Gianna’s POV

I turned quickly, my boots making no sound on the cold concrete steps. I needed to get out of the rink immediately. The scout's words kept repeating in my head—a liability, a fake girlfriend.

If the NHL team dug into my past to check on Ryker's life, they would find out I didn't exist. They would find out I was running from something far worse than a bad reputation.

"Going somewhere, Cole?"

I froze halfway down the back stairs. The voice didn't come from behind me. It came from the bottom of the exit stairwell, echoing off the cinderblock walls.

I looked down and saw Jaxson Reed was leaning against the heavy metal exit door, his arms crossed over his chest. He was wearing his team's blue varsity jacket, and his skates were slung over his shoulder by the laces. He looked up at me, a slow, ugly smirk spreading across his face.

"What are you doing here, Reed?" I frowned. I instinctively pulled my baseball cap lower, hiding my face in the shadow of the brim.

"I could ask you the same thing," Jaxson drawled, taking a slow step up the stairs toward me. "Outsiders isn't allowed in during closed practices. But then again, you're the captain's special girl, aren't you?"

He stopped two steps below me, making the height difference disappear. Up close, he smelled like sweat and cheap cologne but his eyes weren't looking at my face; they were fixed on the black knee brace gripped tightly in my hands.

"Is that for Barrett?" Jaxson asked, nodding toward the brace. His smile grew wider, more sharper. "I saw him limping a bit during drills today. And he looked stiff on his right side during the gala. His shoulder is messed up, isn't it?"

My heart gave a heavy thud, but I kept my face completely blank. "He’s fine. He doesn't need this. I just found it in the lounge."

"Don't lie for him, sweetheart," Jaxson hissed, stepping up once more. He was way too close now, invading my space just like he did at the gala. "Barrett thinks he's untouchable because he wears the 'C' on his chest. But if his shoulder gets worse during the first period on Friday, he’s done for. And if I happen to hit his right side into the boards a little too hard... Well, that's just hockey."

Anger surge through me, hot and sudden. "If you touch his shoulder on purpose, the refs will throw you out of the team."

"Only if they see it," Jaxson whispered. He reached out, his fingers targeting the strap of the knee brace in my hand, trying to pull it away from me. "Let me see how heavy that brace is. Let's see how bad his knee really—"

"I told you to keep your hands off her, Reed."

The voice from the top of the stairwell didn't sound human. It was low, guttural, and vibrating with pure rage.

We both snapped our heads up as Ryker was stood at the top of the concrete landing.

He hadn't even taken off his skates, and he was still in his full black practice gear, looking dangerously handsome in the narrow hallway. His chest was heaving, and his gray eyes were black with anger.

Jaxson let go of the brace instantly, taking a fast step back down the stairs. "Barrett, calm down. We were just talking."

Ryker didn't say anything, he walked faster towards us with terrifying speed, the plastic guards on his skate blades clicking sharply against the concrete.

He didn't even look at me as he stepped right past me, his large body brushed me gently against the wall, and immediately grabbed Jaxson by the collar of his varsity jacket.

With one powerful move, Jaxson was pinned hard by Ryker against the heavy metal exit door at the bottom of the stairs. The bang was so loud it made my ears ring.

"Ryker, stop!" I yelled, my voice echoing in the small space. "The coach! The scout is still in the building!"

Ryker didn't seem to care. He shoved his forearm directly against Jaxson's throat, pinning him more firmly to the door.

Jaxson’s skates clattered loudly to the floor. His face was already turning red, his hands clawing at Ryker's thick hockey pads to get away.

"I warned you on Friday," Ryker , his face inches from Jaxson's. His voice was a lethal whisper. "You stay away from her. You look at her again, you breathe near her again, and I will end your career before the scouts can even check their watches. Do you understand me?"

Jaxson couldn't speak. He just choked out a quick, terrified nod.

Ryker let go of him suddenly, shoving him one last time against the metal door as Jaxson stumbled, grabbed his skates off the floor, and ripped the door open, sprinting out into the parking lot without looking back.

The heavy door slammed shut, leaving the stairwell completely quiet except for the sound of Ryker's heavy, ragged breathing.

Slowly, Ryker turned around to face me. The dark fury in his eyes didn't fade. He looked at me, then looked down at the knee brace still clutched against my chest.

"What the hell are you doing here, Gianna?" he demanded, his voice rough and angry.

