Chapter 4

Author: Toad Puncher
My words caught Jerome briefly off guard, but he quickly recovered.

"Don't think I'll believe you just because you say that. I know you're just trying to pretend not to care, but don't forget that Lenora truly loves me."

Some time later, Emma hosted her birthday party. Mom and Dad were away, so they had me attend the party in their place.

Once I stepped through the Bray residence gates, I ran into Jerome, whom I hadn't seen all day. It turned out that he had arrived early at Lenora's invitation.

He was dressed in a luxury, hand-stitched suit with a brand-new, priceless watch fastened to his wrist. He looked like the prized, true son of the Hatfields more than I did.

When he saw me, he smirked provocatively. "How do I look, Andre? Lenora gave me everything, including the suit and the watch.

"I told her I'm just an adopted son and that I shouldn't accept the gifts, but she insisted. She told me that even if I'm an adopted son, she loves me for who I am, not my identity."

I frowned impatiently and tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my arm.

"Are you jealous, Andre? There's nothing I can do if Lenora wants to pamper me, is there?"

When I tried to pull free, he suddenly collapsed to the ground. "Why did you push me, Andre? Don't you know that I've been sick lately?"

I scoffed. I couldn't believe that a grown man like him was pulling a soap opera move and faking an injury just to stir up some drama.

Since explaining myself would be pointless anyway, I simply kicked him.

Right on cue, Lenora arrived. "Andre! What are you doing? Are you even human for bullying your brother?"

I looked at her, then at Jerome, and chuckled. "The Hatfields are in the real estate business, not the theater. Where's all this performative innocence coming from?"

A loud smack rang out as Lenora slapped me hard across the face. "I won't let you talk about Jerome like that!"

As a sharp sting spread across my cheek, Lenora seemed to realize she had overreacted and stepped toward me, as if to apologize. But on the ground, Jerome suddenly broke into a fit of violent coughing.

"Lenora, I-I can't breathe…"

Right in public, she leaned in close and pressed her face against his.

The murmurs around us grew louder. "Aren't they the Hatfield brothers? They're embarrassingly fighting over a woman in public.

"That's especially the case for Andre. Lenora clearly has her eyes on another man, so why does he keep forcing the issue?"

Lenora glared at me with disgust. "You're shameless, Andre. Apologize to Jerome right now!"

"Me? Shameless and apologize? You two are openly flirting in public, so you're the ones without shame."

She sneered. "That was CPR. Honestly, how did I ever get entangled with such a petty, malicious man like you? That's so troublesome."

Her friends covered their mouths and snickered.

"This won't do, Mr. Hatfield. Lenora isn't some delicate flower. She's meant for bigger things, so some little acting is inevitable."

"If you can't even tolerate your brother today, how will you survive marriage?"

"It's fine. Mr. Hatfield knows how to keep a fish. His devotion could move the heavens."

Amid the mockery, Lenora stepped closer to me and whispered in a voice dripping with disdain, "Grandma will announce our engagement today. If you still want me to marry you, don't forget what I told you.

"After we're married, we'll live our own lives. Don't think about interfering in mine, much less controlling me."

I had no interest in saying anything else to Lenora and waved for someone to take her away.Thankfully, the wound wasn't deep. The wedding proceeded as planned after a few simple stitches.Later, I heard that once Lenora was sent back to the Bray residence, Emma flew into a rage. "Keep an eye on her! Unless absolutely necessary, she's not allowed to leave!"…That night, Raven and I shared a quiet smile after all the guests had left. Neither of us said a word. It was the kind of tacit understanding one would only see in lovers who had been in love for years.Later, as we lay intertwined, she softly asked, "Andre, aren't you going to ask if I can actually bear children?"My heart ached for her as I replied, "A woman doesn't exist just to carry on the bloodline, so that question is just pointless."That was when I realized that she had heard the ugly rumors too, so I added, "I love you, Rae. I'll always love you the way you are."She laughed softly. "The rumors are fake. Grandm

