Chapter 1

Ryan's POV

I, Ryan Crawford, had been with Amara Larkspur for seven years, and she'd never once brought up marriage. I assumed she was just shy.

In our seventh year, I spent three months secretly preparing a proposal and setting up the proposal venue.

A week before I was supposed to propose, Amara went to a get-together with some friends and invited me along. Busy discussing the proposal details with my friend, I arrived a little over ten minutes late.

Before I even pushed open the door to the private room, I overheard Amara talking with her friends. She sounded like she'd been drinking, and her voice was a little husky.

"Ryan? I got sick of him ages ago. Waking up to the same face every day? And it's been seven years—more than enough for anyone to get bored."

Her friend laughed. "Then, why did you keep him around for seven years?"

Amara replied nonchalantly, "Just for fun. And honestly, having a devoted lapdog following me around feels pretty good. But I'm sick of him now. I want to find someone new. Someone hot. You all know I go for looks. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to kiss anyone too ugly."

The whole room erupted in laughter.

"Ryan's pretty handsome, though," someone chimed in. "Every time he wears a suit, he's a total heartthrob!"

Amara chuckled lightly. "Then, you can have him."

She said it so airily, as if she were talking about something utterly unimportant.

And just like that, my heart shattered. I didn't go into the room. Instead, I turned around and left.

Then, I sent Amara a message on WhatsApp. "Busy with work today. Can't get away."

That was the day the idea of breaking up first entered my mind.

Later, word suddenly spread in our circle that Amara was pursuing a college freshman named Callum Voss. The guy was a sports major—great physique and good looks. Most importantly, he was young.

Amara was always especially generous when she pursued someone—just like when she'd pursued me back then.

She bought Callum a sports car and drowned him with luxury brands. Callum fell for her almost immediately. After all, who would turn down the chance to coast through life for the next 20 years?

Someone even took photos of Amara and Callum out on dates. She took him to amusement parks, fancy restaurants, and high-end hotels.

She was very brazen about it, not even a little worried that I might find out. She even brought him to a friend's birthday party, where a lot of my good friends were in attendance as well.

When they saw Amara arrive with another man, they all turned to look at me, concern written all over their faces.

I watched as she hooked her arm with the baby-faced man and sat down on the couch, but my face showed no reaction at all. However, my grip on the glass tightened, as if I wanted to crush it.

Amara smiled at me. "Ryan, I've been meaning to clear things up with you for a long while now. I haven't felt anything for you in a long time. It's been seven years. It's gotten boring."

The room fell silent.

Her voice softened as she continued, "I really like Callum, and I genuinely want to start a family with him."

I understood her perfectly. She wanted to break up.

I scoffed inwardly. Our seven years together had meant nothing to her. I must've been blind.

Trying hard to keep my emotions under control, I said, "Alright. I got it."

"Consider this an amicable breakup. We can still be friends, grab meals together, and hang out," she added.

I looked at the face that used to feel so familiar, and the only thing I felt was disgust. How could she say something like that?

"Since we're breaking up, let's make it a clean break. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair to your new boyfriend," I said, deliberately emphasizing the words "new boyfriend".

A flicker of surprise crossed Amara's eyes, but she still replied, "Fine!"

I stood up abruptly. "I'm leaving. You guys have fun."

After closing the door, I stood there for a moment.

I heard someone inside say, "Well, how long do you guys think Ryan can hold out this time before he comes crawling back to Amy?"

"Two days max. What backbone could that simp Ryan possibly have?"

Ryan's POVThe day Delilah and I got married, Amara showed up.She wasn't wearing any makeup. Dark circles sat under her eyes, and she looked utterly exhausted. This time, she didn't make a scene and stayed very quiet. After handing over a gift, she left.A friend muttered, "Amara really brought this on herself. Ryan used to love her so much.""I know, right? She totally deserved it."I acted as if I hadn't seen her at all and continued exchanging heartfelt vows with Delilah.Delilah was so moved that tears filled her eyes. "Ry, don't worry. I'll be devoted to you for the rest of my life. I love you."I had heard those same words from Amara before, but for some unexplainable reason, I truly believed Delilah. I believed that she would truly spend the rest of her days with me."I love you, too."Wrapping our arms around each other, we kissed.I'd never imagined that I could meet such an incredible woman in this lifetime. That night, Delilah started unwrapping our gifts. When

As soon as we stepped out of the airport, I saw Amara standing a short distance away. She was wearing a black coat, and her hair was still in those big, wavy curls. The corners of her eyes were red.It had been over half a year since we broke up, and this was the first time we'd seen each other since then.I instinctively pulled Delilah behind me protectively.Amara walked over. Third-person POV"How dare he? He's deliberately trying to piss me off, huh?" Amara seethed to herself.Fine. In that case, she wasn't going to give him a way out either. She called the park staff and canceled the proposal setup. After hanging up, the staff member grumbled offhandedly, "What a bunch of nutjobs."…After that day, Amara drank every single day and hooked up with different men, trying to forget Ryan. But even after so much time, he still lingered in her mind. She just couldn't forget him.Suddenly, a thought came to her. If she hadn't treated Ryan the way she had all these years, would he have never left? Would he never have ended up with Delilah? The thought made her feel very conflicted. She didn't know who was wrong—she or Ryan. After much deliberation, she finally unblocked Ryan and called him, only to be met with the mechanical voice of an automated message.Refusing to believe it, she called again and again. Third-person POVThe staff member continued, "Back then, we all thought that whoever the woman he was proposing to was, she sure was one lucky lady."But later, he had someone tear the whole setup down. But he still hadn't come back.Every day, her heart felt hollow, and

Ryan's POVThat kind of love was rare.I suddenly remembered what Leo had said—I couldn't stay single for the rest of my life as punishment over Amara. He was right. Amara had already hurt me. I couldn't let her continue to steal more of my future. I had the right to start a new relationship.I stared at Delilah, and a bold idea suddenly stirred inside me. But inside, I was still scared. So, I found an excuse to step away, saying I needed to use the restroom. Then, I called Leo."Do you really think Delilah's right for me?"Leo immediately got excited when he heard my question. "Of course she is! You have no idea how long she's had feelings for you."She's liked you since high school, but then you got together with Amara, so she buried those feelings deep inside."Ryan, not everyone is like Amara."Yeah, Delilah wasn't Amara. Now, it all made sense. No wonder Delilah kept wanting to be around me. I knew she liked me, but I hadn't realized she had liked me for so many years.

  • Our Vows Scattered With the Wind   Chapter 7

Ryan's POV"Delilah, give me a little more time. Let me think this through properly," I said.Delilah moved to another seat. She told me she'd wait for my answer and that, in the meantime, she'd still treat me the same way she always had.I looked at her sitting in the front row, wearing earphones. My whole body slumped in the chair, my chest tight and heavy.Even though I'd resolutely given up on Amara, the deepest part of my heart still couldn't open up to anyone else.I was scared. I was scared of going from a heart full of joy straight back to heartbreak again.…Third-person POVDelilah sat quietly, eyes closed, listening to music. This was her way of relaxing whenever she felt upset. Her heart ached. She was afraid that Ryan's final answer would still be the same—that he couldn't be with her. She'd already waited for him for many, many years.Back in high school, she and Ryan hadn't been from the same world. His results weren't great, he skipped class every day, and he
