Chapter 2

Author: Summer Sway
After watching the interview, people online started praising Terence, saying he had saved someone without caring about fame or money and deserved special consideration.

Some even argued that top universities should give him guaranteed admission on the spot.

But Terence seemed to underestimate how messy public opinion could get.

Before long, people dug up Kendall's identity.

[That's the Lawsons' daughter, right? Isn't she supposed to be some academic genius?]

[Exactly. My son said the teachers all expected her to be valedictorian material. So why does she just happen to fall into a river on the day of the SAT?]

[Do you think maybe that rich-girl image was fake all along? She couldn't cheat on the SAT, panicked, and staged the whole thing herself.]

[Honestly, that makes sense. If she wants to ruin her own life, that's her business, but pulling an innocent student into it, too? Classic rich people behavior.]

That was exactly the kind of reaction I had been waiting for.

Sure enough, after I put my phone away and looked up, I spotted members of the Lawsons' security team nearby. They had people combing through the area around the bridge where Kendall fell into the river.

The Lawsons were obviously in a hurry to clear Kendall's name. How long could Terence keep what he had done hidden?

But he was too busy living inside his fantasy to realize the Lawsons had already started suspecting him.

At noon, I was studying in my bedroom when Terence suddenly shoved my door open with a smug grin.

"Hey, did you see the news?"

I didn't even look up. "Yeah."

He let out a snort and started bragging in a shrill voice.

"You have no idea how famous I am right now. Who even cares about the SAT anymore? My future's already set."

As he spoke, he yanked the textbook out of my hands and sneered at me.

"What's the point of people like you, who study your whole life just to get good grades? You should learn from me. I don't even have to try anymore. I'm basically guaranteed admission to a top school already!"

Dad was in the living room cutting fruit for him, grinning from ear to ear.

"Good job, Terence. We're proud of you."

In my last life, overhearing their conversation was how I discovered Terence's plan in the first place.

Dad and my stepmother, Melanie Read, hadn't just supported it; they praised him for being clever.

Thinking about that made me laugh under my breath. "He's your wife's kid, not even your real son. What exactly are you proud of?"

Dad immediately kicked my bedroom door hard enough to rattle the frame, then slapped me across the face.

"You're exactly like your dead mother. Always acting like you're better than everyone else!

"If your mom hadn't trapped me into marrying her with that pregnancy, Melanie never would've ended up married to an abusive man and suffered all those years!

"Everything I do for Terence is making up for what your mother owed her!"

A dull ache twisted in my chest.

Even on her deathbed, Mom was still worried about whether he would remember to eat properly after she was gone.

I never imagined this was how he saw her.

Melanie shot me a smug look. "He's obviously jealous of Terence."

Then her voice rose even higher.

"Kendall is the only daughter of the Lawsons. Terence saved her life. The Lawsons are definitely going to be grateful to our family. Forget guaranteed admission. Maybe they'll even marry Kendall to Terence someday to repay him."

The more Terence listened, the brighter his eyes became.

He shoved past me with a smug laugh.

"When I become the Lawsons' son-in-law, maybe then you'll finally understand."

Hearing that made me clench my teeth.

I snatched my book back from him.

"She crossed that bridge every day for three years without a problem, but suddenly she falls into the river on SAT day?" I said coldly. "Do you think the Lawsons are idiots? You should stop celebrating already. Once they find out…"

Before I could finish, Dad kicked me hard in the leg.

Furious, he ripped off his belt and started lashing me with it.

"You really can't stand seeing Terence do well, huh? Now you're talking crap about him, too? I'll knock some sense into you! I'm telling you right now. If you run your mouth about this outside this house, you're dead!"

The belt split the skin on my arms and legs almost instantly. Burning pain spread through my entire body.

How ridiculous.

He pitied Terence and Melanie for suffering abuse, then turned around and beat his own son.

I stared straight at him. "Go ahead, then. Kill me. You could beat me to death, and I still wouldn't stoop as low as you people."

Melanie pointed at me furiously. "I told you years ago to get rid of him! Look at him now. He's got the nerve to talk back!"

I laughed and spat blood onto the floor.

"I was never really part of this family, anyway. You only kept me around because Grandma was sending you money every month."

Dad clearly hadn't expected me to know that, and he definitely hadn't expected me to say it out loud.

His face was red with rage as he grabbed my stuff and flung it out the front door piece by piece.

"Get out! From today on, you're not my son anymore! When we're officially tied to the Lawsons, don't you dare come begging me for anything!"

