Chapter 2

Author: Fishing Boat
Instead, they grew closer and closer to Chase.

Back then, I was too naive to think anything of it. I simply assumed that Celia and Shannon were outgoing and warmhearted, the kind of people who got along with everyone.

Looking back, I realized that Chase had gradually taken my place in their hearts.

‘Since they’ve chosen him, I’ll respect their wishes,’ I thought.

I had one of the household staff take the mute waitress away first, so she would not get caught up in any more trouble.

However, Celia and Shannon had no intention of letting her leave. Shannon even shoved her aside.

“Jeremy, we just wanted to teach you a lesson this time. That’s what you get for humiliating Chase at the dinner table the other day.”

Shannon immediately pinned the blame on me.

Celia picked up where Shannon left off.

“Exactly. How could you pick on him? He didn’t choose to grow up poor. All you have to do is apologize to Chase, and we won’t make you marry this mute.”

I sneered and stepped in front of the waitress.

“Let me make one thing clear. When I, Jeremy Cottrell, give my word, I never go back on it. From now on, show her some respect. She isn’t some ‘mute.’ She’s going to be my wife!”

Celia and Shannon’s expressions darkened when I finished speaking. But they still regarded my mysterious fiancée with undisguised contempt.

“Let’s see if you really intend to marry this mute.”

With that, the two of them left with Chase.

The guests gradually dispersed as well.

What should have been a joyful birthday celebration ended on such a sour note that even Grandpa’s gaze toward me grew colder.

“You got yourself into this mess, Jeremy. So, you’d better get yourself out of it. Since you gave your word in front of everyone today, don’t turn yourself into a laughingstock. Otherwise, I’ll be the first to break your legs.”

“Got it, Grandpa.”

After seeing Grandpa off, I saved my fiancée’s contact information and finally learned her name: Kiara Sterling.

It was a beautiful name, and so was she. But for some reason, she could not speak.

To restore the Cottrell family’s reputation, Grandpa insisted that I arrange the wedding as soon as possible.

Naturally, Kiara and I began spending more time together.

One day, we decided to look at wedding rings, so I took her straight to Hartwell.

It was Jexford’s most prestigious luxury brand, best known for its bespoke jewelry.

I had heard that Hartwell had a bestselling diamond ring. It was meant to be given to only one person in a lifetime.

A few days earlier, I had asked Kiara for her ring size and passed it along to one of the store’s employees. The store called to tell me that the ring was ready, so I brought Kiara there to try it on.

I never expected to see Chase when we walked in.

He was staring at an emerald pendant in the display window.

“I heard this pendant is supposed to bring good fortune. I’ve been having terrible luck lately. I wonder if someone has it out for me.”

“It’s just a pendant. If you like it, I’ll buy it for you,” Shannon said.

Celia glanced at the pendant and scoffed.

“Isn’t it just a pendant? Chase, put on this Rolex. It suits you.”

“Thanks, Celia. Thanks, Shannon. You two are so good to me.”

Those three really were impossible to escape.

I tried to avoid them, but I had barely turned before they spotted me.

Shannon froze. After a brief hesitation, she finally made up her mind and said, “Yes. I hope you can forgive me for what I did before.”“Then, why did you bring all these cameras?” I asked as I pointed at them. “You keep claiming that Kiara is forcing me into this, but she’s never asked me to do anything. Aren’t you the one trying to pressure me?”Shannon stood rooted to the spot.“I just wanted to win you back…”I smiled bitterly.“You brought all these cameras to capture the moment you proposed. Were you really trying to win me back, or were you just chasing the attention for yourself?”My words seemed to hit home, as a flicker of guilt crossed her face.“I wanted both. Is there anything wrong with wanting attention?”“There’s nothing wrong with that. But you knew I was already married and still came here to bother me. That’s where you went wrong. Just because you want to use me doesn’t mean I’ll let you.”The moment things got tense, the cameras suddenly zoomed in on our fa

