Chapter 5
CHLOE'S POV I sat facing Austin in a softly lit restaurant, my fingers playing with the long part of my wine glass. A soft classical music was playing in the background. The setting was romantic–low lights, people were talking softly, and waiters moved quietly, attending to guests. I still can’t believe this was happening, even as I drank my wine. Austin actually asked me out on a date. I did not see that coming. We have been married for months and our relationship had been nothing more than an arrangement. He was carrying out his duty as a father, and I was playing my role as his wife. There has been no affection between us, and we didn't make any effort to be anything more than two people living under the same roof for the sake of Jamie. But now? Now, we were sitting facing each other, looking at each other secretly, exchange a few words, and even trying to hold hands over the table. It still felt a little weird, it didn't feel natural, but we were trying. And for me, that was everything. Austin had no romantic feelings for me, I knew that. But if I can make this work, if I can make him believe that I'm Zoe, his real wife, then maybe, I can make him fall for me. And if I can make him fall in love with me, then my future will be secure. I won't have to worry about anything again. Austin drank from his wine, then rested back a little in his chair, looking at me closely. “I know this may seem… unexpected,” he spoke quietly and carefully. I laughed softly, trying to keep myself under control. “A little.” He gave me a rare smile. “I thought...if we're going to do this, then it should be done the right way.” His words made me feel happy. ‘The right way.’ I nodded, offering him a soft smile. “That would be nice.” Austin looked satisfied with my answer, and for a moment, that made me feel like everything was going the way I wanted. Then he said something that made me feel sick. “I'm attending an event in few weeks time. A launch party for Owen Pratt’s new company.” I blinked. “Owen Pratt? The millionaire?” Austin nodded. “He had personally invited me. And I’ll like you to come with me.” My heart beat faster. I have never been to any of Austin’s business events before, I have always been careful to avoid any situation that would make anyone notice that I'm not Zoe. But if I refused now, it would only raise suspicion. I forced a smile. “I'd love to.” ************************** The Night of the Launching event The place look beautiful, it had elegant lights and the floors were shining. The place was full of rich and famous, important people, wearing expensive dresses and nice suits. They were having small talks about business, and laughing while holding their glasses of champagne. Austin put his hand on my back, walking me through the place, introducing me to his friends. “This is my wife, Zoe,” he said that many, many times. I felt sick to my stomach each time, I smiled, shook hands, took compliments, and acted like I belonged here. I was still feeling nervous, but then I started to relax. I drank champagne, smiled at Austin’s friends, and even allow myself enjoy the way he was paying more attention to me. Maybe this was working after all. Then, a voice from behind made my entire body go rigid. “Austin Perkins.” Austin turned when he heard his name, I took a deep breathe and turned with him. Owen Pratt stood before us, he looked very rich and powerful. He is tall, has dark hair and green eyes, wearing a fancy suit. He smiled and offered his hand. Austin shook it firmly. “Owen. Impressive event.” “Thank you for coming.” Owen said and nodded his head in appreciation. “I was thinking we could work on something together. I believe can accomplish great things together.” Austin nodded in agreement. “I would like to know more.” Then he turned to me. “And of course, Mrs. Perkins.” He offered his hand, and I paused before taking his hand. His hold was strong and warm. But the way he looked at me made me feel uneasy. “I have heard so much about you.” He said smoothly. I stiffened. ‘Heard so much about me?’ I forced a polite smile. “You have?” “Yes,” Owen nodded, looking at Austin. I blinked. But before I could process the unease creeping up my spine, Owen continued. “Let me introduce you both to someone very important. My business partner and the co-owner of this new company.” Owen said turning slightly. I stopped breathing for a second. A woman walked up, her high heels made a soft clicking sound. I couldn’t see clearly. My heart was beating fast. It felt like nothing was moving. She looked exactly like me. Zoe. The real Zoe. My twin sister. She's dressed in a deep green gown that fit her perfectly, her hair was styled neatly, she looked strong and confident. She looked different from the woman I grew up with, the woman I had left bleeding on the floor weeks ago. But what made my stomach twist was the way Owen introduced her. “This is Chloe,” Owen said. “My business partner.” Chloe. She was using my name. My legs felt weak. Everything started spinning, like I had just been hit with really hard. Zoe’s gave me a slow, knowing smile. She moved forward smoothly, looking at me with an unreadable expression. She didn't look angry and that scared me. She looked amused. She knows. She knew everything. She moved forward, her expression warm and affectionate. She threw her arms around me in an embrace. “Zoe,” she said sweetly and hugging me really tight. I've missed you so much.” I couldn’t move. Couldn’t think. Zoe moved back, holding my arms as she stared into my eyes. “It's so good to see you, sister.” She said. Then she squeezed my hands before she let go. My face turned white. She was standing in front of me, calling me Zoe–her own name. I had spent months stealing her life, convincing myself that she was gone forever. But she wasn't