Chapter 4

Penulis: Egg Yolk
After my father's checkup was completed, I returned home to pack some clothes for him.

When the elevator arrived at my floor, I heard laughter before the doors were even open. A huge 'Congratulations' banner was hung at the door, and I pressed my thumb on the lock, but the verification failed.

Applause was suddenly heard coming from inside the house.

"Now that you've carried the bride into the house, you need to be rewarded for it!"

"Kiss the bride!"

I pressed the doorbell, but no one came to the door. I had no choice but to find the spare key hidden under the shoe rack to open the door.

William was carrying Josie in his arms, and her hands were wrapped around his neck. His lips had the mark of her red lipstick brushed against them.

Maude was standing next to them with a basket of flower petals. She was laughing while throwing the petals over their head, scattering the ground with a sea of red.

The house fell silent when I walked through the door. I looked at Josie while still holding the key in my hand. "This is my house."

William put Josie down, and she stepped forward to shield him behind her. "I know that. We're just borrowing it for one night. William didn't prepare a place for the night, and his grandmother insisted that we should go back to our new house after the wedding.

"If we didn't take pictures and videos of our new house, she would keep thinking about it. So, I offered to use our house to show her evidence. This isn't anything serious. I'll just hire cleaners to clean up the house tomorrow."

So, Josie was the one who suggested this. She loaned William our wedding and wore the wedding dress my mom had sewn her, and now, she had even allowed him to move into our house without even talking to me about it.

I did not say a word and headed straight for the guest room. My father had been staying here since my mother passed away, but I stopped in my tracks when I opened the door.

The closet door was open, and all the drawers had been pulled out. Old pictures of my mother were spread all over the ground, and the clothes she had tailored before she passed were strewn everywhere.

A few kids from William's side of the family were chasing each other all around the room, and one of the pictures was kicked to the door during the chase. While running around, someone stepped on it. It was a picture of my mother, and a footprint was left on her face.

The kids were still laughing from all their fun.

"When are the bride and groom going to spend the night together?"

"Time to send them to bed!"

All I heard was a buzz in my head as I dashed over to push away the kid stepping on the picture. "Get out!"

The child staggered a few steps and started to cry when he caught his balance. However, I ignored all of them and crouched to pick up the picture, but his crying had attracted the attention of everyone outside.

"How can you hit children, Sam? Aren't you just Josie's lapdog? You have a big temper for someone who can't leave Jose's side."

"He's just mad at Josie for having a wedding with William. He didn't dare lose his temper at the adults, so he vented it at the kids."

Josie made her way into the room and pointed me in the nose. "Just come at me if you're mad, Sam. Does it make you feel like a big man for bullying kids?"

A few relatives pushed their phones into my face. "Look! This is Josie's fiancé! He's venting his anger at children because he's a useless coward!"

I lowered my head and continued picking up the pictures, but a leather shoe stepped on my hand. It was William's. "You've crossed the line for bullying kids, Sam. Apologize to them."

"Move away," I said in a raised voice.

However, William refused to budge, and he stepped even harder on my hand. Someone standing next to him started demanding that something be done. "How can you be so smug after hitting a child? You can't leave until you apologize!"

About eight people started surrounding me. Someone grabbed me by the arm, and another pushed me down by the shoulders. They pressed me down when I tried to stand up, and my knees slammed hard against the floor.

William stood to the side, pointing at the kids. "Press him down and make him kneel to my nephews as an apology!"

Someone pushed me down by the neck while the cameras were still pointed at me. "Make sure the video is clear enough for everyone to see his apology!"

I could not escape their grasp, and I turned to look at Josie. She stood at the door, but did nothing to stop them. All she did was say nonchalantly, "This will blow over once you apologize. What's the point of fighting against them?"

They released me when they were finally satisfied with my 'apology'.

Some started editing the video on their phones, while others laughed and talked about how they should keep the clip and upload it online if I ever went crazy again.

Josie went to William and hugged his arm. They led the group of relatives out while chatting happily amongst themselves.

I pushed myself up from the floor and watched as she walked away. Josie never looked back, and I promised myself I would never see her again in this lifetime.

After packing up all my father's belongings, I packed my luggage and returned to the hospital. My aunt, Helena Carter, had arrived, and she was chatting with him by his bed.

The doctor told us that my father's condition had stabilized, but he needed to be observed for one more day. If there were no abnormalities, he could be discharged.

I shared the news of my eventual transfer overseas, and my father nodded after listening to me. "Go ahead. My health is fine, and I have your aunt with me. You don't need to worry about leaving me here."

…

The next day, I headed to the airport after my father was discharged from the hospital. Before I boarded the plane, Josie texted me.

[Sam, William's grandmother still wants us to visit her after the wedding. Just wait for another few days. Pick me up the night after tomorrow, and we'll talk about booking a new venue for our wedding.]

She ended the text with two more words: [Love you.]

