Chapter 3

作者: Snail
I handled the discharge procedures by myself, and as I walked out of the hospital, a long line of black luxury cars was parked at the entrance, and Mamma, Papa, and Cristiano, as well as a dozen or so bodyguards, were all gathered on the other side.

Nina was at the center of everyone's attention, closely guarded. Mamma was adjusting her scarf, Papa was holding the car door open for her, and Cristiano stood right by her side, listening patiently to whatever she was saying.

In the end, no one noticed that I had checked out of the hospital, and no one bothered to ask how I was feeling. I dragged my suitcase along and left the premises from the opposite side.

I returned to the estate, only to find that the entire place was deathly quiet. I walked into my bedroom and began packing up my belongings.

I noticed that my closet was filled with gowns Cristiano had sent over, and the jewelry case was filled with countless pieces. Tucked away at the very back was the first necklace he had ever given me.

I was 18 when I first accompanied him to a Famiglia banquet. Someone openly mocked me for being a nobody clinging to the Gallo Famiglia, and Cristiano had his men throw them out of the venue.

He fastened the necklace around my neck once we returned home and said, "I won't allow anyone to bully you as long as I'm by your side, Patrizia."

I couldn't say exactly when it started, but the person who once stood by my side gradually shifted to Nina's side.

There was also a diamond ring sitting in the case. It was the very one Cristiano had slid on my finger when he proposed to me.

It was three days ago when the skies over Norelia were ablaze with fireworks for a grand proposal witnessed by thousands. They all looked at me with envy, convinced that the role of the Gallo Famiglia's future Donna was rightfully mine.

However, I was the only one who knew the truth. I was forever fated to be one step short of that position.

In my past life, during my first wedding, Nina had a medical emergency, and Cristiano left me behind to rush to the hospital. Nina cried about feeling insecure during our second wedding, so Cristiano stayed by her side for the entire month.

It was the same pattern during my third and fourth weddings—until I eventually died in a hospital bed without ever becoming his bride.

It was then that my phone suddenly buzzed with a message from Nina. She sent a bunch of photos—one showed Cristiano kneeling on the beach to tie her shoelaces, and the others showed Cristiano cutting up her steak for her, draping a jacket over her, and even patiently getting her to take her medicine.

Cristiano was meticulous and gentle in every single frame. He was usually so distant and proud, yet he possessed such a gentle expression in those photos.

Nina sent another message right after. "Did you see that, Patrizia? I'm the one Cristiano actually loves. You know, all it takes is one word from me, and he'll call off the wedding. He will never marry you unless I allow it, Patrizia."

I stared at the screen for a long time without replying, knowing that Nina was completely right about the whole thing. In my past life, right up until the moment I died, the wedding that was meant to be mine never actually came.

I set my phone down gently and went back to packing my belongings.

It was the following day when I went to a law firm to sign the asset transfer agreement and close most of my personal accounts. I left for the airport early on the morning of the third day.

In the meantime, the entire Gallo Famiglia was bustling with activity. There were flowers blanketing the church at the wedding venue as guests arrived in succession, all of them waiting to see the future Donna of the Gallo Famiglia.

I stood in the international departure hall, staring at the ticket in my hand, while Professor Pellegrini waved at me from a short distance away. "Is all your paperwork done?"

I nodded in assent.

It was then that my phone rang—Cristiano was calling. I fell silent for a moment before answering. I could hear the ocean waves and Nina's faint laughter in the background.

Cristiano sounded exhausted as he said, "Nina suddenly had an episode last night, so I can't make it back for the time being, Patrizia. I'll have to postpone the wedding for a few days, so just sit tight and wait for me. I'll definitely make this up to you once I'm back."

In my past life, I stood entirely alone at the altar, enduring the judgmental stares of all the guests. That groomless wedding was a disaster, turning me into a total laughingstock in Norelia.

They didn't feel sorry for me, though. Mamma and Papa even scolded me for being dramatic. "It's only a postponed wedding. Nina's health is more important than a mere ceremony. You're being way too selfish, Patrizia!"

I felt grateful to leave everything behind early in this life. I simply murmured my agreement, hung up, and took out the SIM card. I snapped it in half, tossed it into a nearby trash can, and walked toward the boarding gate as it slowly opened. I pulled my suitcase and firmly walked away.

I wasn't going to stand around waiting in this life, nor was I going to look back again.

