Chapter 2

Author: Chill Bloom
"Secondly, I am your mentor, but this isn't a simple mistake at work," I said. "You were reckless and stupid, and I have no obligation to clean up the mess you made."

Suddenly, the colleagues who had been quietly blaming me seemed to wake up.

"You've caused enough chaos and relied on Ms. Griffin to cover for you on other days. Now that you've stirred up a disaster, you pinned it on Mr. Jameson instead? How shameless can you be?"

A tide of angry accusations crashed down on Elijah. His face went deathly pale, his eyes filled with despair. At that moment, the control room door swung open.

Wallace Brown, the manager of the cryobank, and Maya walked in. Elijah scrambled forward, almost crawling to her feet, and whined, "Maya, I was just trying to help! I didn't expect to cause such trouble!"

The moment she entered, her gaze softened and locked on him. Tenderly, she wiped his tears.

"Don't cry. I know it was just a mistake. The samples got ruined, sure, but according to regulations, compensation is enough. This is nothing. No matter what mistakes you make, I'll cover it for you."

Wallace, fully aware of the situation, flew into a rage. He kicked over the chair beside him and pointed at Maya, shouting, "We just received the last vial from Mr. Quinlan! He's injured and infertile. That was his final sample, and now it's destroyed!

"We're done. We'll all pay the price for this, and you say you'll cover it? What can you even do about it, huh?"

Despair settled on every face. A flicker of panic crossed Maya's usually composed expression.

Elijah clung to her and burst into loud sobs. "Help me, Maya. Mr. Quinlan is ruthless! If I fall into his hands, I'll suffer worse than death!"

Maya looked at me, her tone firm and unquestionable. "Theo, as the chief person in charge of the security system, you failed to arrive in time to eliminate the virus. That is what caused this catastrophe, so this responsibility should fall on you."

The unfair decision sparked anger on everyone's faces. Before anyone could speak, she swept a sharp gaze across the room. "Anyone who disagrees can step forward and sign this liability determination statement."

I looked at her, my heart turning cold. Maya was my wife, the person supposedly closest to me. Yet from the moment she walked in, her eyes had never lingered on me. Now, she even wanted me to take the blame.

When we first founded the cybersecurity company together, our lack of experience had caused losses in the tens of millions.

I had thought I would be sued by the client and end up in prison, but she lowered her head and apologized repeatedly, even offering ten times the compensation to protect me.

She had said, "My man deserves my protection. If I don't care for you, who will? Go all out and chase your dreams. I'll always stand behind you."

Her vows to me were still fresh in my memory, yet somewhere along the way, we had drifted further apart.

A flicker of sorrow crossed my eyes, but my voice was resolute. "I won't sign the liability determination statement."

Maya came to my side, only to spit the most vicious words ever. "Your dad is still in the sanatorium. If you don't want me to pause his treatment, you'd better sign."

I stared at her in disbelief, roaring, "Maya, have you lost your conscience? My dad took ten blows to protect you and ended up paralyzed in the hospital! And now, for some pretty boy, you threaten to let him die?"

My outburst drew everyone's attention. They looked at Maya and Elijah with open contempt.

She wasn't the least bit affected, though. Instead, she waved her phone like a weapon. "Are you signing or not?"

"Wait! Let me talk to him first!"

Just as I was forced into succumbing, Wallace suddenly pulled me into the control room.

The bodyguards moved at once, restraining Elijah and Maya and forcing them down to their knees. He muttered in disbelief, "The plan was foolproof. Where did it go wrong?"I scoffed. "You gave yourself away from the very beginning—that pirated software. I know exactly how advanced the security system I built is. There's no way some cheap knockoff you casually bought online could break through it."If that were possible, top-tier hackers would be everywhere. From the start, your real goal was to destroy Harry's sperm. You thought that would land you the Quinlan family's fortune, but you were nothing more than a pawn in their feud."Only then did Elijah and Maya realize that they were just tools in someone else's hands.Shaken to the core, she trembled uncontrollably and looked at me with false helplessness. "Theo, I was wrong. I was fooled by his sweet words, too. Please, forgive me just this once!"I tore through her pretense without hesitation. "You're not sorry because you were

