The Grind

By Friday morning, Ryder felt like he’d lived through an entire season in the span of a few days. Every muscle in his body ached, his shoulders screamed when he stretched, and his eyes burned from too many late nights and early alarms.

But it was Friday.

He kept telling himself that. One more day. Just one more day, and then he could sleep through the weekend and pretend he wasn’t falling apart.

His alarm screamed like it hated him personally. Ryder smacked the phone off the nightstand, silenci

Jamie woke up late, by his standards. He and Ava didn’t have class until later, one of those rare shared late-start mornings that usually felt like a gift. But the jolt of it hit him hard: no sunlit calm, no lazy stretch, just the awareness that time had moved on without him.His phone was vibrating itself off the bedside table. He groaned, fumbled for it, and squinted at the screen.Ava: JAMIEAva: i need details!! Jamie rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling. He’d stayed up far too late.Long after he’d uploaded the footage. Long after he’d told himself, firmly, that he was done for the night. There was one clip he hadn’t been able to stop replaying.Max leaning back in the chair, all easy confidence, the fabric of his shirt pulling slightly across his shoulders when he moved. He smiled as he talked, slow and unguarded, hands gesturing as if he couldn’t help explaining things with his whole body. His eyes stayed warm and intent on the camera, bright with focus, he was devas

“Got time for one more?”Jamie hesitated.“Uh—yeah,” he said, far too quickly. Then, panicking, he added, “I just—bathroom. One second.”Max laughed softly. “Sure. Take your time.”Jamie didn’t wait to hear anything else. He slipped past Max and down the hall, heart racing, shoes squeaking faintly against the floor as he ducked into the bathroom and locked the door behind him.He braced his hands on the sink and leaned forward, breathing hard.Okay.Okay.He turned the tap on and splashed cold water over his wrists, then his face, staring at his reflection like it might give him instructions.Max didn’t know.He couldn’t know.Even if Jamie sounded like JPEG. Even if his voice did that stupid thing when he was nervous. Lots of people sounded alike. That meant nothing.Max didn’t know he was gay.Max didn’t know he couldn’t stop thinking about him.Max didn’t know that standing that close, smelling him, feeling his hand on his shoulder had nearly short-circuited his brain. This is not

The interviews were going… well.Surprisingly well, actually.Jamie found his footing faster than he’d expected. The two centers were pretty chill once they got going, competitive in a way that crackled just beneath the surface, but polite enough on camera. Hayes talked big, Calloway talked less, and Jamie steered them through shared questions without crashing and burning. He even managed a joke that landed. After that, it got easier.Guys filtered in and out of the room in whatever order they felt like. Jamie let them volunteer, nodded them through, adjusted his chair angles once and then stopped fussing. He interviewed defensemen, wingers, Zach who was exactly as relaxed as he always was and made a point of telling Jamie he was doing great, on and off camera.Time blurred.Somewhere along the way, Jamie realized his shoulders had dropped. His voice had steadied. He was doing the thing. And, thankfully, Max didn't seem to take much notice of Jamie. He hovered by the food instead, lau

Practice ended without any real warning. One moment the ice was loud with drills and shouted cues, the next the intensity simply bled away. Sticks stopped cracking against the ice. Players coasted toward the benches, loose and loud again.Jamie stayed where he was, notebook forgotten on his knee. He’d been staring at Max.Pretty openly, if he was honest. But from up here, from behind the glass, he was fairly certain no one could tell. Everyone stared during practice, right? That was normal. Expected, even. One small upside of this entire situation, he decided, was that he was now technically allowed to look at Max.One major downside was that he was going to have to interview him.Very shortly.Alone.In a tiny room.Where Max would sit across from him and listen to a familiar voice asking him multiple questions and, hopefully, not recognize it.Jamie exhaled slowly through his nose and forced himself to stand. His legs felt a little unsteady as he slung his bag over his shoulder and

Jamie’s first official chance to meet the team arrived whether he felt ready or not.Coach Larsson had promised him time after practice. Short, recorded interviews. A few quick questions with each player. Photos where he could get them. Enough for Jamie to start building a picture of the season. He went back to the rink with everything he could ever need. His bag dug into his shoulder as he crossed the parking lot, heavier than it had any right to be. Inside it was his notebook, dog‑eared and already half‑full, his phone, a small digital recorder, spare batteries, a compact camera, his press credentials, a folded copy of the practice schedule, printed player profiles, and a stack of interview questions he’d rewritten three times and still didn’t trust. He’d highlighted the important bits. Circled names. Written hockey terms in the margins like spells he could cast if things went wrong.Neutral zone. Line change. Ice time. Starter. Backup. If he said enough hockey words out loud and st

Jamie got home just in time to see an old Jeep roll into the lot.It rattled like it had more history than safety features, sun‑faded paint, one door a slightly different shade than the rest. It slowed near the dorm entrance, music thumping faintly through open windows, laughter spilling out with it.Jamie slowed, eyeing it from a distance. Then Zach climbed out.He looked relaxed, hoodie half‑unzipped, hair a little mussed like he’d just been dropped off mid‑conversation. He said something over his shoulder that made the guys in the Jeep laugh, then slammed the door shut and headed toward the building.Jamie ran after him.“Zach—hey!”Zach turned at the sound of his name, surprise flashing briefly across his face before it smoothed into an easy grin. “Jamie! What’s up, man?”Jamie slowed as he reached him, suddenly aware of his own breathing. He bent forward slightly, hands braced on his thighs, lungs burning more than they should have.“Hockey,” he panted.Zach grinned wider. “Hocke