gone. She was right here. My entire body trembled. I could feel Austin standing beside me, looking back and forth between me and Zoe, his expression changing from shock to confusion. “Hold on…His voice was slow, careful. “You're…” He turned to me. “You're twins?” Austin asked, sounding completely surprised. I swallowed hard, totally dumbfounded.ZOE’S POVWhen I opened my eyes after struggling for few seconds to open them, what I felt first was pain. A pounding pain at the side of my head which spread through my entire head. I could not see well at first, it looked like the room was turning around. It smelled like medicine and disinfectant and I could hear the soft beeping from a heartbeat machine. When I could see clearly, I looked at the white wall, the needle I had in my arm, and the bed I was lying in. I was confused. What I remembered last was meeting Chloe at my hotel room. And then—I felt a sharp pain. A sickening crack.Chloe.I stopped breathing for a second, I grabbed my head, touching the bandages. I struggled to sit up, I was getting scared. What happened? Where exactly am I?Someone knocked. A man came in, he was neatly dressed in a nice gray suit. But he was looking worried. He looked relieved when he saw me. “I'm glad to see you're awake. Are you feeling better? How's your head?”I looked at him, trying to re
CHLOE'S POV I sat at the dining table barely eating my breakfast. My mind was consumed with the shocking events of the previous night. Seeing Zoe alive, doing well and standing beside Owen Pratt as his business partner was something I never saw coming. I was unable to sleep since last night. I tossed in bed as my head was spinning with questions. What was Zoe planning? Was she here for revenge? Did she intend to expose everything and take Jamie away from me? She didn't look angry, but that couldn’t be real, not after everything I did to her.The clinking of silverware and the sound of Jamie’s innocent humming felt far away, like background noise to the storm in my head. I was conpletely lost in thought. I didn’t even realize Jamie had called me. “Mummy?”I didn't answer. I just stared at my untouched food.“Zoe?” Austin’s voice cut through the haze, snapping me back.My eyes snapped up to find both Austin and Jamie looking at me with concern. My heart pounded. Have I said something?
ZOE’S POV The office was already buzzing when we arrived, the kind of organized chaos that came with launching something bold and new. Owen had built this place from scratch, I had only joined him in the completion, a couple of weeks ago. After all the late-night meetings and planning. Every inch of it now reflected power—and soon, it would reflect justice.Around 3:15, Owen’s receptionist spoke over the intercom.“Mr. Perkins is here to see you.”“Perfect. Send him in.”I remained in my office for now, letting Owen take the lead. I needed the moment to be perfect.I watched through the glass wall between our offices, as Austin walked in—tall, composed, polished as ever. The son of a billionaire, who has also worked hard for his own success. Charming. Respected. Oblivious. They exchanged pleasantries, Owen offering him a drink before diving into the details of the proposed collaboration. From what I could hear, Austin was intrigued, nodding along, asking the right questions. Then cam

His little arms wrapped around my waist so tight, so trusting like he had been waiting for this moment too.Everything froze. The room blurred. All I saw—all I felt—was my son. My baby. Right there in front of me. Calling me the one word I ached to hear from him again.I wasn’t aware of the glass breaking until Austin’s voice cut through the moment.“Zoe!” he shouted and ran to her.I glanced up.Chloe stood frozen in the archway, wine glasses shattered around her feet. But just as quickly, she masked it, pasting on that polished, perfect smile she always wore when she was lying.“Oh! Sorry. I… Jamie startled me. I thought he was calling out to me.” she said, laughing a little too loudly.I could see the panic still flickering in her eyes. She was unraveling, bit by bit.One of the staff hurried to sweep the glass, and Chloe stepped back, smoothin
Chapter 1ZOE’S POVOn the flight back to Australia, sitting by the window side looking at the clear sky, all I had to think about is my cute little son–Jamie, who I had missed so terribly, his little arms around my neck, his giggles, the way he calls me mommy with his sweet voice and my twin sister Chloe, the only family I had left. My whole world revolved around these two. I had no choice but to leave Jamie behind, due to the conditions that came with my new job. It wasn't easy making that decision. When the plane landed in Australia and I walked out, I closed my eyes and breathed in, the smell of home calmed me down. One year, that seemed like ten years. Chapter 2ZOE’S POVI didn't wait. I couldn’t. Chloe said she'd come to Melbourne tomorrow. But I can't trust her. Not after she had succeeded in decieving me, ignored my calls and text messages. She probably got scared. She had no idea I was coming to Australia today. I booked the next flight to Sydney. As the plane flew through the darkness, the city lights of Melbourne faded behind me, but the betrayal still lingered on me. Chloe, my twin sister–had taken my name, the father of my son and build a life that wasn’t hers. She erased me like I didn't exist anymore. And now, I'm going to erase her lie.It was almost 10pm when I checked into the Grand Hyatt hotel. I stood by the window of my room watching the lights, my phone clutched in my hand.My fingers hesistated for a second, then I typed the message. Zoe: I'm in Sydney. That should get her attention. My phone rang few seconds later. “Where are you?” she asked, breathless. I almost laughed. “Now you want to talk?”“Zoe, pl