When Dad saw Grandma hurt, not only did he show zero concern, but he actually sounded pleased."Maybe this is for the best. You're getting old anyway. Time for you to move into a nursing home and take it easy. Leave the family compound to us. We'll come visit you every day."I clenched my fists tightly, barely holding back the urge to smash those smug looks off their faces.By then, the neighbors had already heard the shouting and rushed outside. The moment they saw Grandma on the ground, they immediately shielded her behind them."You people are disgusting! Picking on an old woman?""We're calling the police!"Terence only laughed dismissively. "Call whoever you want. The cops already couldn't do anything to me before."Right then, a black sedan screeched to a stop outside the gate.Hugh stepped out with Kendall beside him. His expression looked terrifyingly dark."Who said no one can do anything to you?"He pulled a thick stack of documents from his briefcase and threw the

I stepped in front of Grandma and let out a cold laugh."Rented? Mom only said that because she didn't want to hurt your fragile ego."I stared straight at him and shouted each word."Mom was still worrying about you on her deathbed, and you married Melanie just a few months after she died! How could you do that to her?"Melanie muttered under her breath, "That little bastard."She grabbed Dad's arm and said softly, "Honey, Shirley probably hid this from you on purpose. She must've been scared you'd go after her money if you found out."Dad's expression changed instantly after he heard that.He turned to Grandma with a completely matter-of-fact expression and said, "I'm your son-in-law, no matter what. How could you let me and Lance struggle in rentals while you lived in a family compound this whole time?"As he kept talking, his voice grew louder and louder."Lance is Shirley's only son! This property belongs to him eventually anyway. Before he gets married, the deed should b

The moment Terence realized what was happening, he shrieked and lunged for the tablet. Before his hand could touch it, Hugh kicked him hard to the ground."You trash! How dare you hurt my daughter!"I've already checked your parents' phones. Your chat history says it all. You planned this whole stunt to create some heroic SAT rescue story so you could lock down college admission."What else do you have to say for yourself?"Everyone in the auditorium stood frozen in shock. Then, the crowd exploded."So you staged the whole thing?""My God, I almost believed you! Good thing the Lawsons investigated everything, or who knows how many people you would've fooled!""And you actually tried to frame your brother? You're unbelievable!"The shouting grew louder and louder until Terence collapsed onto the floor, trembling.A moment later, police officers arrived and nodded respectfully at Hugh. They slapped handcuffs onto all three of them."You're under investigation for suspected as

The second those words left Dad's mouth, Terence broke into a smug grin and turned around to slap me across the face."So it really was you! You pushed Kendall off the bridge on purpose!"The entire crowd shot to their feet, pointing at me and shouting."What do you have to say for yourself now?""So what if you got the highest SAT score in the state? Someone like you doesn't deserve those acceptance letters. They should go to the student who actually saved someone!"I slowly raised my head and slapped Terence back even harder."The son he was talking about was you!"The blow staggered Terence backward several steps. The second he heard my words, he instinctively looked nervously toward Dad. But Dad only trembled and turned his head away."I-I didn't say anything!"Terence swallowed hard and opened his mouth to argue again, but I hit him with another slap before he could speak."I wasn't even going to post the video from earlier, but you just had to keep pushing your luck, s

The second Terence said that, the entire room turned on me again.I honestly hadn't expected things to spiral like this. I took a deep breath and looked at Hugh."Yes, I sent those videos, but I never once claimed I was the one who saved her. I only posted what I saw. Besides, the principal already said I earned my acceptance letters by becoming the state SAT champion. It isn't because anyone pulled strings for me."However, Terence suddenly seemed to realize something. He grabbed me and yanked me off the stage, then tore my acceptance letters to pieces."I get it now! You were scared Kendall's grades were better than yours, so you wanted to get rid of your competition for valedictorian. That's why you set her up and made her fall off the bridge. What a perfect plan! You take out your biggest rival and keep me from taking the SAT at the same time."He let out a cold laugh and puffed himself up like some righteous hero."I could overlook everything else you've done before, but thi

Terence shot to his feet, excitement practically spilling across his face. Even so, he still forced himself to act modestly as he waved his hands awkwardly. His voice even trembled with emotion."Like I said, I only saved Kendall on instinct. I wasn't expecting anything in return. You really don't need to give me anything. As long as Kendall's okay, that's enough for me."The Lawsons didn't react at all. They only stared at him coldly."This is something Mr. Lawson specifically asked us to give you."Anyone with eyes could tell this "gift" wasn't going to be anything pleasant.Unfortunately, Terence was too busy fantasizing to notice. He straightened his clothes and walked toward the stage while talking."My dream schools have always been Clearwater University and Northgate University. Even though I missed the SAT this year, I've already started preparing to retake it next year. I believe if I work hard enough, I'll still get in eventually, so you really don't have to…"Before
