In the dark night, Jessica went to the bathroom alone.
The hot water dispelled her coldness. She rubbed her red and swollen eyes as she walked into a room. As soon as Jessica opened the door, she saw a warmly decorated children's room.
She gently shook the bell. The music from the music box could be heard in the room. The lights in the room looked yellow and dim. It was clearly a warm scene, but Jessica couldn't stop her tears from flowing profusely.
Maybe this was her karma. She had failed to protect her child, so God wanted to take her life.
Jessica climbed onto the 1.2-meter-long bed and curled her body up like a small shrimp. Tears from her left eye flowed into her right eye, then slid down her cheek, wetting the baby blanket beneath her.
She muttered softly while holding a doll tightly, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. It's all my fault. I couldn't protect you. Don't be afraid, I'll accompany you there soon.”
After her child died, she had always been low-spirited, like a fresh flower that was slowly wilting.
Jessica stared at the dark night while thinking that as long as she left this amount of money for her father, she could go see her baby.
The next morning, even though the sky was not yet bright, Jessica was already neatly dressed. She looked down with a smile on her face while gazing at the marriage certificate.
In the blink of an eye, three years had passed.
Jessica had specially made a healthy breakfast for herself. Even though she would not live long, she still wanted to live as long as possible to take care of her father.
Just as she was about to leave the house, Jessica received a call from the hospital. "Mrs. Jessica, Mr. Arya had a sudden heart attack and has been sent to the emergency unit."
"I'll be there soon!" she exclaimed.
Jessica immediately rushed to the hospital. The operation was not over yet, and she waited outside the operating room with both fists clenched. Jessica had lost everything, the only thing she could hope for was that her father could live well.
The nurse beside her handed over a stack of papers and said, "Mrs. Jessica, this is the emergency treatment and surgery fees for the sudden incident that happened to your father just now.”
Jessica looked at the cost details. It turned out to be two hundred million dollar.
Her father's daily recovery costs every month reached 100 million dollar. He worked three jobs at once to be able to cover it all. He had just paid the hospitalization f*e for this month. Now there was only 10 million dollar left in his ATM card. How could it be enough for the operation?
Jessica was forced to call Kevin. Kevin said coldly, "Where are you? I've been waiting for you for half an hour."
"I have an emergency, I can't go."
"Jessica, is it fun to be like this?” Kevin smiled coldly as he said, "I thought so. How could you suddenly change your character? The lies you made up are so cheap. Do you think I'm a fool?"
This man really thought Jessica was lying. Jessica explained, "I didn't lie to you. I was the one who couldn't accept it before. I thought you did this to me because you had a hard time explaining. But now I understand. A marriage promise like this was unnecessary from the start. I am willing to divorce you. I didn't come because my father's heart disease relapsed and he had to have surgery..."
"Is he dead?" Kevin asked. Jessica felt strange, how could anyone talk like this?
"Not yet, he's being rescued. Kevin, the cost of the operation is two hundred million dollar. Can you give me 20 billion dollar first? I promise, I will divorce you!"
The man replied with a laugh, "Jessica, you should understand. I really hope your father dies. I can give you the money, but only after you get the divorce certificate.”
Then a busy tone was heard from the cellphone. Jessica's face looked incredulous. She remembered that Kevin still respected her father very much when they were dating. However, the tone of hatred that came from the cellphone earlier was not funny at all.
"Kevin wants my father to die? Why?" she asked herself.
If it was connected to the bankruptcy of the Iskandar family two years ago, everything seemed clearer.
"How could it be such a coincidence?"
"Maybe Kevin was the one who bankrupted the Iskandar family, but what wrong did the Iskandar family do to Kevin?" Jessica thought again.
Jessica couldn't think too much. The most important thing right now was that she had to collect two hundred million dollar for medical expenses first.
When the operating room door opened, Jessica rushed forward and asked, "Doctor Albert, how is my father's condition?”
"Mrs. Jessica, don't worry. Mr. Arya is very lucky to have survived the critical condition. However, psychologically, he is still too weak. For the time being, don't let his emotions be shaken again."
