Chapter 8

Emily sat at the back of the cab, her eyes swollen red from crying.

After she had fainted in Mr. Samuel’s office, she was rushed to the nearby clinic and was told to reduce the stress load on her. But how could she, when she was just about to lose her family home filled with memories of her once happy family?

Mr. Samuel, her father’s friend, had insisted she plead with the bank to give her more time, but she knew it was of no use.

The bank didn’t care about the fact that she was scammed. All they wanted was the money for the mortgage, and they were willing to take her house if it came to that.

The sound of her phone ringing pulled her from her thoughts as she stared at the screen, her swollen eyes burning from staring at the bright screen. It was Becca calling, but Emily wasn’t in the mood to be entertained right now, so she ignored the call.

Just then, a text message from Vanessa popped up on her screen.

“I really do hope that you would consider,” was Vanessa’s text.

Emily’s thumb hovered around the device screen, thinking of a response to it, but she couldn’t come up with anything as her mind kept drifting back to the conversation they had earlier today. A conversation that Emily never in a million years imagined they would have.

“You owe me, Emily!” Vanessa screamed, making everybody around them turn in their direction.

The words echoed through Emily’s head as she stopped dead in her tracks, anger coursing through her veins.

What the hell did she mean by that? She turned to face Vanessa, who was now storming towards her with running mascara from crying.

“What do you mean by ‘I owe you,’ Vanessa?” she barked, her voice raising more than she wanted. “I owe you nothing!”

Vanessa just chuckled. “You can keep telling yourself that, but you know the truth,” she said, stopping a few inches away from her.

“What truth?” Emily sneered.

“I sponsored your entire life back in college,” Vanessa said with a smirk on her lips. “All the trips, even when you were about to drop out due to no tuition fees. I paid that shit!”

Emily felt the anger inside her fading into shame.

Shame of not being able to afford those things, shame of thinking that her best friend who had done those things at the time out of love was now dangling them over her head at the worst period of her life.

Emily’s eyes now a film of tears. “You sly bitch,” she said, although shocked by her choice of words, but she continued.

“Here I was thinking I had a rich best friend that didn’t mind helping me back then, only to now dangle them back on my head. That was low, even for you,” she said, blinking the tears in her eyes away. There was no way she was going to let Vanessa see her tears.

But Vanessa didn’t care, her expression now unreadable. It was as if she was no longer that sad girl, a few minutes ago, crying for Emily to help save her failed marriage.

“Yes, I did it out of love, which I was now expecting you to return the favor,” Vanessa said, dabbing the dry tears from her eyes as she tried her best to salvage what was left of her makeup.

Emily pulled her brows together. “Can you hear yourself?” she asked, still surprised that Vanessa could ever think that this was a fair trade.

“So because you helped me out financially, I should help you carry your baby for a man I used to be in love with? Are you crazy?” she asked.

Vanessa exhaled. “Yes, you can call me crazy…..crazy because I want to save my marriage. Crazy because we both know that if it was not for me and my money, you would have never even met Richard, and I would still have a happy marriage and my best friend,” she spat bitterly.

Emily’s chest tightened at her words as she exhaled. It was no secret that Vanessa was right about this one thing.

If it hadn’t been for her money and influence, which had somehow gotten them on that yacht to attend that elite party, then she would not have met Richard.

And maybe, just maybe, she and Vanessa would have still been friends now, and she would not be hurting this much for a man who had chosen a freaking company over her.

Emily sniffed. “Don’t you dare blame me for this,” she said, remembering how Vanessa was the one who had turned her back on her first. “You ruined this friendship, not me,” she pointed at her.

Vanessa’s face fell, a tear now falling from her eyes. “Yes, I did, and I regret it every single day. And I take full responsibility for it,” she said, her voice now creaked from crying. “But you can’t deny, Emily, that you ruined my marriage.”

Emily felt the tears burning at the back of her throat, her tongue tied as the words could no longer come out.

Somehow, Vanessa’s words were beginning to form the truth inside her head.

Maybe if she had not met Richard, then maybe they would have still been friends.

And maybe, just maybe,Vanessa would still be in a happy marriage by now. But that was all just a maybe, as it has all happened the way it did, and nothing can change the past.

Emily shook her head, blinking back the fresh batch of tears that was threatening to fall.

There was no way she was going to stand here and let Vanessa blame her for all the bad things in her life, especially not to a man she had been in-love with.

She had better things to worry about.

“Goodbye, Vanessa. I really do hope you find a way forward in your marriage,” she said, forcing a firm smile as her chest tugged at her. With that, she turned and walked out of the café.