“Who would’ve thought such a respectable-looking person would turn out to be a jerk who betrayed his girlfriend?”“Look at that guy begging him. He must’ve been through a lot to get this desperate.”When I heard those remarks, I sneered and said, “Are you really asking to borrow money for Celia, or is it to feed your gambling addiction?”Chase froze for a moment before he protested guiltily, “Of course it’s to save Celia. I never wanted to gamble. I only did it because I wanted to save her and give her a better life!”“So, that’s why you’ve been stringing along all those women, getting them to pay for you, and scamming people by passing off counterfeit goods as genuine? That’s your idea of making Celia happy?”The moment I mentioned his gambling addiction, the bystanders turned against him.“Gamblers truly have no morals. Lying comes naturally to them!”“He even tried to turn the blame on someone else! How dare he?”In an instant, Chase became everyone’s target. Overwhelmed by

I could not stand by and watch, so I found some excuse to get into a fight with them. Only when I looked up did I realize that the waitress had been watching from the side the entire time.To comfort her, I drew a smiley face on the glass window. I had hoped that she would be happy every day from then on.I never thought she would remember it for so long.Kiara signed, “After that day, I took on all kinds of part-time jobs. I was hoping to find you one day. “I had originally planned to stay abroad, since I hadn’t recovered yet. But my parents mentioned someone named Jeremy Cottrell who seemed a lot like you. So, I flew back to see for myself.“That day, I happened to run into some trouble, so I put on a waitress uniform. When I saw you, I thought you might remember me. I never expected to come across something like that… They were awful! How could they treat you like that?”Watching Kiara adorably stand up for me melted my heart. I gently pulled her into my arms and said, “With

“My Bentley cost over a million dollars! Kiara, how dare you smash my car? I’ll make sure you pay for this, even if it leaves you flat broke!” Celia screamed angrily.Kiara signed nonchalantly, “If I dared to do it, I clearly don’t care about a little money like that. You used your car to stop Jeremy from marrying me, so of course I had to clear the way for him.”Celia stared at the imposing Kiara.“Aren’t you just a waitress? How dare you?!”Kiara slipped her arm through mine.“As long as Jeremy is willing to marry me, I’ll find the courage to face anything for him,” she signed.Shannon seemed to have a sudden realization and spoke up quickly. “Jeremy, we know you never wanted to marry her. If you don’t marry her, we’ll go with you. Then, we’ll apologize to your grandpa and everyone else.“Drawing lots to choose a wife was just a game. Don’t sacrifice a lifetime of happiness over something like that.”Celia quickly came to her senses and chimed in, “Exactly, Jeremy. It’s fine

I shook Celia off and confronted her.“You were the ones who made me draw lots to choose my wife. Now that I have one, what exactly are you unhappy about?”Celia hurriedly said, “It was just a game, Jeremy. How could you take it seriously? I know you’re only doing this to get back at us. I’m sorry. I’ve already gotten the ring back from Chase. From now on, you’ll be the only one wearing it.”“Stop wasting your time. I’m getting married today. Try stopping me again, and I’ll have you driven away.”Celia completely lost it.“This mute must’ve forced you into this, right? I’ll get rid of her now!”Celia reached for Kiara, but I moved in front of her and shielded her. I kept Celia and Shannon from even touching the hem of her clothes.Shannon teared up as she looked at me with a hurt expression.“Jeremy, you used to protect us…”Although Celia and Shannon had some standing in our social circle, they still faced malicious attacks as women. Neither of them was physically as strong a

Kiara had not only changed her clothes that day but also put on some light makeup. For a moment, I genuinely did not recognize her.Kiara glanced around before her eyes finally settled on me. She walked over with a frown and signed, “Why are they here?”I had learned sign language for a while since I was autistic and had been reluctant to speak as a child. So, I understood what she meant right away. Not wanting her to worry about my problems, I casually changed the subject.“What brings you here?”Before Kiara could reply, Thomas spoke up. “Didn’t you agree to come over today to discuss the wedding arrangements and go over the financial details? Miss Sterling noticed that you still hadn’t arrived after all this time, so she came herself. “She never expected to walk in on this…”Mom finally noticed that Shannon and the others were still there. She had never liked Shannon or Celia to begin with. Seeing them refuse to leave only made her dislike them even more.“Where’s security
