Her voice was mild, but the words landed like stones dropped into water. Ministers shifted uneasily. One or two exchanged wary glances.

Damien’s gaze slid toward her, cool and unreadable. “What exactly are you suggesting, Serina?”

She met his eyes without flinching. “That these payments” she tapped the parchment “were routed through accounts tied directly to Lord Travan’s estates. Unless, of course, the ledgers themselves are forgeries.”

A hiss of breath ran around the table. All eyes turned toward Lord Travan.

“This is slander. A fabrication! I have served the crown loyally for twenty years”

“Then you should have no difficulty explaining why payments for stone and timber are being deposited into accounts that conveniently feed your private stables,” Serina said smoothly.

The room erupted in murmurs.

Damien’s voice cut through them, low and sharp. “Enough.”

But Serina did not look away from Travan. “The Prime Minister would find such revelations enlightening, don’t you think? Imagin

Damien’s study was dark when I entered, lit only by the glow of the hearth. Shadows clung to the carved shelves and heavy drapes, suffocating the air with the scent of smoke and spiced wine.He stood by the fire, goblet in hand, his posture rigid, his eyes bloodshot.“You think I don’t see it?” he said without turning.I closed the door quietly behind me. “See what?”“The way they look at you.” His voice was low, strained, threaded with something raw. “The way they whisper your name instead of mine. At the banquet, in council, even tonight with the poison. It’s always you they remember. They always praise you. …” His hand tightened on the goblet until the glass cracked. “..Only you they fear.”I moved slowly across the room, my gown brushing against the rug. “They whisper because you give them cause. They fear because you give them reason. I only soothe what you inflame.”At that, he turned sharply, his face flushed with fury. “Do not dress treachery in silk, Serina. You undermine me

The Prime Minister’s smile sharpened. “Instability is a gentle term. Madness would be more fitting. The nobles tire of his rages, his blood-soaked displays. They seek order. They seek a future.”He stepped closer, his eyes gleaming. “And I intend to give it to them.”I replaced the letter, folding my hands calmly. “And where does Aria fit into your vision?”His expression flickered, just slightly. “Ah. So you have heard.”“Whispers,” I said smoothly. “That she weeps in her chambers, yes… but also that she writes letters. Reaching for sympathy. For power.”He inclined his head, almost in admiration. “Indeed. She has sent word to certain houses. Appeals for aid. A wounded bird begging to be sheltered. Some fools pity her. Others see her as a tool a way to strike at Damien without facing him directly.”“And you?” I asked. “Do you see her as a tool?”His smile was razor-thin. “I see her as a child playing with daggers. Dangerous enough to cut herself… but not to wound me.”I allowed mysel

“Traitors,” he spat, his voice carrying across the courtyard. “They feed the serpents while we starve. They conspire against me, against us all. And what is the price of treachery?”The guards shifted uneasily, their hands tightening on their spears. A small crowd had gathered servants, lesser nobles, even children peering from balconies above.Damien drew his sword with a rasping ring.“The price,” he thundered, “is blood.”He raised the blade high.“Stop.”The word cut through the air, calm, commanding. All heads turned.I stepped forward, my gown sweeping across the stones, the chill biting at my skin. I did not raise my voice I did not need to. Silence followed me like a loyal hound.“Damien,” I said, my tone smooth as silk, “you stand not as executioner, but as duke. Do not lower yourself to a butcher’s hand.”His gaze snapped to me, fire clashing with ice. “They are guilty!”“Then let the council confirm it,” I countered, stepping closer until I stood beside him on the steps. “

The banquet had ended in ashes.By morning, the corridors of the palace were thick with whispers. Servants carried gossip on silver trays, nobles murmured in drawing rooms, and I felt the weight of their glances everywhere I walked.Damien had struck Aria before the eyes of lords and ladies. A single slap yet the echo had thundered louder than any council decree.Aria had not been seen since. Her chambers were shuttered, her ladies sent away with trembling excuses. The pearls scattered from her braid still lay forgotten in the corridor, small white beads glimmering like bones. Some said she wept endlessly. Others claimed she would not rise from her bed.But I knew better.Aria was not the sort to break quietly. A mirror might shatter but shattered glass cuts sharper than before. That afternoon, I walked in the garden among the frost-tipped roses, their petals brittle under the pale sun. Cassian followed at a distance until I gestured him closer. His presence was constant now, a shadow

The banquet hall glittered with gold and firelight, a scene of opulence that could not disguise the rot beneath. Crystal goblets chimed, platters overflowed with roasted pheasant and sugared fruits, and laughter rippled like fragile glass ready to crack. But beneath the music and perfume, tension thrummed like a taut string. Everyone felt it. Everyone knew.Damien sat at the head of the table, his goblet untouched, his gaze sharp and restless. At his right, Aria clung to her role as the ever-devoted lady, pearls woven through her hair, her smile painted on like lacquer. On his left, I sat composed in sapphire silk, every movement measured, every word laced with quiet control. The Prime Minister lounged several seats away, his eyes like blades, watching, always watching. It began with a whisper, Aria’s voice, pitched sweetly but meant to carry.“I hear,” she said lightly, “that the Prime Minister has found a new confidante in

Aria came to him in the evening, dressed not in pearls and rose silk, but in simplicity. Her gown was pale cream, her hair unadorned, her face softened by cosmetics meant to evoke innocence. The corridor outside Damien’s study was dimly lit, shadows curling around the high-arched windows. I lingered at a distance, unseen by most, but with the perfect vantage to witness what unfolded. She knocked once before slipping inside, her voice low and careful.“My lord,” she murmured, bowing her head as she approached him. “I thought… perhaps we might speak privately.”Damien stood by the hearth, the fire painting his features in cruel light. His hands were clasped behind his back, his jaw tight as though carved from stone. He did not turn when she entered.“You should not be here,” he said coldly. Her lips trembled, but she pressed forward. “I was unwise at the banquet. I spoke too rashly. I only
