INICIAR SESIÓNThe bond does not loosen when he looks away.
It only settles deeper, a low, insistent pulse behind my sternum that matches the rhythm of my own heartbeat and then deliberately overrides it. My skin feels too tight. Every breath carries the faint, clean scent of pine and steel that clings to him even across the crowded room. I know, with a certainty that borders on pain, that if I stepped closer I would taste it on my tongue.
Regret arrives a second later, fiercer this time. And my brain is reminding me again.
I feel hard pain. He is Emily’s father. The most ruthless Alpha in the region. Untouchable. Inaccessible. The kind of man who ends bloodlines with a signature and never looks back. Whatever this recognition is, it cannot be allowed to mean anything. I am the girl who was discarded by her own pack for being too weak, too late, too ordinary. He is the man every female in this room still tries to catch, even after fifteen years of cold refusal.
Yet he has not fully looked away.
In the loud hall, I let my gaze travel over him with a hunger I cannot hide. The sharp cut of his jaw. The controlled line of his mouth. The breadth of his shoulders beneath the black jacket. Silver threads at his temples that only make him look more dangerous. His hands are large, steady, resting loosely at his sides as though he has never needed to raise them to be obeyed.
A young she-wolf in emerald silk brushes past him with a soft laugh instantly igniting my jealousy but he does not glance at her. His attention returns to me instead, steady and unwavering, as if the rest of the room has already been dismissed.
The intensity of that gaze sends a slow, unwanted heat sliding down my spine.
The party continues around us. Music swells. Glasses clink. Laughter rises in polished waves. Emily reappears at my side, cheeks flushed from greeting relatives, and links her arm through mine again.
“You’re too quiet,” she says. “Come dance with me before the night gets completely stiff and formal.”
“I don’t dance.”
“You do tonight.” She is already tugging me toward the open floor where a few couples move in slow circles. “One song. Please. It’s my birthday and you’re my favorite person here.”
I almost refuse. The bond is already too loud, and the last thing I need is to put my body on display while Dominic Blackwood watches. But Emily’s smile is bright and hopeful, and I have never been good at denying her small things. I let her pull me forward.
The first steps are awkward. I am not graceful. Emily laughs and adjusts my hands, spinning us gently so that the lights blur. For a moment it feels normal again. We are just two friends dancing at a party, nothing more. Then my wolf stirs.
She does not rise with violence. She rises with heat.
It begins as a soft flush beneath my skin, a warmth that pools low in my stomach and spreads outward until my pulse feels too heavy in my throat. My breathing changes. The air around me thickens with a scent I have never carried before, something unusually sweet, like warm honey and night-blooming flowers, threaded with the faintest trace of need. It is not full heat. It is only the first, dangerous edge of it. But it is enough.
Heads turn.
A male near the edge of the floor inhales sharply. Two women pause mid-conversation. Even Emily’s steps falter for half a second. Her eyes widen as she catches the change in my scent.
“Lila?” she murmurs, still moving us in the slow circle. “Are you okay? You smell… different.”
I cannot answer. The sweet scent only deepens as the music continues, and every breath I take seems to pull Dominic’s attention tighter around me. I feel him across the room without looking. The bond thrums once, hard, as though his wolf has answered the call my body just made.
Emily’s hand tightens on mine. Concern flickers across her face, but she keeps dancing, keeps smiling for the sake of the guests who are now watching us a little too closely. I force my feet to move. I force my expression to stay calm. Inside, the heat continues its slow, relentless climb, and the knowledge that the man causing it is both my best friend’s father and the most unreachable Alpha I have ever seen settles like a bruise beneath my ribs.
I should stop. I should leave the floor, leave the house, leave the entire territory before this goes any further.