"I understand." Jessica breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Thank you, Doctor Albert."
While Arya was still in a coma, Jessica asked the nurse, "My father's mental condition is quite good, why did he suddenly have a heart attack?"
The nurse immediately replied, "Mr. Arya has been in a very happy mood lately. He also said that he wanted to eat shrimp dumplings or something. I thought it would only take ten minutes or so to get there and back, so I went to buy Mr. Arya some porridge. When I came back, he had already been taken to the emergency unit. Mrs. Jessica, this is all my fault!"
"Did my father meet anyone before you left?”
"No, there was nothing different about Mr. Arya before I left. He even said that you liked apam cakes at Rindani Restaurant, so he also asked me to buy them. Who would have thought that this would suddenly happen..."
Jessica always felt that this matter was not as simple as it seemed. After asking the nurse to take good care of Arya, she walked quickly to the nurse's office to inquire about visitor registration.
"Mrs. Jessica, no one visited Mr. Arya this morning," a nurse replied.
"Thank you."
"Oh yes, Mrs. Jessica, has Mr. Arya's bill been paid?"
With an awkward look on her face, Jessica said, "I'll pay it off right away. Sorry."
She came out of the nurse's room and ordered a taxi to rush to the Civil Registry Office. However, where was Kevin?
Jessica anxiously dialed Kevin's cell phone number. "I've arrived at the Civil Registry Office. Where are you?" she asked.
"In the office."
"Kevin, can you come to do the divorce administration now?”
Kevin sneered and said, "Which do you think is more important, negotiating a contract worth trillions of dollar or you?"
"I can wait for you to finish negotiating the contract. Kevin, just think of it as me begging you, my father really needs money right now," Jessica said.
"If he dies, I'll pay for his funeral expenses," Kevin replied.
After saying that, Kevin hung up the phone. His phone was no longer active when she tried to contact him again.
The heavy rain was like a big net enclosing Jessica, making it impossible for her to breathe inside.
She crouched at the bottom of the bus stop while looking at the street full of people passing by. Jessica looked regretful.
If she hadn't taken a leave from her studies because she was pregnant, Jessica would have received her graduation certificate by now. With her abilities and education, she would have had a very bright future.
Who would have thought that the Iskandar family would end up going bankrupt? Kevin, who initially treated her like a valuable treasure, suddenly changed. Jessica lost everything in a short time.
A year ago, Kevin asked someone to take all of Jessica's jewelry and branded bags. The only valuables on her body right now were their wedding rings. Jessica took off the ring and walked into a high-end jewelry store with steady steps.
While watching Jessica, who was wearing cheap clothes and was soaking wet, the shop assistant said, "Ma'am, do you have the invoice and proof of purchase?"
"Yes, I have it." Jessica pretended not to see the shop assistant looking at her. She lowered her head and handed over the invoice immediately.
"Okay, Ma'am. We need to send this ring for authenticity checking. I'll let you know the results tomorrow. How about it?"
Jessica licked her dry lips a little anxiously, then said, "I really need money. Can the process be faster?"
"Okay, I'll try my best. Ma'am, wait a moment..."
Before the shop assistant had time to take it, suddenly a white and delicate hand pressed the lid of the jewelry box and said, "This ring is very beautiful, I want it."
When Jessica looked up, she saw a face that made her feel disgusted, it turned out to be Maudy!
After finishing her water, Jessica returned to the living room to play with Anya. She helped build a little house out of sofa cushions, made a tiny blanket from a handkerchief, and drew windows on paper that they then taped to the sides of the “house.”As midday came and the sun grew hotter, Anya yawned several times. Jessica led her to the bedroom, laying her down in her arms and humming a soft song.Gradually, Anya drifted off to sleep.Jessica stayed there, staring at the plain white ceiling. She felt like the room itself—calm, without unnecessary decorations, but enough.By late afternoon, her phone rang softly. She stepped out of the room so as not to wake Anya. On the screen, Kevin’s name appeared. Jessica stared at it for a few seconds before answering.“Hello?”“Hi, Jess…” Kevin’s voice was cautious. “Can we talk for a bit?”Jessica hesitated. “Now?
