The morning sun came through the kitchen blinds in sharp, cold needles of light. I sat at the granite island, a mug of black coffee cooling between my palms. I hadn't slept a wink. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw either the flashing camera from the quad or the text message on my phone. A heavy door creaked open at the back of the hallway. I didn't turn my head, but my shoulders instantly went rigid. Ryker walked into the kitchen, wearing a gray Blackwood Hockey sweatshirt and dark training pants. His shaggy brown hair was uncombed, and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked just as exhausted as I felt, but his movements were still heavy and deliberate. He didn't say good morning. He just slid a thick, white folder onto the dark granite right next to my coffee mug. "What's this?" I asked, my voice dry. "The standard Barrett non-disclosure and partnership template," Ryker said, pulling out the stool next to mine and dropping his massive frame into it. He smelled like mint and old ice. “I had my lawyers email the draft at four AM." I opened the folder. The top page was covered in thick, dense legal text. Names were left blank, but the terms were clear. "Let's go over the main rules," I said, flipping to the second page. "I'm not signing anything until my personal boundaries are in black and white." "Fine," Ryker muttered, leaning back and crossing his massive arms over his chest. "Speak." "First," I said, pointing a finger at the paper. "This is strictly a public performance. In this suite, we are strangers. You stay on your side of the hall. I stay on mine." "Agreed," he said without hesitation. "I don't have time to chase a freshman around the kitchen." "Second," I continued, my jaw tightening. "No press or students inside this apartment. The media stays outside the gates. If a single reporter gets our address or a photo of the interior, the deal is off and I walk." Ryker nodded once, his gray eyes tracking the movement of my lips. "Done. What else?" "The most important rule," I said, turning my body to face him directly. "No physical intimacy. The contract says we play a couple for the cameras, but behind closed doors, you do not touch me. No exceptions." Ryker stayed completely still. The silence stretched between us until the refrigerator made a slight noise in the room. A slow, dark intensity filled his gray eyes as he leaned forward, resting his thick forearms on the edge of the island. He brought his face close enough that I could see the tiny gold flecks in his iris. "We have a problem with that one, Cole," he whispered, his voice deep and gravelly. My breath caught. "What do you mean?" "The board isn't stupid," Ryker said, his eyes dropping down to the collar of my oversized hoodie before snapping back to my face. "And neither are the NHL scouts. If we look like two wooden statues standing next to each other at the team dinners, they'll see right through it. If we're going to sell this, we have to sell it completely. When the cameras are on, I'm going to hold your hand. I'm going to put my arm around your waist. And if the situation requires it, I'm going to kiss you." A sudden, sharp wave of heat flooded my stomach, completely at odds with the freezing air coming through the window. My mind flashed back to the dark kitchen last night—the iron-hard grip of his hands on my hips, the warmth of his chest against my back. "Only in public," I insisted, my voice shaking slightly. "The second we step inside this door, the touching stops." "Deal," Ryker said. He pulled a heavy black pen from his sweatshirt pocket and slid it across the table, his fingers brushing against mine. The tiny spark of skin-to-skin contact made my pulse jump. I picked up the pen. My hand hovered over the signature line at the bottom of the page. Signing this meant binding myself to the most dangerous, volatile guy on campus. It meant stepping right back into the media circus I had nearly died escaping. But it also meant survival. I pressed the pen to the paper and wrote Gianna Cole. Ryker snatched the folder back the second I finished, checking the ink with a grim smile. He stood up, towering over me once more. "Put something decent on. The season opener is tonight, and you're sitting in the center VIP box wearing my number." He turned and walked toward the door, but stopped with his hand on the handle. He looked back over his shoulder, his eyes dark. "And Cole? Leave the black hood in the closet. I want everyone in that stadium looking at what belongs to me."Gianna’s POV I did not look away from him. I kept my face blank and my voice flat. "Your contract is already messy, Barrett. If your ex-girlfriend is going to jump on you in the halls between