A new game had become the latest craze among Jexford’s wealthy elite: drawing lots to choose a bride. On the day of Grandpa’s eightieth birthday celebration, the two women I had grown up with decided to settle which of them would get to marry me by drawing lots. However, when the time came, they drew a mute waitress into the game on a whim. After the waitress drew the losing slip, they started egging me on to marry her, all because they wanted to make the underprivileged student I was sponsoring happy. I watched the mute waitress stand surrounded by the crowd. She seemed overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, so I stepped forward to defend her. “Fine. I’ll marry her!”

Chapter 1

Celia Leavitt’s smile vanished the moment she heard me.

“Jeremy, what are you talking about?”

Shannon Dunne quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

“Jeremy must be joking. He’s always had a great sense of humor.”

“I’ve seen how good Jeremy has been to you two. There’s no way he’d just marry a stranger, especially when she can’t even speak.”

Even Chase Murley thought I was joking as he continued confidently, “I’m pretty sure he’s just putting on a show in front of everyone to get through this. He doesn’t actually intend to marry her.”

After hearing his words, Celia and Shannon’s expressions changed, and they looked at me with disgust.

“Jeremy, weren’t you the one who said whoever drew the losing slip would have to marry you?”

“A man should keep his word.”

Their mocking words left me feeling bitter.

I still remembered my childhood. I had autism and lived in my own world by shutting out everything around me.

The doctor said that if I kept it up, I might never fit in with others.

That all changed when I was kidnapped as a child. I happened to encounter Celia and Shannon on their way home from school.

The two girls showed incredible courage. To save me, they somehow found the nerve to distract my kidnappers.

One of the kidnappers grabbed Celia by the neck and left her skin red. Meanwhile, another slashed at Shannon as she tried to save me.

“Let them go! I’ve already called the cops!”

That was the first time I had ever spoken.

After that, we were rescued, and my autism improved considerably.

From then on, I visited Celia and Shannon often. We grew up together and became the closest of childhood friends.

Back then, they always put me first. If someone deliberately damaged one of my model cars, they would tear into them for me.

Likewise, when someone spread malicious rumors about them, I would do whatever it took to find the culprit and stand up for them.

Over time, they seemed to develop feelings for me.

Everyone in our social circle knew they liked me, and they all assumed I would eventually marry one of them. That was why my family had never arranged a blind date for me all these years.

That changed two days ago. Celia and Shannon had heard about the game where people drew lots to choose a bride. They insisted on playing it.

Before we started drawing, I had even asked them, “What happens if someone else draws the losing slip?”

Celia reassured me, “The drawing is just for show. I’ll mark every slip as the losing one… and I’ll draw first, so I’ll be the one you marry.”

Shannon immediately insisted that she would draw first instead.

Since they had clearly prepared for it, I was more than happy to play along.

Instead, it all turned into this farce.

Celia and Shannon had been getting close to Chase for quite some time.

It all started when Chase offered to treat me to a meal. He wanted to thank me for supporting him financially, and they came along.

I never thought that after that brief meeting with Chase, Celia and Shannon would come to see me less and less.
