The next day, I finally got a chance to speak to Flint after not being able to reach him for days.

I picked up my phone on the bed and dialed his number. My fingers tightened slightly around my phone as it rang, my chest already feeling too tight before he even picked up.

When the line finally connected, I didn’t speak immediately.

“Brooks?” his voice came through, a little rough, a little strained, and that alone made something twist painfully in my chest. “Are you okay?”
