MIKE MILLER

“Mr Miller!” I snapped out of it instinctively looking up, I met my assistant’s worried gaze. “What are you yelling about? I am not deaf you know.” My assistant was getting bold, how could he yell at me like that. well, he was Jackson, of course he was bold.

“Mr Miller, you have been like this since Mrs Vance came here four days ago.” I frowned. “Like what?” He sighed; the moron boldly pulled a chair and sat down. “You have been spacing out; I would call you three or four times before you answer.”

He was right, I have been distracted. “Derick is a jerk!” I said trying to tell him what was eating me up without going into details. He nodded eagerly crossing his legs like a village gossip. “He is! The man would be walking around arrogantly like the world owes him something. So, rude!” Where did I get Jacson again? I wondered. But the smile on my face couldn’t be denied.

He understood me better than anyone. “His wife made him look good.” Opposites really do attract. Kora was strict when it comes to business but also kind and fair. “I know right, I don’t even know why she stopped working. When she was around, we got a new client every week, with her gone. That horrible man started giving more of our clients to that damned start up. Now they are growing fast and arrogant thinking they are in our level.”

I leaned back, Derick always hated how well his wife and I worked together. Kora was one of the few people I could trust to challenge my ideas without trying to undermine me. She would always point out why I lost after each competition. Not in a demeaning manner but educational. I appreciated that about her.

Apparently, that was enough to make Derick suspicious of us. He confronted me once accusing me of having an affair with her. I found it deeply offensive and disrespectful to the wife who was loyal only to him. Then a couple of months later, she announced that she is taking a leave of absence for a while from work to focus on family. Even then, she didn’t stop doing charity work.

That was until over a year ago, she just stopped and disappeared from the world. Derick started appearing in her stead and always with a woman by his side. “They are not our clients, and he is not obligated to recommend us to them.” Jackson scoffed. “I hate how everyone in the industry is so afraid of him. How they just bow their heads and follow his lead like his a God or something.”

A sigh left me, Kora’s place was showing, many were asking about her. I wondered about her whereabouts well. I saw how badly she looked when she came, she kept that confident look in her eyes, but I could tell. She was no longer the woman she used to be. Then she showed me the divorce papers and I finally understood.

“Because his wife gave him that respect both behind closed doors and in the boardroom. Derick is not as capable as people think.” I stood and went to stand in front of the floor to ceiling window looking out. “Why do you think they divorced and who do you think initiated it.” I found myself getting angry at the question.

“You saw Derick at the charity gala.” He slapped his thigh standing up and rushed to stand next to me. “I did!” I covered his mouth with his hand dramatically. I watched him and couldn’t help but wonder why he insisted he wasn’t gay when everything pointed to that direction, but he insists he was just a feminine male. Whatever that meant.

“Did you see the woman he was with?” I gave a nod. “I think she is the reason they divorced, she was so fake with the soft voice, walking around like wind could blow her away.” He tilted his head wanting to look at my face. “Let me tell you, people like that are the most vicious and manipulative. Derick got played, he doesn’t even know it.”

He looked thoughtful then his face changed and a sad look quickly replaced the cheerful smiling one. “I feel bad for Mrs Vance though, she is a good person.” He looked at me. “You saw how she looked when she was here.” he sighed shoving his hands into his packets mimicking me.

“Under normal circumstances, she would have never set foot here. but she did and offered to work with us to take Derick down.” She must have suffered a lot for her to resort to that. “Are you sure there is nothing we can do to help? She helped us a lot over the years.” I looked at him with a serious expression.

“We can’t openly help her.” his face fell. “Why? We are where we are today because of her. do you remember how we struggled when we were still starting out. Back then you were using your own savings to pay the rent for our old office, and you owed me two months salary. If she didn’t recommend those clients to us, we wouldn’t be here.”

I knew exactly what Kora had done for me. I wished I could openly stand by her side and help her deal with that arrogant jerk! “I didn’t say we couldn’t help.” He frowned, “But you just said…” he stopped talking a smile spread across his face. “You said we can’t openly help her. so that means you have a plan. Right?

I walked back to my desk with him following behind. “Is your cousin still the editor of The Voice News?” He nodded. “Contact him.” he frowned. “Who?” I smiled. “The Voice News.” A bright smile broke on his face. “Yes, yes! and he is very principled. A man of integrity and will never real where he got his information from.” I tapped my fingers on the desk.

“Contact him, we are leaking Derick’s divorce.” His eyes widened. “Boss, are you sure?” his eyes were filled with excitement. He hated Derick as much as I did. “Yes, but we are doing it in parts. First the divorce, then how he left his wife with nothing. then the rest. Bit by bit we will show the world who Derick Vance really is.”

He jumped up and rushed to the door. “I am going to contact him now.” he opened the door and was about to rush out when I called to him. “Use a secure line and make sure nothing gets back to us.” He rolled his eyes. “Duh, I am not new to this.” He closed the door behind him. it was time someone showed Derick he was not untouchable.

Did Derick really think he could destroy the woman who helped build my company and walk away untouched? Not a chance. Derick, do you think your IPO will pass after Kora takes back her chips? A smile spread across my face. Time to watch the show.

