The fire in the marble hearth crackled softly, spitting the occasional spark. Beneath me, the hand-woven wool rug was rough against my bare shoulders, and above me, his body was a solid, burning line against mine. We were tangled together, breath traded back and forth until I couldn't tell whose was whose. My fingers plucked blindly at the collar of my dress. "Mm... it's so hot." It was a suffocating heat, the kind that crawled under my skin and stole the air from my lungs. I was panting, my skin slick with sweat, my body swaying helplessly in the firelight. "Stop squirming." A man’s voice was cold and clipped, but his eyes weren't. They moved over my face, studying every inch of it, and the darkness in them deepened. "But I'm burning up," I whispered. My eyes stung, and I pouted at him without meaning to. "It really is you." His gaze stayed clear, but his voice had dropped, roughened by the effort of holding himself in check. His calloused fingertips traced my cheek, my brow, my jaw, as if confirming it. "Evelyn Hart." Then he kissed me, and every touch of his mouth was a spark on dry kindling, lighting me up until I shivered. His rough thumb brushed my skin, and I melted. I strained to bring his face into focus, half answering, half confused. "Hm?" He was breathing hard, his jaw clenched. "Don't move. I don't want to hurt you." My body went taut. Instinct took over, and I looped my arms around his neck and pulled myself toward the cool of him. My lips grazed his. "You're cold," I breathed. "That feels so good." I sounded like a child, innocent and half-lost, but I knew the look on my face was anything but. Something in that contradiction undid him. "Evelyn." His forehead pressed to mine. "Tell me to stop, and I will." "Don't," I whispered. "Please." The next kiss crashed over me. It was possessive, tender, and aching all at once, so many feelings poured into it that I came apart under it, a small sound escaping me. "Ah..." "You walked right into this," he murmured against my lips, his thumb tracing the curve of my mouth. His eyes had gone deep and black, a pull I couldn't have escaped if I'd tried. "Don't blame me if I can't let you go now." I squirmed, restless and unsure, and my voice came out thin and trembling. "It hurts... I feel so strange." I felt the shudder go through him, the tight swallow in his throat as his control wavered and finally slipped. Then he stopped. Everything in him went still. A sharp pain went through me, and the flush drained from my face. I pushed against his chest and curled in on myself. When I dared look up, Sebastian's eyes were wide with shock. Then, slowly, shock gave way to something I could hardly believe, a wild, trembling joy. His hands shook as he cupped my face, and he kissed me again and again, gently, kissing the tears from the corners of my eyes and the hurt from my expression. He pulled me against his chest and held me there, so close I could feel his heart pounding. "Evie," he whispered. "My Evie." Every syllable was soaked in tenderness. "Easy now. It'll only hurt for a moment." His voice was so soft it could have melted me all over again.Evelyn's Point of View "You invited me to come along, and now you're backing out?" Sebastian's smile was warm, his eyes locked on me. "Tell you what. Say something sweet and I'll think about it.""Sebastian," I said.He only smiled and said nothing.I was at my wit's end. "Seb.""Again." His answer was a single word.I blinked at him and gave up some ground. "Forget it. I won't go."That was what I said, but my pouting lips told a different story, one of indignation I didn't dare voice. I must have looked like a wronged little sulk."So delicate." He set me down, muttered something under his breath, and turned to leave.I reached to lock the door, and his voice drifted in from the other side, edged with warning. "This is my house."Meaning he had a key, and if I wanted to lock him out, I'd better think about whether my small frame could handle what came next."I'm not locking it! I'm just closing it." I made my voice as meek as I could. What else could I do against a man I couldn't o
Evelyn's Point of View My genuine feelings for Julian were like a slap across Sebastian’s face. Combined with his malicious suspicions, they shattered what little remaining reason he had.He pressed me against the wall, his tall, powerful frame pinning me in place. My desperate struggles looked like a joke in front of him.Sebastian seized both of my wrists and shoved them upward, subduing me with effortless strength. Then his thin lips, burning with fury, crashed down onto mine in a punishing, forceful kiss.“No…” The syllable I had just cried out was sealed by his overbearing mouth. His kiss was domineering and absolute, giving me no chance to breathe, as if he meant to devour me whole. My eyes flew wide in terror. I shoved hard at his chest and twisted my head desperately to the side, trying to escape. I did not want to make the same mistake again. His kiss was far too aggressive and overbearing. The ruthless plunder left me nowhere to retreat; I could only endure it passively.“M
Evelyn's Point of View I let out a breath, and the color slowly came back into my face. "Could you get me something to wear?"Sebastian nodded toward a paper bag that had come in with the breakfast. "Want me to dress you?" He hooked a finger under my chin and tilted my face up, his gaze burning into mine."No." His eyes narrowed, and I rushed to fix it. "Have you eaten yet? Go ahead and eat. I'll change on my own.""Is my Evie worried about me?" He smiled, then pressed his mouth to mine in a long, deep kiss before releasing me.I nodded hard. My heart was in my throat, and it was pure fear."Husband and wife, and still so shy." He drew his hand back. "Fine, have it your way. Get dressed like a good girl. I'll be waiting downstairs."My grip tightened on the paper bag.My eyes fell to the bed. The white sheets still bore the marks of the night, a reminder that I was no longer untouched. But there was no blood. Wait. No blood? His accusation echoed in my head: Evelyn, you slept with m
Evelyn's Point of View A moment later came the sound of silk tearing."Ah!"For a full three seconds I couldn't move. Then I screamed."You're insane! I don't know you!" My eyes flew wide, and something in my head pulled tight as a wire."Evie, you never used to talk to me like that." Sebastian lowered his head, and I felt his breath against my skin, heavier now. "Be good. Call me Seb.""No." I was close to breaking."I said, call me Seb." He pressed the point, fixed on that single name in a way that chilled me.I had no other move left. "Seb," I choked out. "It's a mistake, I swear. Please let me go. Or find Julian, he can explain everything.""Good girl." He pressed a kiss over my racing heart, and his voice turned cold and dangerous. "Julian. I will find him, just not tonight."Something in that registered. "You know Julian?""Tonight is our wedding night, Evie. I won't waste it on people who don't matter." His arm circled my waist, and his mouth traveled slowly along my collarbon