  • Puck My Sins On Ruthless Ice   Chapter 19: Unseen Witness

Gianna’s POV The apartment felt too big and too quiet after Ryker left. I tried to study, but the words on my textbook pages didn't seem to make sense. My mind kept drifting back to the way his eyes looked in the dark car. I needed to get out of the penthouse. Around noon, I noticed Ryker’s black knee brace sitting on the small table by the front door. He had forgotten it. I knew from his injury file that his right knee suffered from chronic swelling after long practices. If he skated all day without it, especially with his shoulder already bruised, he would be in no shape to play against Jaxson Reed on Friday. I grabbed the brace, threw on a big black jacket, and pulled a baseball cap low over my eyes. ****** The campus ice rink was on the south side of the university. The building was a massive concrete structure that smelled like old ice, damp gear, and hot chocolate. I walked through the side doors, avoiding the main lobby where students usually hung out. The hallway lea

  • Puck My Sins On Ruthless Ice   Chapter 18: Spell Breaks

Gianna’s POV I couldn't move. My eyes stayed locked on his lips, my heart thumping so hard against my ribs I thought it would burst. The space between us felt electric. Ryker’s thumb stayed warm against my lower lip, his fingers holding my chin steady. He leaned in a fraction of an inch closer, his eyes darkening. Then, a harsh, loud buzz cut through the quiet car. Ryker’s phone buzzed to life beside the cup holder between us, the vibration rattling the plastic. The bright screen lit up his dashboard, flashing a number with a New York area code. I pulled my chin out of his grip and pressed myself back against the passenger seat, smoothing down the green silk of my dress. My breathing was ragged. Ryker cursed loudly, punching his hand against the steering wheel before grabbing the phone. He looked at the screen, his expression turning cold, before swiping the screen. "Speak," he barked into the receiver. He listened for a moment, his broad shoulders tensing up again. He d

Gianna’s POV The applause for the athletic director died down, but Ryker’s hand immediately found mine again. He held my fingers in a firm grip, anchoring me to his side as the waiters began serving champagne. But before we could take a step toward our table, a shadow fell over us."Barrett," a sharp, gravelly voice barked.Ryker froze. The relaxed, intense look in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, professional look. He turned around smoothly. "Coach Vance. Good evening."Coach Vance was a short, thick-necked man with graying hair and an icy stare. He was the head coach of the university hockey team, and he ran the program like a military camp. He didn't look at me. His eyes were locked completely on Ryker."I saw what happened on the dance floor with Reed," Coach Vance said, his voice low so the nearby donors couldn't hear. "You're the captain of this team, Barrett. You are already on thin ice with the athletic board because of that locker room incident. The scouts a

Gianna’s POV Jaxson looked down at Ryker’s iron grip on his wrist. His face turned a dangerous shade of red, but he saw the dark fury in Ryker’s gray eyes. Ryker looked ready to start a stadium brawl right there on the white carpet. Jaxson slowly pulled his hand back, trying to act cool."Just a joke, Barrett," Jaxson muttered, taking a step away. "See you on the ice next Friday."Jaxson disappeared into the crowded ballroom, but Ryker didn't relax. His chest was still rising and falling fast, his shoulders tense under his black tuxedo. He turned around to face me. His eyes swept over my bare shoulders and down the green silk of my dress."Come with me," Ryker muttered softly. He grabbed my hand and didn't even wait for my answer, before pulling me through the crowd of donors and coaches, straight toward the center of the ballroom where couples were slow dancing under the massive crystal chandeliers."Ryker, what are you doing?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Peop

  • Puck My Sins On Ruthless Ice   Chapter 15: Athletic Gala

Gianna’s POV Friday night arrived too quickly. The university’s annual mid-season athletic gala was held in the grand ballroom downtown. It was the biggest event of the semester, filled with flashing cameras, wealthy donors, and the entire hockey team in formal suits.I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, taking a deep breath. For the first time since running away, I wasn't wearing baggy clothes or a hockey jersey. I wore a fitted, dark emerald-green silk dress with a low back and a high slit up the left leg. My blonde hair was pinned up, leaving my neck bare. I looked like a completely different person. When I stepped out into the living room, Ryker was waiting by the door.He was wearing a tailored black tuxedo that made his broad shoulders and chest look attractive and tempting. His hair was styled perfectly back. When he heard my heels click on the floor, he turned around, but stopped dead on his tracks immediately. His gray eyes darkened instantly, sweeping down the le