On the wedding day, I was up before dawn.I arrived at the church with friends and family, only to be stopped at the door by a swarm of bridesmaids who refused to let us in.After a few rounds of games, the bridesmaids finally relented."You can go in, Mr. Hatfield, but you have to answer one last question. Can you promise to love only Rae for the rest of your life?"Holding the bouquet, I smiled and probably looked foolishly happy. "Does that even need asking? I'll spend my life loving her. There won't be any work wives, confidantes, or soulmates—just her."If I ever break that vow, the Hatfield family will go bankrupt, and I'll end up sleeping on the streets."No one expected such a ruthless oath. The bridesmaids were instantly embarrassed and quickly ushered me inside. When I entered, Raven stood in the front center of the church in her wedding dress. She shot me a reproachful look and chided, "They were just joking. You didn't have to make such a harsh vow.""I won't ever b

When I returned home, I found Jerome standing on the balcony. He heard the door open and shot me an impatient glare."You're quite the strategist to use a woman's possessiveness to provoke Lenora, Andre. Too bad she doesn't care at all, so everything you've done is pointless."Besides, everyone knows that Raven is an orphan who can't bear children. Are you trying to wipe out the Hatfield family line?"I was about to respond when the housekeeper cried out, "Isn't that Ms. Bray? Andre, come quick and look!"I rushed to the window and saw Lenora across the street. She had stretched a long banner across the path outside our yard, captioned with the words, "I love you, Andre. Let's get married!" Balloons bobbed everywhere.Holding a microphone, she shouted my name at the top of her lungs, "Andre, come out! I know you're waiting for me, so I'm here!"A crowd had gathered to watch the spectacle, buzzing about the tangled drama between our families. Before I could say anything, Jerome

I smiled and said, "I don't know why Lenora would say that, Emma. I've always seen her as a younger sister, and she's always been close with my brother, Jerome. Everyone knows that she loves him, not me."Lenora's eyes flew wide. "I love you, Andre! Not Jerome!"Then, she burst out laughing. "I get it now! You're jealous and upset that I gave the watch to Jerome on your birthday, so you're using Raven to piss me off, aren't you?"I expressionlessly snapped back, "Stop it. Rae is the only woman I love."My words only seemed to push Lenora further over the edge. Her face twisted with rage as she lunged at me."You can't get engaged to anyone else. You can only marry and love me."Before she could reach me, Raven pulled me firmly to her side. "Today is Grandma's birthday, Lenora. I suggest you not turn this into a complete disaster. "Andre chose me."Lenora responded with a disdainful spat, "Who do you think you are to talk to me? You're an orphan with no parents—what right do yo

The main hall erupted in chaos. "Raven?""I thought Andre had always been obsessed with Lenora. How did it change into Raven?""Did someone make a mistake?"Even Lenora flushed with panic. "Was there a mistake, Grandma?"Emma shot her a stern look. "I may be old, but I won't make such a silly mistake."Diana chimed in, "Andre chose Raven in front of so many witnesses, so there's no mistake."But Lenora impatiently cut them off, saying, "Impossible! This can’t be right!"Then, she turned to me with eyes full of hope and cautiously asked, "There has to be a mistake, right, Andre? You chose me, and Grandma must've made a mistake."I gave a cold laugh. "There's no mistake—I chose Rae."Raven looked up and seemed surprised by the intimate address. Her eyes held a mix of joy and disbelief.Meanwhile, Lenora grabbed my arm in fury. "You love me! Everyone in the city knows that, so how could you choose her? Grandma must have made a mistake!"Diana quickly had her men escort Lenora

I stared at Lenora in disbelief and couldn't imagine how a wealthy heiress from a distinguished family could say something so absurd. She mistook my silence for acceptance and continued, "As long as you behave, I'll make sure not to embarrass you in public."She was utterly convinced that in this lifetime, I would only marry her.Just then, footsteps were heard from within the house. Emma's personal assistant, Diana Beltran, emerged and asked, "What's all this noise? It's a celebration, and you'll upset Mrs. Bray Senior."Raven was standing beside her. She was dressed in a mermaid-style gown with her hair elegantly pinned up to reveal her graceful collarbones. She looked completely different from the last time I had seen her.She walked past the crowd and stopped in front of me before asking, "Andre, are you okay?"Seeing her reminded me that in my past life, she was the only one who stayed by my deathbed and cried until her eyes were raw and red. After I died, she had gone nearl