Instead I keep dancing, caught between Emily’s familiar warmth and the cold, possessive weight of Dominic Blackwood’s unwavering gaze. The sweet scent of my rising wolf drifts through the air like an invitation I never meant to send, and for the first time in my life I understand what it means to be truly, dangerously seen. Surprisingly it even wants more of this forbidden attention
I turned around. Nearly snapping my neck off in the process but I still didn't feel any pain. I hoped my ears was deceiving me but it wasn't and I came face to face with the last person I wanted to see.Caleb stood in the doorway of the empty conference room, exactly as I remembered him and somehow worse.Same sharp jaw, same easy confidence, same look that used to make me feel small even before he opened his mouth. He had been the Beta’s son in my pack. But I didn't remember him as just that. Instead my mind gave a clearer description. He was the one who smiled while he told me I was defective and not fit to be by his side, the one who made sure everyone else knew it too. The one who rejected me in front of enough people that the word spread like rot and still made sure nobody else got close to meMy wolf who was already on the verge of calming down, rose so hard fast that I tasted metal. Four years, and I just casually meet him like this. Now. When I'm not feeling very good about my
"I don't understand what happened today. Why exactly was it so awful. And my jerk of a dad-" I sighed in relief and my heart settled a bit then I proceeded to comfort her and so the call went on. Thankfully till it ended, she didn't say anything related to I and her father's complicated situation which only meant she didn't know. Good.I sat on the edge of the bed in the half-dark, heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat. For the entire call I had been waiting for the moment she would say it. The moment she would ask why I left crying, why her father’s mood had turned black, why the air between us had felt wrong all day. Every pause in her voice made my stomach drop. I kept thinking she knows. She knows about the bathroom. She knows about the bond. She knows I looked at her father like he was already mine. But she never said any of it.She only cried about the ruined afternoon, about how nothing had gone the way she planned, about her father’s foul mood and the idiot fro
The apartment door closed behind me with a soft, final click. I stood in the narrow entryway, keys biting into my palm, and just breathed. The silence here was different from the estate. It was thin, cheap and absolute. There were no distant voices or heavy footsteps neither was there a controlled presence that made the air itself feel safer and more dangerous at the same time. Only the tired hum of the refrigerator and the muffled traffic three floors down could be heard. I used to tell myself I liked coming home to quiet but tonight the quiet felt like proof that I had been sent away again. That's when the fear hit me. With such force I felt my wolf shiver in pain. Was I going to repeat the painful cycle of rejection again?I dropped the keys on the table like it burned my hand and went straight to the bathroom without turning on the overhead light. The mirror was honest in the worst way. It showed me proof that I had cried, and had did so miserablyMy hands were visibly shaking as
(DOMINIC'S POV)I slammed the study door hard enough to rattle the glass in the windows and took deep breaths in.My wolf was a living storm under my skin, clawing, snarling, refusing every command I threw at it. Between us both, I couldn't tell who was angrier. It wanted blood for the pup who had looked at Lily with open hunger. It wanted to drag her back from wherever she had fled, strip the shame from her body, and bury itself so deep inside her that the bond could never be denied again.I didn't want that. F*ck it, I had to not want that.I braced both hands on the heavy desk and dragged in a breath that still carried the sweet, ruined edge of her scent. It clung to me like a deliberate accusation. Then I let out a self depreciating laugh. “Nyx,” I snarled under my breath, the name of the moon goddess tasting like ash. “You vicious, meddling b*tch." The more I spoke, the angrier I got "A late-blooming child who cannot even control a simple rise of heat? THAT is your idea of a mate
I could not look at him. My hands were still trembling against the marble counter. The bathroom felt too small, the air too thick with my own sweet, unfinished scent and the heavier, colder presence of the man who had looked at me right now with the kind of gaze that put me in this state in the first place. What do I say or do now he's found me like this, especially when he is completely aware of the fact that my ache is for him? If my ache was truly for him why did I react like that to someone else. Before I can keep thinking, his voice cuts my train of thoughts and like before, it's short and jabbing“Explain." I flinched. I'm not quite sure it's a command, but my body reacts like he is, reminding me all the more of the gap in our status, in our control...My eyes trail down to his.. I quickly look away and muster up my courage or whatever was left of it to respond. “ I didn’t mean to-” what exactly didn't I mean to do. Feel such heat? Or let another wolf sense it clearly enough
The water was cool but it did nothing.I stood chest-deep in the wide pool, the afternoon sun bright overhead, laughter and splashing loud around me, and still my skin burned. Heat lived under every inch of me. low, relentless, impossible to ignore. My bikini, the conservative black one I had chosen earlier, clung to damp skin and felt like too little protection. Every shift of the water against my body only made the ache sharper.I turned my head.A few feet away Emily was pressed against one of the boys from her law-school circle, mouths moving, hands roaming with the easy confidence of people who had nothing to hide. Two other girls were doing the same along the pool edge, soft sounds mixing with the music. The sight sent another pulse of heat straight through me. My wolf stirred hard, restless and demanding."Why are we still waiting?" she seemed to ask. "Why is he not here?"The fear followed immediately after. What if the bond was rejected? What if he decided I was too weak, too