Her fingers immediately clipped to the big brown envelope slipping from her tired nails. She was not letting this slip away; it was the solution to everything.Securing the position of the envelope in her fingers, she rested her head back on the side of the bus as she tried to slip away to her dreamless sleep again. But just then, the sound of her phone pulled her back, the vibrations from her small handbag making it completely impossible to ignore.Drawing in a deep breath, she fished out her phone and, without even checking who the caller was, out of anger for being disturbed from the sleep of her dream (well, dreamless sleep)…“Hello!?” Emily growled.“Emily, are you okay?” Becca’

Chapter twenty-four“What could my husband possibly have done that you had to bring in security for him?” Vanessa asked. Her tone was sharp and demanding as her gaze turned from Doctor Bruce to Richard, then to the hefty security guards who looked ready to handle a problem. She tried to hide the irritation in her eyes. When she had texted Doctor Bruce earlier, pleading with him to stall Richard while she made her way here. After she had ignored his messages and calls, along with Emily’s, because she was busy with a certain distracting business she didn’t want to leave unattended. After mixing up the time and hearing that Emily had been bold enough to show up late, maybe she didn’t need to save her house as much as Vanessa had thought she did.A small smirk curved her lips, but she quickly fixed it back in place and turned her attention to the disgraceful scene in front of her. This was certainly not what she had pictured. She had expected Bruce to bore Richard with programs and proce

Chapter twenty-three“Mr. Williams?” The bald doctor, whose name tag read Bruce, kept calling to him.Who names their kid Bruce, anyway? But none of that mattered. The only person who mattered was standing just a few meters away from him. Richard tried his best not to put all his hope that it was her, but his stomach fluttered anyway. As he prayed to whoever cared to listen above that by some stroke of luck, the wet figure in front of him was Emily, the woman who had haunted his dreams for years. The woman he had even gone to therapy for. The woman, he hired a private investigator to follow, just to get a glimpse of her, even though it was through photos. The woman he was ready to spend his life with the one who made the thought of having children no longer feel like a rope tied around his throat.Richard inhaled deeply, willing his legs to move. He rubbed his eyes, giving common sense one last chance, not wanting to place his heart on a false alarm. But the vision remained. There

Chapter twenty-two “No, that can’t be him. That can’t be Richard!” Emily found herself screaming inside, but it only came out as a whisper as the nurse immediately pulled her into the room, shutting the door. “Miss, please, you have to calm down. Your temperature is still very high,” the nurse who had gone to get her a blanket said, trying to place a distorted Emily onto the bed. “No, you don’t understand. What if he sees me?” Emily said, although it felt as though she was screaming at the top of her voice. The sound of her heartbeat only grew louder by the second, making it difficult for her to hear herself. Her words came out as a distorted whisper to the nurse, who now had a genuinely concerned look on her face. “Please, ma’am, you have to relax. I don’t understand what you are saying,” the nurse said as she placed a big blanket over Emily, but that did nothing to stop the shiver that continued to run up and down her spine. Emily shook her head repeatedly as she grip

Chapter Twenty-one Richard’s eyes stared out at the hospital’s entrance as he raked his hand through his hair, trying his best not to grip it out of anger. Here he was, going through one issue at work and another at home. Fuck! He never even wanted any of this in the first place, he thought angrily, already feeling the pressure building between his eyes. But you agreed to it, a tiny voice whispered to him. No, he didn’t. This was all Vanessa’s fault, and he had somehow gotten wrapped up again in her webs. He needed to get this done fast and get back to figuring out how to deal with this issue with Mr. Chen, because there was no way he was losing this contract all because his manager couldn’t keep his thing in his damn pants. “Don’t go too far. This shouldn’t take long,” Richard said impatiently to Harrison, who nodded as he got out of the car and made his way toward the entrance of the hospital. He needed to get this done as fast as possible and leave this place.

Chapter 20 “If we lose this contract because of your incompetence, consider yourself fired,” Richard barked into the phone as he struggled for fine comfort on his leather seat in the back of his Range Rover, as he and his driver made their way through the city traffic on their way to the hospital address Vanessa had sent it. “I’m really sorry sir, please give me a chance to fix this.” Sam’s shaky voice slips through the phone of this speaker. “You better!” Richard said, as his grip around the phone tightened. He could hear the fear and trembling in Samuel’s voice and, as much as it was annoying that he was the reason behind that tremble, he knew it was Becca. There was no way he was going to allow the slip up of his manager to cause him this contract. “I will sir, I just need to make a few calls and talk to her, please sir.” The sly bastard was still in contact with her? “I don’t care what you do or who you call,” Richard said, deciding not to think too much into what