My heart skipped a beat. Without hesitation, I nodded. "I'll do everything I can to fend off the hackers. I hope you'll keep your word, Mr. Quinlan."I strode to the computer and sat down. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Harry gently holding a pregnant woman in his arms. Could that be Elijah's sister? Why didn't they look alike… at all?The thought flashed through my mind briefly before I focused entirely on defending against the hackers. The digital battle raged for a full day and night. Alongside other top experts, I finally held off the attack. The hackers retreated in frustration, leaving only the damaged systems that required repair. Suddenly, alarms blared through the building, and loud bangs echoed. Before I could even react, smoke and flash grenades were thrown inside. I was forced to close my eyes, and a sharp pain hit the back of my head. When I woke up, I found myself on a cargo ship.…I slowly sat up and surveyed my surroundings, only to see Harry lying not fa

"My sister is carrying Mr. Quinlan's child. That makes me his brother-in-law now," Elijah said.I gave a sarcastic smile. "Once a moocher, always a moocher. What else can you do aside from relying on women? You'll be a loser your whole life, Elijah."Stung by my words, he kicked me in anger. "Shut up! At least I'm better than you now!"Maya looked at him with concern, affection oozing in her eyes. "Why bother with a scoundrel like him? You're wasting your energy."Elijah sneered. "Hey, Theo. I've made sure no company will hire you from now on. Let's see how you'll cover your dad's sky-high fees. Maybe by tomorrow, he'll get kicked out…"I glared at him, teeth clenched. "What do you want, Elijah?"He smiled with malice. "Nothing much. I just need a personal servant. Serve me well, and I might let you off."I took a deep breath, swallowing my pride. "As long as my dad is safe, I'll do whatever you want."He laughed at my humiliation. "I've never liked that high-and-mighty attitud

"And when something minor like this happens, you abandon me without a second thought," Maya accused me. "Is that what love is to you?"Listening to her twisted version of the story, I felt utterly stunned. How did she even have the nerve to say something like that?I looked at her cold, flustered eyes and finally understood. Maya was a woman selfish to the core, someone who loved no one but herself.Once that realization settled in, I felt calmer, though I couldn't resist jabbing back at her."Something minor? You mean threatening me with my dad? Forcing me to take the blame? Or crippling me and shoving me in that cabinet? Did all of that count as nothing to you? How shameless do you have to be to say something like that?"She flew into a rage, embarrassed and furious. "What's the point of digging up the past now? And besides, you weren't really hurt, were you? You're a grown man. Why are you being so petty?"I snickered. "Yeah, I'm petty. Yeah, I'm digging up events that happene

"But the root cause was when Mr. Cook recklessly installed pirated software, which left the system wide open to attack. And the reason he dared to act so boldly was that Ms. Griffin here blindly protected him from everything."Hence, the ones who should bear the consequences are they."Maya and Elijah paled instantly. He muttered weakly, trying to defend himself. "No, I was just trying to help… I didn't mean for this to happen…"The others could no longer hold back. Accusations spilled one after another."Mr. Quinlan, this idiot is the one who broke the system. Mr. Jameson already fixed it, but this woman tore down his security system to give that idiot credit. They thought there wouldn't be any more Trojan attacks, but they never stopped to think about one thing."The samples stored here belong to the rich and powerful. Plenty of people would love to destroy it. The moment the defenses were gone, hackers seized the chance, broke in, and issued false commands!"Harry curled his l

Meanwhile, Wallace finally came to. He stared blankly at the screen, at the vials exploding one after another, and his body gave out. "Everything… is ruined."Rage burned in his eyes. He charged toward Elijah, who was hiding in the corner, trying to make himself invisible."You walking disaster! You're a godforsaken idiot! Why would you install pirated software that you bought online? Were you really that short on money? Look at the mess you made! Every single sample is destroyed! What are you going to use to pay for it?"His voice cracked with hysterical despair.Elijah trembled from head to toe, crying so hard his face was covered in tears and mucus. "I'm sorry. I really meant well at first. I didn't know it'd turn out like this."He had delicate features, so crying like this almost made him look fragile and pitiful. Maya hurried over, her face full of concern. She forced herself to speak calmly."I know you meant well. I promise you'll be fine. Theo has already signed the liab