Jonas raised his eyebrows. “Well, maybe you don’t know me that well yet.”Jessica laughed softly—a laugh she hadn’t allowed herself to feel freely in a while. It felt good, having that lightness in her again. Free, easy.“Anya,” Jonas called gently as he approached. “Can I sit here?”Anya patted the floor beside her. “Sit here. We’ll build a big bridge.”Jessica smiled. She let Jonas sit and help with the blocks. The three of them formed a small, warm circle. Block by block, color by color, they stacked and arranged. Sometimes it leaned. Sometimes it fell. But they always built it back up together. Before long, Anya began to yawn. She leaned against Jessica’s arm and rubbed her eyes.“Sleepy, sweetheart?” Jessica asked softly.Anya nodded sleepily.Jessica stood, lifting Anya in her arms—her body now heavier, but still
“Auntie, is this a bridge?” she asked, glancing up and pointing at the blocks.Jessica nodded. “Yes, sweetheart. A very beautiful bridge.”Anya giggled, then returned to her task. At the same time, Jessica turned toward the kitchen. She could hear dishes being washed gently, and her father’s breath occasionally shaky with age. Yet, there were no complaints. No angry voices or demands. It had been a long time since Jessica experienced such a peaceful morning. Before, mornings were the most exhausting time: waking up nauseous, hiding the pain, pretending everything was fine. But now, morning had turned into something gentle. She knew her body wasn’t fully healed—there would still be tired days, follow-up visits, and restrictions—but the weight in her chest no longer felt the same.Anya called out again, “Auntie, let’s make a house?”Jessica smiled. “Let’s do it.&rdqu
About half an hour later, Randy emerged from his room, his hair still slightly damp and his shirt a bit wrinkled. “Have you eaten breakfast?”Jessica shook her head. “Not yet, Dad. But Anya’s had her milk.”“Good.” Randy walked to the kitchen, then peeked into the living room. “You look fresher today.”Jessica nodded. “This morning feels lighter.”Randy didn’t say anything else, but the calm smile on his face said it all. He started taking out ingredients for breakfast: eggs, bread, and some leftover stir-fry. Jonas stood up and joined him in the kitchen, as usual offering small help—sometimes accepted, sometimes declined.Jessica remained in the living room, now tidying up Anya’s scattered blocks. Her hands felt stronger today. Her eyes no longer puffy. And for the first time in a long while, she felt not just like she was surviving—but truly living.A
Soon after, Randy came inside, hanging his jacket by the door. “You’ve already cleaned up the kitchen? Looks like I’ve got no chores left today.”Jessica stood and gave her father a quick hug. “It’s team work. This morning, kitchen duty was ours.”Randy smiled and kissed his daughter’s head. “You look fresher this morning.”Jessica nodded. “I do feel better, Dad.”The three of them sat at the dining table, sipping tea and nibbling on biscuits. There were no heavy conversations—just light chatter about blooming flowers in the garden and the neighbor who recently replaced their fence. Jessica listened patiently. She had a quiet desire to capture this morning in her memory. A peaceful morning, without pressure, without big decisions. Just love, in its simplest form. After a while, Jonas glanced at his watch. “I need to head to the hospital—one of my patients need
Jessica nodded. “I know. But… I’m scared. Scared this happiness might not be real. Scared I’m hoping too much.”“That just means you’re human,” Randy replied calmly. “All you need is one thing: allow yourself to believe. Just a little. A little is enough to take the next step.”Jessica gave a faint smile. “I want to believe, Dad.”Randy took her hand—warm and steady. “You’ve come this far. That’s more than enough for today.”The front door creaked open. Anya toddled over in her elephant-print pajamas, slightly loose-fitting. “Auntieee! Hug!”Jessica laughed—finally, a light, genuine laugh—and opened her arms wide. “Come here, sweetheart…”Anya jumped into her lap, nestling her face into Jessica’s chest, then whispered, “Auntie’s all better now?”Jessica kissed the top
