By the next morning, Ethan and Clara had made sure almost everyone on campus knew about me.

I sat in my study, scrolling through the university forum on my laptop. Ethan had updated his original post with screenshots of our old conversations. Of course, he'd left out the messages where he insulted me or tried to control what I did. Instead, he'd chosen the ones where I'd answered him coldly, making it look as though I'd suddenly become a different person.

Clara had posted a video, too.

The crowd of forty-odd students parted like water around a keel, stepping aside to leave a clear line of sight between the stone archway where I stood and the wide granite steps of the administration building. The air was crisp, carrying the dry, bitter smell of dead oak leaves and the faint metallic tang of cold exhaust from the avenue behind me.The reporter, a woman in a tailored camel-hair coat, hurried toward me with a microphone wrapped in black foam. Her heels clicked sharply against the flagstones, while her cameraman followed two paces behind, the heavy rig on his shoulder swaying as he adjusted the focus."Ms. Vance!" she called, her voice pitched in that sharp, practiced register designed to carry over the surrounding noise. "I'm Sarah Lin from Local News 8. Can you comment on the allegations regarding your recent bulk purchases of restricted industrial chemicals and medical supplies? Are you currently receiving treatment for a psychological condition, as your representativ

The morning mist hung low over the valley, cold and thick, carrying a faint, unnatural smell of ozone that most people would have mistaken for ordinary pre-storm humidity.I knew better. The atmosphere was already changing, quietly preparing for the disaster that would soon tear the world apart.Inside the subterranean workshop of my grandmother’s house, I stood before the primary security terminal. The formal notice from the Office of Student Affairs glowed on the dark monitor.«MANDATORY ADMINISTRATIVE HEARINGLocation: Main Administration Building, Room 204Time: 10:00 AMNote: Failure to appear will result in immediate suspension and referral to municipal health and welfare authorities for an emergency welfare evaluation.»They were tightening the noose. If I ignored the summons and remained hidden behind my mountain gates, Ethan and Clara's story would win by default. The university would officially label me a danger to myself, flag my file for a psychiatric evaluation, and give

The photograph had been taken from a high angle near the loading docks of the regional commercial wholesale depot. It was a clear, wide shot of me standing beside a flatbed pallet jack loaded with sixty-pound sacks of grain, sealed cases of industrial water purification tablets, and heavy plastic drums of medical-grade antiseptic.By 7:00 AM, the image had spread beyond the closed student chat groups and landed on the front page of a regional news forum.«“Local Student Hoarding Bulk Medical and Food Supplies Amid Growing Mental Health Concerns”»The caption beneath the viral image carried a sharp, judgmental tone:«“While local food banks report seasonal inventory shortages and rural clinics face supply delays, university senior Mira Vance has reportedly spent tens of thousands of dollars buying up essential survival goods from regional commercial suppliers. Former classmates and close friends have expressed deep concern over her erratic behavior and growing isolation.”»The comment

The phone call from the local news reporter left a heavy silence hanging in the air.I sat on the wooden bench in the lower workshop of my grandmother’s house, staring at the dark screen of my phone. The reporter’s voice had been dripping with sensationalized sympathy, like a wolf dressed in the clothing of public interest. They had already bought Ethan and Clara’s story without question. My refusal to comment wouldn't stop the report from airing. It would only be presented as the sulky, paranoid silence of a girl slowly losing her mind.By the following morning, my silence had become a headline. On the school's unofficial forum and local community pages, rumors spread at an alarming speed. Ethan and Clara hadn't simply spoken to a reporter. They had carefully put together a trail of my recent absences, my sudden withdrawal from campus life, and my refusal to accept their so-called help.«“Local University Student Vanishes into Seclusion: Friends Fear Mental Collapse”»The comments be

Ethan sat stiffly in the guest chair of the newsroom while a young assistant dabbed powder across his forehead. He adjusted his tie again, then smoothed his collar and settled into the same expression of quiet, long-suffering grief he'd been practicing all morning.Beside him, Clara held a paper cup of lukewarm water in both hands. Her oversized cardigan made her look smaller than she was, and her bloodshot eyes gave the impression that she'd barely slept. She slumped in her chair, looking every bit like a worried best friend who had spent days trying to save someone she loved.Together, they looked like two people carrying a terrible burden.Across the desk, Marcus Brody flipped through a manila folder filled with printed forum threads, grainy photographs of my house, and the suspension notice from the dean's office. He was a local reporter who made a living digging into campus drama, adding a little outrage, and turning it into something worth watching."Let's go through the story o

By mid-afternoon, the wind had picked up, sweeping through the pine trees around the estate.I was in the secondary staging garage, adjusting the steel latches on the reinforced transport vehicle, when the perimeter alert sounded against my hip.I pulled out the handheld monitor. Camera 1 showed a black SUV parked near the iron gates. Ethan stepped out and headed straight for the entrance.Unlike his previous visits, he didn't look hesitant or worried. He walked toward the gate with the confidence of someone who believed he still had control over the situation. He didn't bother with the intercom. Instead, he took out his phone and called my burner line.I let it ring three times before answering on speakerphone, keeping my eyes on the monitor."You're standing on private property again, Ethan," I said through the gate intercom. "I'd suggest reading the high-voltage warning signs before touching anything."He stopped just short of the iron bars and looked up at the camera. His jaw tigh
