Chapter 4

Author: Sankey
"He has psychological problems," Cassadee added.

I staggered backward, collapsing onto the floor.

Still leaning against Cassadee's shoulder, Colin secretly shot me a triumphant smile.

"Listen carefully, Emmett," Cassadee said, looking down at me from above, her tone icy enough to freeze. "Either you apologize to Col right now, or you don't ever come back to this company again."

I looked up at the woman standing before me, feeling both familiar and so unfamiliar.

Three years as partners who put their lives on the line together. We'd trusted each other with our backs. But now, to her, I couldn't even compare to a total stranger.

"I…"

I'd barely uttered the word when a violent wave of dizziness washed over me. Cassadee's and Colin's faces blurred and twisted before my eyes.

My body began to convulse uncontrollably. Every spasm felt like an electric shock ripping through me, as though my life were draining away at an alarming speed.

"Emmett! Emmett, what's wrong?"

Colin rushed over, panic filling his voice. He crouched next to me and reached to unbuckle my safety harness.

"Let me get this off you! That way, you can breathe easier!"

I tried to pull away, but my body wouldn't obey. His movements were incredibly rough, forcefully tearing at my skin that had been blistered by the high heat. The harness dug deeper into my chest, turning my already labored breathing into a shallow wheeze.

The suffocating sensation hit its peak, and I started coughing violently. He was trying to kill me faster!

Summoning my last sliver of strength, I jerked my head to the side and swung my hand across his face.

Colin staggered back, shrieking. Then, he turned to Cassadee and huffed, "He hit me! Is he still blaming me for damaging the pipeline? I was only trying to save him! Why is he treating me like this?"

Cassadee rushed over. She hoisted me off the ground, her grip so punishing it felt as though she were going to crush my collarbone.

"Col was just being nice and helping you, and you still attacked him? I finally see you for who you are, Emmett! You're just a cold-blooded monster! There's no place for someone like you in our company!"

Then, she threw me back onto the floor.

Darkness swallowed my vision completely, but I could still hear Colin's fake sniffling.

Suddenly, a sharp alarm and the pounding of boots tore through the roar of the fire, followed by several beams of powerful flashlights piercing the smoke.

A squad dressed in black special-operations firefighting gear charged into the warehouse. In the lead was the district's chief, Rebecca Stone.

"Move!"

She shoved Cassadee aside and knelt right beside me. In one smooth motion, she scanned my vital signs with a cardiac monitor and fitted an emergency oxygen mask over my face. Every movement was precise and controlled.

Then, she calmly relayed her orders into the radio clipped to her shoulder, "Severe hypoxia accompanied by a loss of consciousness. Establish an IV line immediately and prepare for CPR!"

Cassadee blinked in confusion. "What? Severe hypoxia? He's just throwing a tantrum. How can it be that serious? And what are you doing here, Chief Stone?"

Rebecca didn't even look up. While directing the special operations unit to administer emergency treatment, she answered coldly, "I received a mandatory intervention request."

"Cassadee Flack," she continued, her voice as cold as ice. "As the officer in command, you have been derelict in your duties and grossly mishandled the situation. Report back and await formal investigation."

The firefighters quickly secured me to a stretcher. As high-purity oxygen flooded my lungs, my numb limbs finally regained a sliver of sensation.

As they carried me out past Cassadee, Rebecca's radio crackled.

The city's deputy chief spoke through the speaker, his voice stern, "Cassadee Flack, following assessment by the Incident Command, you're immediately relieved of all on-scene command authority. All duties are suspended effective immediately.

"You will also personally bear all of Emmett Doherty's medical expenses, as well as the equipment losses and rescue delays resulting from this incident.

"Until the investigation is completed, you are strictly prohibited from participating in any rescue operations."

