talked to the school administrators. She submitted a fake psychological evaluation report, claiming that Ms. Seagel had a serious tendency toward aggression."Bryce's mind short-circuited and went blank. Suddenly

Bryce frantically searched for me for half a month, but no one knew where I had gone.During that time, Bryce could not sleep at all. He began to repeatedly look through the things I had left behind. For the first time, he realized that I had already pushed myself to the limit.Lara remained by his side, pretending to be innocent. The next day, Bryce received a secretly filmed video. In the video, I was standing at a hotel entrance. A middle-aged man handed me a thick stack of cash while I lowered my head and accepted the money. The shooting angle of the video was ambiguous, looking very much like some kind of shady transaction.Lara sat opposite Bryce, her eyes red. "Bryce, I didn't want to tell you this, but Nelly has been really strange lately. Did she do something bad for money?"Bryce did not believe it at first. However, when he saw that I actually put the money into my bag toward the end of the video, his expression gradually darkened a little. That night, he frantically went to the hotel where I was working part-time.I had just come out after tutoring my students when Bryce grabbed me and pulled me into the stairwell. His eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse. "Nelly, are you that desperate for money now?"I frowned and broke free. "What are you going crazy over this time?"However, Bryce threw