I blocked her number after reading her text and turned off my phone to board the plane with my luggage.

The house was eventually sold off. The realtor even asked me, "Why would you sell it when you've renovated it so nicely?"I replied, "I don't want to stay here anymore."However, I still had many things kept at that house. It had clothes that my mother tailored halfway for my father, pictures of our family of three, and the furniture I bought for after Josie and I got married.Unfortunately, there was no reason to force myself to live in this house when it had been sullied by someone else. After the house was sold, I bought a smaller house for my father that was closer to the hospital and my company. The overseas project I worked on was a success, and I was promoted when I returned. I had rejected the offer to work on the project once because of Josie, but the project returned to my hands after some twists and turns. Now, I no longer needed anyone's permission to go wherever I wanted, and I did not need to consider anyone's plight of waiting for me for 18 months if I accepted a

The fiasco at our home had been turned into a video clip, which became evidence in the end. When I was away at work overseas, my aunt helped me hand the evidence over to the lawyers. I was back this time to attend the last session of mediation.William was there as well. The arrogant look he gave me 18 months ago was no longer there. "It's been a long time, Sam. It's about time you stopped this shenanigan."Before I could reply, the clacking of high heels was heard from outside the door, and Josie entered the room. William's face fell. "What are you doing here?""I'm here as a witness." She handed something to the lawyer. "I was present on that day, and I saw everything. I know who made the first move and who pushed Sam to the ground."William stared at her. "Are you coming at me because of him, Josie?"Josie did not look at him. "I'm just making up for what I failed to do then.""Can you even make it up?" William suddenly laughed. "Sam doesn't even want you anymore."Josie turn

My flight home landed 18 months later, and I walked toward the airport lobby while pulling my luggage behind me. I spotted my father right away.It had been more than a year since I had seen him, and he had more gray hair than he did before. Despite that, he looked quite high in spirits, and the fracture on his wrist had healed. I approached him with a smile. "Dad.""You're home.""I'm home."He wanted to help me with my luggage, but I refused. "I can carry the luggage myself.""Do you think I'm still a patient? You can think that when I'm 70." He laughed as he rebuked me light-heartedly."Sam." I stopped in my tracks and turned to see Josie standing in the crowd. She had lost a lot of weight in the past 18 months. She had no makeup on, and she was not specially dressed for the occasion. All she did was stand where she was while gripping her phone. My father glanced at her and said nothing.Josie approached me slowly. "You're back.""Yup."She probably did not expect my rep

A month passed, and it was soon the new date of our wedding after Josie and I postponed the previous wedding. I received an email from her at 6:00 am. [It's supposed to be our wedding day today.]At noon, she wrote another email to me. [I'm outside the hotel entrance.]Josie emailed me a picture at 11:51 pm. It was a picture of the empty venue where the tables and chairs had been rearranged for the next event. [I've waited the entire day.]At 12:01 am, she sent the last email: [The day has passed.]I did not reply. Time passed as work became busy. Three months passed, and soon it was six months later. On the day of my mother's death anniversary, I had a work meeting. My father shared a picture of an extra bouquet on my mother's grave. I glanced at it and texted him: [Did she come by?]My father replied: [Yup.]That night, he called me. "Josie waited for me a long time at the cemetery." I remained silent."She said she wanted to see your mother.""Did you let her?"

Seven days after I left the country, a mutual friend shared a clip with me. [Take a look at this. Josie had a falling out with William.]Initially, I had no interest in watching it, but his text ended with, [It was because of you.]This prompted me to click on it, and an image of a gate to a residential area was shown. Josie had gotten out of a car, and William chased after her, trying to put his hand around her shoulder, but she dodged his hand suddenly. "Don't touch me."William was taken aback. "Josie?""Don't touch me from now on," she said coldly. "And we shouldn't keep in touch anymore."William's face fell. "What do you mean? We didn't do anything when Sam was around, and now that he's gone, you're starting to draw the line with me?"Josie said nothing and turned to leave, but William blocked her way. "We've already gotten married and even kissed each other. I've even stayed at your house. What are you trying to prove now that he's gone?"She jerked her head up to look

It was noon the next day when my flight landed. The company's overseas project would last for 18 months in a country with a weak basic power facility.I turned on my phone, and numerous notifications popped up. I had dozens of missed calls from an unknown number, which also sent me several texts. Based on the tone of those texts, I could tell they were from Josie.[What do you mean by this, Sam?][Why did you block my number when I told you to come pick me up in two days?][Where are you?][Your father told me that you left the country. Is that true?][18 months?][Why didn't you discuss something so major with me?]The first few texts were full of anger, but the next ones had different tones.[Sam, I'm already home.][I've hired cleaners to clean up our house.][William is gone.][Please pick up my call.]The last text was sent at 4:00 am. [Do you really not want me anymore?]I blocked the number after reading all the texts. That night, my aunt gave me a video call. S