"Em! I was wrong," Cassadee rasped out.A deathly silence fell over the entire auditorium, and every camera in the room swiveled to focus on us.I looked at her, my face completely expressionless."I can't get a job! No company will even interview me anymore!"She clawed at the red-carpeted steps leading up to the stage. "I'm nothing without you! That bastard Colin was sent overseas by his family ages ago. They were all lying to me!"From below the stage, whispers rippled through the crowd."Emmett, I'm begging you. Forgive me. Let's get married! Let's start over!"Her voice grew increasingly frantic, laced with a desperate sob that echoed harshly through the vast auditorium. "I swear I'll listen to you from now on! I won't mess up again!""Security," I said into the microphone, my voice devoid of any emotion."No!" Cassadee yelped, shaking her head in panic. She crawled forward on her knees and tried to grab the hem of my pants. "Em, let me finish! We used to be the best par

10%... 30%... 70%... 100%"Factory Reset Complete".Once the Flack siblings were taken away, the ICU finally fell quiet.Rebecca handed me a glass of warm water. I could feel the warmth of her palm lingering on the glass."Get some rest," she said, her voice steady.Holding the glass, I suddenly felt my nose sting. No one had spoken to me in such a tone all these years in the company. It wasn't an order or a command—just a simple statement of concern."Thank you, Chief Stone.""Call me Rebecca," she said, sitting by the bed. "We came out of that fire together. We're comrades-in-arms now.""They'll pay for what they did," she added.Comrades-in-arms. Those words burned hot.…One week later, Rebecca walked in, a bright smile on her face."Great news, Emmett."She dropped a file on the table."The inspection report for the fire-retardant materials from Sawyer's company is out. Cutting corners, substituting quality materials with inferior ones—the evidence is ironclad."Hea

The searing pain in my lungs made me almost forget how to breathe. When Colin saw me stay silent, he grew even more agitated."You think you're so incredible? Without you, Cassadee would still be a hero! She was already sick and tired of living in your shadow!"He dashed forward a few steps, his voice rising with a vicious kind of satisfaction."If you hadn't been hogging the position of tactical rescue team leader, she wouldn't have been the subject of all that gossip!"Cassadee's face turned ashen as she shot up from the floor."Col! What nonsense are you saying?""Nonsense?"Colin scoffed coldly, but even more tears glistened in his eyes, as if he'd suffered the greatest grievance. "Is it nonsense? How many times have you complained to me, saying that Emmett was too talented and that it made you look bad as his captain? "Didn't you say that once you earned credit for this last rescue, you'd transfer him to logistics—""Enough!" Cassadee cut him off, her voice trembling un

"I didn't realize it would be that serious!" Cassadee cried, tears and snot streaming down her face."You didn't realize?"I leaned against the headboard. The burning in my lungs made every word I said feel as if I were swallowing razor blades, but my voice cut through the room with absolute clarity."Cassadee, aren't I the one who writes the pre-incident plans for every drill our company runs? And how many times have you signed the risk assessment in the field? What gave you the right to be so arrogant and confident?"She opened her mouth, her face ashen, but no words came out.Suddenly, the door was slammed open again. A middle-aged man dressed in a designer suit burst into the room. The moment he saw Cassadee kneeling on the floor, he jabbed his finger at me."Emmett Doherty! Are you only going to be satisfied after you destroy her?"It was Cassadee's older brother, Sawyer Flack. He stormed over to my bedside and glared down at me with a judgmental look."My sister just made

When I slowly opened my eyes again, I found myself in the ICU. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors was strangely reassuring.Rebecca was sitting right next to my bed, exhaustion etched deep into her features."You're awake?"She turned toward me, the relief in her voice obvious."Another five minutes, and your brain would've suffered irreversible damage."I wanted to say something, but nothing came out."Your vocal cords are burned. Don't talk."She grabbed a damp cotton swab and gently moistened my cracked lips. I gave her a grateful look."Just doing my job," she said, setting down her clipboard. "It was my oversight that allowed my men to suffer such an injustice."A sharp edge flashed in her eyes."Cassadee Flack has been suspended. Her disciplinary report, along with Colin Halfpenny's, will be submitted to headquarters tomorrow."The words had barely left her mouth when the ICU room door was flung open with a bang. Cassadee rushed in, her eyes bloodshot.A nurse was f
