Chapter 2 A Mother's Grief

ผู้เขียน: Perfect Timing
"Stop right there!" Isla's mother, Elowen York, came storming over. The moment she saw her daughter lying motionless on the ground, her eyes reddened, and she quickly knelt down, pulling Isla's coat closed over her.

She patted Isla's body and gripped her hand, tears spilling down uncontrollably. "My girl, what a cruel death you've met! It's almost New Year's, how are we supposed to celebrate now? You've left us all behind—how are your father and I supposed to live on?"

Her cries struck a chord with the crowd. A few older onlookers began wiping their tears, joining in her grief.

Felix, seeing his mother-in-law on the verge of collapsing, supported her to her feet and pointed at me. "Mom, Faye was the only one at the scene when Isla died—she did it."

"Mrs. Kingsley, I—"

I had barely spoken when Elowen whipped her head around and, without hesitation, slapped me hard. "My daughter always treated you like a sister, Faye, and this is how you repay her?"

I pressed a hand against my burning cheek, forcing down my anger. "I respect you as an elder, so I'll take that slap. But your daughter's death has nothing to do with me."

"Bullshit!" Elowen snapped, trembling with fury. "She was perfectly fine when she left home this morning—happy, loved, with a good family. Who goes walking by the river for no reason? You must've pushed her! You're thirty and still single—you were jealous! Jealous that she had a husband and a child, that she was living a better life than you. You're wicked—no better than an animal!"

Her tirade drew murmurs of disgust from the onlookers. One woman shook her head and said, "People these days are so twisted inside. They take it out on anyone, even people they know. It's terrifying."

"Poor family." Another sighed. "What kind of heartless woman does that? She's pure evil."

"Exactly—a happy New Year's Eve has turned into a day of mourning. The old forced to see their young one buried... It's tragic."

The crowd's pity only fueled Elowen's grief. She lunged at me, but I dodged, and she fell hard onto the ground. Wailing, she beat her fists against the pavement. "You heartless witch! Give me back my daughter! You might as well kill me too, while you're at it!"

Seeing her throw herself into hysterics, I'd had enough. Without thinking, I darted to Isla's side and yanked off her coat. Felix, startled, rushed over to grab it back. When I refused to let go, he suddenly dropped to his knees.

"Please, Faye," he begged, voice trembling. "Isla's gone. Just let her leave with some dignity. Give me her coat so she can go in peace, please? If you're angry, yell at me. Don't take it out on her. I'm the one who turned you down. It's my fault."

'What?!' I stared at him, wide-eyed, stunned that he would dare pull something like that.

It didn't take long before the cops arrived. After a round of questioning, the truth came out completely. My name was finally cleared, and Isla and her husband were sentenced to prison. Her mother, Elowen, ended up with a concussion from that self-inflicted collision. The judge took into account Elowen's old age and the fact that they had a young child who needed care, so she wasn't sent to jail. But once her injuries healed, she was still required to perform community service as part of her punishment.During the trial, Isla tried to play the sympathy card. She claimed she only did what she did because she was a mother trying to secure a better future for her daughter. But the law doesn't bend for pity. Everyone is equal before it—and such malicious extortion could never be forgiven or excused. When Isla finally realized there was no way out, she threw all dignity aside, pulled her husband down with her, and the two of them knelt before me in tears. "Faye, please… forgive me this

"Fine. Since you insist that I'm a liar, I won't bother to argue anymore. The cops will be here soon, and when they arrive, whether she really drowned or not will come to light.""You think I'm afraid?!" Elowen jumped in fury. "I won't cower even in front of the police. You're a wicked woman who bullied my daughter, and I'm just a poor old lady trying to protect her. What could I possibly have done wrong?"Then, she squeezed out a few tears, hoping to win everyone's sympathy. Unfortunately for her, as more evidence surfaced and the logic began to fit together, people were clearly no longer as convinced by their story as they had been earlier.A thought suddenly struck me, and I hurried to say, "The footage from the sanitation worker's video might not be very clear, but think about it—someone who falls into the water by accident would instinctively struggle. But look at the video again. When she fell in, she was calm, not even a hint of struggle."My words instantly set off a wave o

The moment the sanitation worker mentioned there was a video, everyone's eyes snapped toward her phone."Hurry up, ma'am—play it! We all want to see who's telling the truth and who's lying.""Yeah, once we see the video, everything will be clear."Felix broke into a nervous sweat. His eyes darted around as he tried to threaten her. "Lady, think carefully before you say anything. You can get away with a lot of things, but not running your mouth. Watch what you say—what goes around comes around."Seeing her son-in-law panic, Elowen quickly chimed in, "They say if it's none of your business, stay out of it. Why are you poking your nose into ours? Careful, you end up regretting it."The sanitation worker shot them both a glare. "At least I still have a conscience. What goes around comes around—even in good ways."With that, she unlocked her phone and played the video in front of everyone. On screen, Isla and I were walking side by side, chatting as we headed toward the river. I hand

"That's right," Elowen urged, stamping her foot in frustration. "Don't be so stubborn. We're doing this for your own good! It's just a prize ticket—if you end up in jail over it, that'll ruin your whole life. Think it through carefully!"I quirked a brow. "Just a prize ticket? Who do you think you are to say that with a straight face? If someone's willing to fake their death and frame me for it, stirring up such a huge scene, do you really think the prize is small? Mrs. Kingsley, you're old enough to know better—how can you lie through your teeth like that?"My merciless words drained the color from her face. She huffed and switched to the tone of a scolding elder. "Is this how you talk to your parents too, Garland? Is this how they raised you to be?""How my parents raised me is none of your business," I replied coolly. "But one thing's for sure—they taught me how to be a decent person. Can you say the same?"Felix, seeing his mother-in-law lose the argument, quickly pulled her as

"Don't listen to her nonsense!" Elowen shouted. "She claims she won it in a company draw—who can prove that? There's no name written on it either!"Isla sneered. "You couldn't stand to see that I have a happy marriage and Felix is gentle and considerate, so you pushed me into the river to drown me. You figured once I was gone, you could marry him openly."I couldn't believe it—Isla wasn't just obsessed with money, she was delusional about love too. That useless man who couldn't do anything right and only knew how to eat—I liked him?! I wouldn't marry him if he were the last man on earth!Felix, flattered by his wife's praise, turned smugly toward me. "You're just trying to get back at me and took it out on my wife. Let me make this clear, though—I'll love no one but her for the rest of my life. You'd better stop having those thoughts about me."I almost gagged. How could someone be this full of himself? But his little "declaration of love" still melted the hearts of the crowd."A

Isla had barely cracked a smile after snatching the prize ticket when her expression froze solid. She shrieked and lunged at me again. "You bitch! How dare you trick me?! This isn't the real prize ticket—hand over the real one!"I kicked her away and demanded flatly, "Why don't you explain why you faked your death first, Kingsley?"Felix, seeing me go after his wife, jabbed a finger at me and cursed, "What are you talking about? Fake her death?! She was lying there, the water she swallowed slowly drained out, and once she could breathe again, she came back around. You shameless witch—you pushed my wife into the river and now you're slandering her, saying she faked her death! Lucky for you, she survived, or you'd be paying with your life!"The onlookers were stunned."She… came back from the dead?""Staged death? That's ridiculous. Why would anyone lie on the ground for so long in this crazy weather? All for some fake prize ticket?""Oh, maybe she just got lucky and came around on
