Harrison stared at Violet for a long moment, his expression unreadable, then he nodded slowly, as if coming to a decision.

"You're right," He said quietly. "I should have done this weeks ago."

Violet's blood turned to ice. "What?"

"I'll take you to a facility tonight," Harrison continued, his voice taking on that cold tone he used when making decisions. "Somewhere private and discreet. They'll be able to help you there."

"I don't need help!" Violet's voice broke. "I need you to listen to me!"

"First, I want to go to Harrison's penthouse," Violet said, setting her fork down. "I need to grab my stuff. My clothes, my laptop and my research notebooks are still there, then I'll go to a hotel."Jude's expression changed so fast it was almost comical."Absolutely not."Violet blinked. "Excuse me?""You heard me," His dark eyes went hard, and his jaw clenched. "Do you not remember what happened last night?""Of course I remember. I have the bruises to prove it.""Then you should know better than to even suggest that," Jude pushed off the counter and stepped closer. "Harrison threatened to lock you in a mental facility, Violet. If he sets his eyes on you again, he will try to do exactly that. He won't wait for a second chance.""He wouldn't be that bold.""He tried it in a parking garage with witnesses around." Jude said flatly. "Violet opened her mouth to argue, then she closed it again. She hated that he was right. She could still feel Harrison's fingers digging into her wrists

Violet woke to sunlight streaming through the tall windows, and for a disorienting moment, she had no idea where she was.The bed was so soft and the room was quiet. The sheets smelled like expensive fabric softener and something clean and woodsy. Violet sat up slowly, wincing as her body protested. Every muscle ached like she had been hit by a truck. Her wrists throbbed where Harrison had grabbed her, and her shoulder screamed in protest when she tried to roll it.She looked down at herself. The oversized t-shirt had twisted around her torso during the night, and the flannel pants were bunched up around her knees. Her short black hair stuck up at odd angles, and she could only imagine what her face looked like."Great," She muttered, swinging her legs out of bed. "Just great."The bathroom was as impressive as the rest of the house. It was all marble countertops and polished chrome fixtures. Violet caught sight of herself in the mirror and groaned. Her eyes were puffy from crying,

Jude glanced up at her, one eyebrow raised. "What does it look like I'm doing? Knitting you a sweater?"Violet blinked. "I can see you have a first aid kit. I'm asking why.""Because you're injured," Jude said slowly, like he was explaining something to a child. "And unlike some people, I actually care about basic human decency.""I'm fine." Violet pulled her arm back slightly."You're not fine," Jude caught her wrist gently, turning it over to examine the red marks again. "You have bruises forming, your shoulder is probably going to hurt like hell tomorrow, and you need to ice it before it swells.""Since when are you a doctor?""Since I learned basic first aid," Jude shot back, opening an antiseptic wipe. "Now hold still and stop being difficult.""I'm not being difficult." Violet protested."You literally just tried to pull away from me.""That's called having boundaries.""You're being stubborn," Jude corrected, his mouth twitching into something that might have been a smile. "Whi

The car fell into silence as Jude pulled out of the parking garage, the city lights streaking past the windows in blurred lines of gold and white.Violet pressed her forehead against the cool glass, her breath fogging the surface. Her wrists still throbbed where Harrison and Alicia had gripped her, and her shoulder ached from being shoved against the car."Are you okay?"Jude's voice cut through the silence, and Violet turned to look at him. His hands were tight on the steering wheel, his knuckles white, but his dark eyes flicked toward her with something almost like genuine concern. It caught her off guard. In the years of working together, trading barbs and insults, she had never heard that tone from him before."Yes," Violet said quietly, her voice hoarse. "I'm okay."Jude's jaw tightened, and he looked like he wanted to say something else, but he just nodded and turned his attention back to the road.Violet watched the streets blur past, her mind racing. She couldn't go back to th

"I need you to listen to me!""You need professional care," Harrison said, moving toward her with deliberate steps. "You're breaking into secure facilities and talking about the end of the world. You're a danger to yourself and others.""I'm not dangerous!" Violet backed away, her spine hitting the containment unit behind her. "Harrison, please. Don't do this.""It's for your own good." He said, but there was no warmth or concern in his voice.Alicia stepped forward, her blue eyes glittering with satisfaction. "Harrison, we s

  • Reborn, Divorced and Ready For The Apocalypse   CHAPTER 7

Violet had no idea how she was supposed to get to the strain but she had to figure it out for the sake of humanity.Three days later, she stood outside Sub-Level Three at 11:47 PM, her heart hammering so hard she could feel it in her throat. The hallway was empty. Most of the institute's security focused on the main entrances and the upper floors. Sub-Level Three was considered secure enough with its biometric locks and reinforced doors that nobody bothered patrolling down here after hours. That was what Violet was counting on.She pressed her badge against the first scanner. It beeped red which meant access denied.Of course. Harrison had revoked her clearance to this level months ago, claiming it was "protocol for non-essential personnel." Never mind that half the research down here had been her work.Violet pulled out a small toolkit from her bag. Her hands shook as she pried open the scanner panel. Inside was a mess of wires and circuit boards that looked far more complicated tha
