The council chamber was colder than the winter air outside.

Tall windows admitted pale light that glanced off marble floors, but it did little to warm the space.

Nobles sat in heavy silence, their faces drawn, their eyes flicking between two figures: the Prime Minister, standing calm at the center, and Damien, seated at the head of the table, his knuckles white against the carved armrest.

I sat at Damien’s right, my posture composed, my hands folded lightly before me. I spoke no word. I did not need to.

The Prime Minister’s voice filled the silence, smooth and deliberate. “We must address the unrest in the border villages. Reports of grain shortages, unrest among the farmers, and serpent sympathizers stirring rebellion.”

Damien slammed his fist against the table. “Then send soldiers! Break their backs before they grow bold enough to strike!”

A murmur rippled through the nobles, uneasy, disapproving.

The Prime Minister did not raise his voice, but his words carried as sharp as steel. “

The letters came to me by accident.A careless maid, a dropped satchel, a glimpse of parchment too finely sealed for common errands. But fate rarely deals accidents only opportunities.I waited until nightfall to study them in the solitude of my chambers, the candles burning low, shadows flickering across the walls. The seals bore the marks of noble houses, though something in the strokes of the ink betrayed them. Too precise. Too careful. Forgeries.Aria’s handiwork. The words within were poison. Suggestions of collusion, whispers of secret meetings between me and serpent envoys, hints of betrayals yet to come.If these letters ever reached the right hands, they would be enough to stir doubt, to brand me a traitor.I held them in silence, the fire crackling softly beside me.So. Aria had abandoned pity as her only weapon. Now she sought to forge daggers from ink and parchment. Clever. Too clever. But fire devours cleverness.I rose, feeding each forged letter into the flames one by o

It was always the small things that betrayed her.A folded scrap of parchment slipped too quickly into a sleeve.A hesitation when asked a question. The way her eyes darted toward shadows as though waiting for someone unseen.Lira had learned caution since the night I caught her ties to the serpents. But no mask is flawless. And I had learned to see the cracks.I found her in the servants’ wing, her hands busy with linens, her movements brisk. Too brisk. When I stepped into the doorway, she froze.“My lady,” she said quickly, bowing her head.“Lira,” I replied smoothly. “You’ve been busy.”She nodded, her hands twisting in the fabric. “The laundry, my lady. I….”“Save the lies,” I interrupted softly, stepping closer. “I know what you carry in your sleeve.”Her breath hitched. For a moment, fear flashed in her eyes, raw and sharp. Then she fell to her knees, voice trembling. “Please, my lady, I had no choice. They… they threatened me. My family. I never meant…”“Spare me the rehearsed

The echoes of the hunt had not faded before the whispers began.By evening, the palace halls throbbed with murmurs carried on the tongues of servants and nobles alike. At first, they were fragments of hushed admiration of the duchess who had felled the beast, speculation about the serpent faction’s reach. But by morning, the tale had shifted, reshaped by invisible hands.“…she was too swift, too certain…”“…and the beast… unnatural, poisoned, yet she knew exactly where to strike…”“…perhaps it was arranged. A play. A staged spectacle to shame the duke.”The whispers clung to the tapestries, soaked into the stones. And always, they pointed in one direction.Toward me.I sat in the solar, the fire low, parchment scattered before me as though I were deep in thought. But I heard the voices outside the door, the faint rustle of gossip spreading like a disease.“She wanted glory.”“Poor Duke Damien, undone before the court.”“Serina shines too brightly… it blinds the eye.”The door creaked

For a moment, silence stretched between us, filled only by the whisper of distant wind through the halls. I studied him, the set of his jaw, the quiet fire in his eyes. He was not pleading for the realm. He was pleading for me.A dangerous line.“I will survive,” I said at last, my tone as smooth as steel. “Not by striking blindly, but by waiting. Aria will trip on her own web. Damien will choke on his desperation. The serpents will reveal their fangs, and the Prime Minister his hunger. When they do, I will not need to lift my sword. I will only need to watch.”Cassian stepped closer, close enough that the torchlight caught the silver threads in his dark hair. “And if you misjudge? If their bite reaches you first?”I tilted my chin, meeting his gaze unflinchingly. “Then you will do what you always do, Cassian. Catch the blade before it strikes.”For the first time, his composure faltered, his eyes flickering with something unspoken. He looked away, as though distance could erase the w

Aria’s steps were lighter these days. She no longer walked with the hesitance of a wounded girl. Her veil remained, yes, and her smiles were soft, trembling at the edges. But her eyes… her eyes betrayed her. They no longer sought pity. They searched for an advantage.I noticed how she lingered near the council chambers, pretending to lose her way.In the way she asked subtle questions of servants about shipments, guards, and supplies. In the way her silences now seemed measured, deliberate, as though every word left unspoken was meant to be considered later.Something had shifted. She had found a hand to hold or perhaps a serpent to coil around her.One evening, as I walked the gallery overlooking the training yard, Cassian fell into step beside me. His presence, as always, felt both shield and shadow.“You watch her too closely,” he murmured.“I would be blind not to,” I replied. Below us, guards sparred with wooden swords, the clang of practice echoing through the yard. “Her bruise