NICOLUSKora had been gone for exactly eleven minutes when I finally allowed myself to breathe. Half an hour of smiling, discussing business plans and pretending that the only thing on my mind was helping her get back on her feet. She had enough to worry about without seeing the extent of what I wanted to do to Derick.“Boss, you don’t look good. Did Ms Vance say something that upset you?” Something that upset me, what could she possibly say that could upset me more than what my dear brother had already done. “It’s time to stop playing the cat and mouse game with Derick.” My assistant’s eyes widened. “Sir…” I shot him a look, and he swallowed whatever he wanted to say.I had watched that man destroy her confidence, strip her of the life she had built and then stand before the world pretending he was the victim. When that wasn’t enough, he sent his mistress to finish what he started, and I had to sit there. Listening to Kora defend herself while every instinct in me screamed to make De

NICOLUS We woke up to news of Kora using the kids to gain sympathy. The story was all over the internet. I frowned and I kept reading the news. I could tell it was made up with just one glance. I had been keeping an eye on Kora, and I knew exactly when things started going south with Derick. I watched from the shadows how he treated her.I hated every second of it, but I couldn’t do anything. Kora had to be the one to leave on her own. I waited for that day to come and when it finally did. I was out of the country and only found out a month later. I so angry at myself for not checking, for only finding out that she had finally left when she was being forced to take the blame for the divorce. Now Derick got the demand to stop using the patent and the first thing he did was to allow his mistress to smear her name on the internet. While I was deep in thought, the doorbell rang. My assistant we to open the door. A moment later Kora walked in with a tablet in hand. I searched her face; th

DERICK A week had passed and no sign of Kora. Since the day of the press conference, she disappeared. Never went back to her dumb job at the convenient store or to that small apartment of hers. I had not yet found where she went or who that man she left with that day was. The news of our divorce, how I left her with nothing and my cheating had been all over the news.My PR team had been working hard trying to supress the news but failed. Instead, the reporters dug up old pictures of Vera and me with our daughter. There was something new about us everyday on the news. Someone even had a picture of Kora at the convenient store and the kids wearing worn out clothes. The media had been tearing me and Vera apart and Kora thought it was a good time to disappear on me without clarifying anything. “Derick, what are we going to do? The board is unhappy and the stock had dropped. At this rate, we might not even be able to take this company public as planned. This is affecting the IPO.”“What d

  • Our House of Cards: He Thought He Left Me with Nothing   CHAPTER 17– THE SMILE THAT STOLE MY HEART

NICOLUS For once, I had no immediate answer. I could have told her that I saw a woman who had been betrayed by the same kind of man who had destroyed my mother. But that wouldn’t have explained why I helped her as well all those years ago. It wouldn’t explain watching her from the shadows. It wouldn’t explain why I was happy when she and Derick divorced.I could have told her that she deserved better, that helping her had felt like the right thing to do. All of that would have been true. But it wouldn’t have been the whole truth. Because when I first learned what Derick had done to her, I had not only felt sympathy. I had seen an opportunity. An opportunity to make him feel the kind of helplessness I had lived with for years and I had taken it.The problem was that somewhere along the way. Kora had stopped being part of my plan and had become someone I genuinely wanted to protect. It wasn’t the first time; I realized that she wasn’t simply someone I pitied both back then and now. I f

  • Our House of Cards: He Thought He Left Me with Nothing   CHAPTER 16– THE OTHER BETRAYAL

NICOLUS For a moment I wondered whether I should tell her the truth. Kora stood in front of me, clutching the folder against her chest. She was trying to appear calm, but I could see the questions in her eyes. She had heard enough to realize that my relationship with Derick was far more complicated than I led her to believe. I knew this day would come eventually but I had not expected her to learn of the truth by listening at my door.I glanced at my assistant. “Would you give us a moment?” He looked at Kora then at me. whatever he saw in my expression made reconsider what he intended to say. “Of course, sir.” He stood and walked out closing the door behind him. Kora didn’t sit down, neither did I. “You said Derick betrayed someone.” She reminded me. “Who?”I studied her face. There was time I would have avoided the conversation altogether. I had spent years keeping my past buried, convinced if I spoke about it, it would eventually lose its power over me. it hadn’t. some betrayals di

KORA I stood by the door and listened to the sad story of a man who always wore a smile on his face as if nothing bothered him. like nothing could ever disturb his peace. Listening to him talk about the past and the sadness in his voice made me feel sorry for him. I watched through the crack on the door as he slipped his hands into his pockets.“I was the one who arranged the scholarships that allowed Derick and Kora to finish college. When they started their business, I was the first to invest. I sent more opportunities their way. I opened doors for them I had once struggled to open for myself.” My eyes widened and I covered my mouth with my hand shaking uncontrollably. He had always been there in my life, and I had not even known it. I thought he was just helping on impulse. I had no idea he had watched us grow into the people we were. By the sound of it, he had not done it on a whim, he had done it because he knew what it meant to be poor. He knew what it felt like to stand in fro
