Sydney

It was fun watching Eric squirm in his chair.

He drove with both hands on the wheel, his posture stiff, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.

We were on our way to the orphanage.

It was almost laughable how the man who’d spent days avoiding the topic from the first time I asked, suddenly decided to play the dutiful husband once I stopped asking.

But I had insisted. He had run out of excuses.

“We won’t stay long,” he said at last, his voice perfectly measured. “It’s best if we don’t disrupt the children’s routine.”

“I only want to see the child you want to adopt,” I replied, keeping my tone mild. “It’s important to me.”

He nodded, though the muscle in his jaw twitched. I looked out the window, watching the city thin into open fields. The further we drove, the quieter the world became. Even the birds seemed to sense that something about this trip was wrong.

The orphanage appeared beyond a low hill, a squat building of pale brick framed by iron gates and overgrown ivy. It looked respe

SydneyMy phone buzzed again for the sixth time.I didn’t have to check the screen to know who it was. The ache behind my temples told me before the vibration even stopped. I let it buzz out on my nightstand, resisting the urge to hurl it into the closet.Bryce.He had been calling since morning. I hadn’t answered—not after last night. Not after what we did. Not when I could still feel his hands on my hips and his mouth on my skin. I thought I could pretend it didn’t matter. One night. A mistake. A release. But his voice kept echoing in my head. You’re mine.My hands shook as I closed my laptop and stood from the desk. I needed air and movement. Space to breathe. I shoved my phone in my purse without looking at the messages and headed downstairs.Only to freeze halfway into the kitchen. He was already here.Standing across from my father at the center island like this was his house and he’d been invited. Arms folded, face calm, voice low and steady in that way he had when he wanted co

SydneyBy the time I pulled into the Stanley Estate’s driveway, the sun was already high and the air felt too heavy to breathe. The house stood there like nothing in it ever went wrong.Except it did. Constantly. The front door swung open before I could reach for the handle.Eric stood there with his sleeves rolled up, tie hanging loose around his neck, and the picture of a man trying too hard to appear composed.“Where the hell have you been?” His voice was sharp enough to cut glass. “You’ve ignored every call. Every message.”I brushed past him without a word, setting my bag down on the console table. “I was out.”“Out?” He followed me into the foyer, footsteps echoing behind mine. “You disappear overnight, and all you have to say is out?”I stopped, turning just enough to meet his eyes. “Would you prefer a more creative answer?”He exhaled through his nose, his jaw tightening. “Don’t play games with me, Sydney. Not now. I had people calling, asking where you were. You humiliated me

SydneyWhat the hell was I thinking? The thought hit me before my eyes even opened. The air was too warm, the sheets too soft, and the arm draped lazily across my waist far too heavy to belong anywhere near me.I exhaled, slow and silent, before turning my head slightly, and there he was.Bryce Westin. Fast asleep beside me, chest rising and falling in that maddeningly calm rhythm like we hadn’t just dismantled every rule I’d set for myself. My body still ached from him. Every nerve felt alive and too aware. My skin carried the ghost of his touch, and my lips… God, my lips were still sore. One night. That was all it was supposed to be.But there was nothing one‑night about the way he’d said my name, or the way I still felt his breath at the back of my neck. Or the way he felt inside of me and took me like i was his and only his.He branded himself into me, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t too.I should have been disappointed with him, with myself. But the truth was worse. I wanted

SydneyIt was a flash of a black door and white tiles in the dim light of Bryce’s apartment when he pushed me against the wall and claimed my lips.My body responded to him instantly. His mouth moved over mine with a hunger that had waited far too long. Every brush of his lips, every sweep of his tongue, poured heat into my chest and down my spine, until I wasn’t sure if I was burning or just breaking apart in the best way possible. His hands were everywhere. Tracing every line, every curve, with deliberate pressure, like he’d mapped me in his mind already.I gasped when he gripped my hips and lifted me. My legs wrapped around his waist like it was instinct, like this wasn’t our first time crashing into each other with this kind of reckless desperation. He carried me inside, not once breaking the kiss as the door clicked shut behind us. The place was darker than I expected, but still sleek and minimal, like the man himself. Shadows clung to the corners, broken only by soft city light

SydneyThe conversation around the table faded. The warmth from his hand spread outward like ink in water, soaking into places I hadn’t realized were still starved. I gripped the edge of my napkin, trying to anchor myself to something—anything. My lips parted, breath quiet and shallow. I leaned back slightly, and he followed, trailing just high enough to make me forget how to think.“You look breathtaking tonight, Sydney,” he rasped as he leaned closer to my ear. “Black is definitely your colour.”I didn’t know how it was possible, but that seemed to turn me on even more.“Right, Sydney?” Kara’s voice shattered it, and I was flung back into reality by the insistence in her voice.“I’m sorry, what?” I said, shaking my head to clear the fuzziness, though Bryce didn’t stop.“My question,” she said, too-sweet and too-loud, “you agree with us, don’t you? About power needing to be earned, not inherited?”I blinked. “I believe power is kept by those who understand its cost.”Kara laughed. “A

SydneyEric had called it a last-minute business dinner—a gathering with key partners that he just had to attend. But from the moment I stepped into the marble-floored hall of the private dining suite and spotted Kara on his arm, all legs and lipstick and glittering entitlement, I was sick. The room was dimly lit, artfully decorated, and full of too many people who wore their ambition like perfume… It was heavy, choking and impossible to ignore. At the head of the long mahogany table sat Eric, self-appointed king of the evening. His right hand was draped casually over the back of Kara’s chair. His left, naturally, gestured toward the seat he’d saved for me. Right beside him.I took it without a word, my smile bland and social. My father was already seated across from us, deep in conversation with a steel-haired investor I didn’t recognize. And directly beside him—because fate had a sick sense of humor—was Bryce.I had to admit though that walking in and seeing him was a bit of a relie