games, it will ruin my image. The school board is looking for an excuse to kick you off the team, and a big public fight with your ex is exactly what the web blogs want."Ryker’s eyes darkened. His hand was still on the metal locker next to my head. He made a tight fist, and the metal wall made a rattling sound behind my ears. He did not look mad at me, he just looked annoyed by the whole situation."She means nothing to me, Cole," he glared. "I did not invite her down here. I did not want that kiss. It will never happen again. My mind is on the game, not on the past.""Good," I said, looking straight into his gray eyes. "Because if a student or a camera catches her doing that, they will know our relationship is a total lie. I signed that paper to stay hidden and safe. I do not want to get dragg
Gianna’s POV I didn't move from my seat. I looked up at the blonde girl with a cold, calm face."If you want to yell at me," I said, my voice quiet under the loud arena music, "do it somewhere else. You're blocking my view."Her mouth flew open in shock. Her cheeks turned bright red. She stepped closer, slamming her expensive bag against my chair. "Do you know who I am? I’m Chloe. I spent the last two years with Ryker. You’re nothing to him.""Then go tell him that," I said. I stood up straight and pulled my hands out of my jacket pockets. I was taller than her, and I didn't look scared. "Because right now, I’m the one sitting in his front row. And I’m the one wearing his jersey shirt."I didn't wait for her to answer. I walked right past her, my shoulder brushing hers as I went up the concrete stairs. I needed to get away from the crowd and find a quiet hallway to breathe.*****The main hallway behind the seats was packed with students buying food and drinks. I walked fast, turning
Gianna’s POV The noise inside the Vanguard Arena was deafening. Thousands of students and local fans packed the steep bleachers, a sea of gold and black jersey shirts screaming as the pre-game music boomed through the floorboards. The smell of cold grease, stale beer, and the sharp bite of the ice rink filled the air.I stood at the top of the concrete stairs, my hands stuffed deep into the pockets of a tailored black leather jacket. Underneath, I was wearing a brand-new, crisp white hockey jersey. Plastered across the front was the Blackwood crest. On the back, a massive black 88 sat beneath the name BARRETT.It felt like a target on my spine."Is that her?" a sharp voice whispered to my left.I didn't turn my head. I kept my chin up, eyes fixed straight ahead, walking down the narrow aisle toward the center VIP box. But I could feel the heavy weight of a hundred stares tracking my movements. Groups of girls in shorter jerseys were huddled together by the steel railings, their eye

Gianna’s POV The pitch-black room felt smaller now, crowded by the sound of our breathing. I sat on the cold floor, my knees pulled tightly against my chest, while Ryker stood over me like a shadow. The blue glow from his phone screen cut across his sharp cheekbones."What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "What code?"Ryker didn't answer right away. He tapped the screen of his phone, scrolled through a page, and then turned the display toward my face. "Read that."I blinked against the sudden light, squinting at the bold text of a major sports gossip site.*“BARRETT’S LAST STRIKE? NHL scouts question the maturity of Blackwood’s star captain after a viral locker-room brawl leaves a teammate hospitalized. Sources say the athletic board is preparing an ultimatum: clean up his act, or lose the captaincy and the draft.”*Underneath the text was a blurry screenshot of Ryker pulling his fist back in a concrete hallway, his eyes wild with anger.I looked up from the screen,
Gianna’s POV My back was pressed hard against Ryker’s chest. The heat radiating off his bare skin was suffocating, cutting off the air in my lungs faster than the panic from the text message. His fingers were dug deep into the fabric of my oversized hoodie, holding me so securely my toes barely brushed the floor."Let go of me," I choked out, twisting violently in his grasp."Quiet," he ordered, his grip tightening until it was impossible to move. He didn't sound angry anymore—his voice was flat, lethal, and entirely focused. He had detected my panic, and a guy like Ryker Barrett didn't ignore a threat in his own space. He reached around my waist with one long arm, his large hand sweeping across the dark granite island until his fingers wrapped around my vibrating phone."No!" I gasped, reaching for it, but he held the screen high above my head, out of reach. The gray light from the window caught his sharp profile as he stared down at the screen.