It was the same for Mamma and Papa, who constantly thought about me while I was living far away in another country. That night, they sat in front of the TV just as they always did, tuning in to my international interview.I looked confident, poised, and radiant on screen, speaking fluidly and carrying myself with great presence in front of the camera. It was then that the host asked, "Who is the very first person you'd like to thank, considering how successful you are right now, Dr. Luciani?"I pondered for a moment before I smiled and said, "I'd have to thank myself for being someone who constantly held on and never quit." Mamma's eyes were brimming with tears after hearing that. She then sighed softly, saying, "Patrizia has truly thrived since leaving us. She always suffered in silence back when she was at home, but now, she's finally living life on her own terms."Nina came downstairs, and seeing how much Mamma and Papa missed me, her expression instantly soured. She couldn't

Cristiano felt completely drained, as though all his strength had been stripped away. Nina's lies kept echoing in his mind along with those stacks of past medical records, weighing so heavily on his chest that he could barely breathe. He took out his phone and opened the photo album, where only a few photos of Patrizia were stored. He could see Patrizia smiling brightly and innocently in the photos, her eyes bright and pure. He stroked the screen lightly, his throat aching and tightening, as he murmured, "I'm so sorry, Patrizia. I had no idea all along that you were going through so many hardships. You suffered from such severe anemia, yet you never spoke up and constantly tolerated it in silence…"It was then that he suddenly recalled what Rafaelle Fontana, the doctor, had said during Patrizia's last blood transfusion. "Patrizia's health condition has deteriorated significantly, so continuing such frequent transfusions will seriously damage her health." He had completely dismiss

Cristiano's face was livid, his gaze piercingly cold. He then snarled in a tone betraying his uncontainable rage, "How could you be so malicious, Nina? Patrizia is your biological older sister!"Nina was frightened by the sudden outburst, causing her hand to shake and her phone to fall straight to the floor. She panicked and instinctively scrambled for an excuse; her triumphant smile vanished completely. "You've got it all wrong, Cristiano! I didn't mean any of that! You must have misheard me! I was just talking nonsense just now!"She wanted to lie her way out of it just like she used to, absolutely certain that everyone would still take her side just as they always had."You think I misheard you?" Cristiano stepped forward and grabbed her wrist in a tight grip. "You deliberately injured yourself, skipped your medication on purpose, faked being on your deathbed, and forced Patrizia to give you blood transfusions over and over again. Did I mishear all of that, Nina?""It's not li

Cristiano and the others were consumed by guilt ever since they discovered Patrizia's medical records, feeling completely overwhelmed by how much they owed her. Then, as time went on, Nina's birthday arrived.Sofia looked at the calendar on the wall, her thoughts still entirely consumed by Patrizia's disappearance. She then said, sighing, "Let's postpone your birthday party this year, Nina; after all, Patrizia is still nowhere to be found, and no one in this family is in the mood to celebrate at the moment."Upon hearing that, Nina instantly furrowed her brows, her face full of displeasure. She had waited a long time for her birthday and had been looking forward to it for ages; there was no way she could stand the thought of calling it off.She immediately grabbed Sofia's arm, her tone carrying a trace of grievance while saying, "My friends have already made plans and specifically cleared their schedules to celebrate with me, Mamma, so calling it off now would be incredibly humilia

In the meantime, days went by, and Patrizia's whereabouts remained a total mystery, with absolutely no news at all. There was an oppressive atmosphere that settled over the household as everyone silently agreed to avoid any mention of Patrizia, with no one bringing her up anymore. They gradually began to realize that the affection they had shown Patrizia was pitifully scarce as the days of her absence dragged on. They refused to face this guilt head-on, though, unwilling to acknowledge that it was their own indifference that had ultimately driven Patrizia away for good. That evening, Daniele, Sofia, and Nina gathered around the dining table for dinner. Sofia glanced at the empty chair where Patrizia used to sit, a heavy weight settling over her heart. She could no longer contain the worry she had kept buried for days, her eyes beginning to well up with tears. She said as tears streamed down her face, "It's been so long, yet there's still no news of Patrizia. She's all alone out the

Cristiano was completely taken aback after hearing Roberto's report. "W-What? Patrizia actually gave up her long-term residence status?"He snatched the documents from Roberto's hand, his eyes scanning the pages quickly as his face darkened by the second. He hastily pulled out his phone to try Patrizia's number again, but the call failed to connect just like before. His expression grew grim as a growing sense of dread took hold of him.He clenched the documents tightly and immediately barked out an order, "Go find out where Patrizia went!"Daniele, who was standing nearby, didn't care at all about where Patrizia had gone and actually felt bad for Cristiano. He stepped forward and patted Cristiano on the shoulder. "Patrizia is always causing problems for you. She's just acting out again because you took Nina out on a trip, so there's nothing to worry about. She'll be back in a couple of days."Sofia sighed. "Patrizia is really taking things too far now. Nina's health is poor, so s

[Third-Person POV]Cristiano stared down at his phone once the call was hung up, an unsettling feeling rising within him for reasons he couldn't explain.
