Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
A sizable crowd had already gathered downstairs outside Sycamore Block 2.

The security guards and the maintenance staff were standing in a row, along with the dorm supervisor, Sharon Bettany. None of them looked particularly pleased.

As soon as the door to Room 503 opened, a damp, sour smell hit us.

The windows were wide open. Half a cup of honey water, several pieces of rotten peach, and an open garbage bag sat on the windowsill. There was even a basin of standing water in the corner of the balcony.

Mosquitoes circled the light fixture, while a whole swarm buzzed in the corners.

Sharon's face turned ashen instantly. "Who did this?"

Nathan stood in the middle of the room as though everyone had misunderstood him. "They get hungry too. It doesn't matter if the fruit goes bad. The little creatures will eat it."

The maintenance worker tried his best to hold back his irritation. "Young man, this is a student dorm, not an insect observation room. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and rotting fruit attracts bugs too."

Nathan pouted and argued, "Sir, you're being so harsh. They'll get scared if they hear you."

Someone in the crowd laughed, while others spoke up for him.

"Isn't he being too much of a sissy? I get that some people practice mindfulness, but they don't take it this far."

"Maybe don't provoke him."

"There's nothing wrong with not killing living creatures, though."

The next moment, a mosquito landed on Sharon's arm. She lifted her other hand and smacked, killing it swiftly.

Nathan let out a scream. "You killed it!"

The entire floor went silent.

Sharon looked at the tiny smear of blood on her palm, her expression darkening. "Worry about yourself first."

Just then, my other two roommates from Room 503 came up the stairs. One was Oscar Clark, and the other was Zeke Murray.

Oscar's arms were covered in mosquito bites, and he was holding a torn mosquito net. "This is mine."

Zeke held his washbasin with a grim expression. "He wouldn't let us dump out that basin of water on the balcony. He said there might be insect eggs in it."

When Nathan saw them, he looked as though his rescuers had arrived. "Oscar, Zeke, please speak up for me."

Oscar hesitated.

Zeke glanced at me and lowered his voice. "Actually, Nathan's pretty pitiful. He's just too kind."

There it was again—Nathan was just too kind.

Every disaster started with those words.

Nathan's eyes immediately reddened. "Aiden, I really didn't know your reaction was this serious."

I exposed the rash on my arm. It had already spread from my wrist to my forearm, covering my skin densely.

Oscar got a fright as he asked in surprise, "You're really allergic?"

Nathan immediately choked up. "I thought you just didn't like that they were dirty."

The atmosphere instantly grew tense.

I stared at him and stated, "Being allergic isn't the same as thinking they're dirty."

Nathan shrank back, and his eyes held just the right amount of redness. "I was wrong, okay? You don't have to be so mean to me."

Zeke sighed and said, "Aiden, he already apologized."

Before I could say anything, a mosquito flew down from beside the light and landed on Nathan's neck. A security guard nearby instinctively raised his hand.

Nathan jerked backward and shouted, "Don't touch it!"

He crashed into the shoe rack behind the door. Dozens of pairs of shoes tumbled onto the floor. A white sneaker happened to fall straight into the basin of standing water.

The owner of the shoe immediately lost it. "Nathan!"

Hallie responded quickly, and the college issued a second official statement. It stated that Nathan had continued to approach a classmate with honey water and had thrown it at him despite knowing about his allergy, thereby creating public health and safety risks. It also stated that he had filmed classmates without their consent, stirred up online controversy, and privately sold a liquid containing unknown ingredients.Campus security also formally documented the incident and took action. The social media platform restricted Nathan's account, and every post involving me was taken down. And yet, Nathan still didn't stop.On the morning of the third day, I had just finished my introductory course when I saw another crowd gathered outside the academic building.Nathan stood in the middle of the crowd again. He wore a white shirt, and his hand was wrapped in gauze. He had the same sign that read "Apology" hung around his neck. There was no bucket of honey water beside him this time.

The disciplinary decision wasn't announced that day.Brandon and Priscilla took Nathan home. Maintenance made sure Room 503 was absolutely free of pests. My application to live off campus was finally approved. When Hallie handed me the temporary off-campus housing permit, she sighed. "Stay at home for the next few days. I'll push them to finish the rest of the paperwork."I took the permit. "Thank you, Ms. Zimmer."Hallie looked at the rashes on my arm that still hadn't faded and fell silent for a moment. "If something like this happens again, go to a faculty member immediately."I nodded. When I went to move my things, quite a few people had gathered outside Room 503.The people who had criticized me the day before were all quiet now. Some looked like they wanted to apologize but were too embarrassed to say anything.Oscar walked over carrying a cardboard box. "Aiden, let me help you move."I took the box from him. "No need."His face became flushed as he said, "I shouldn't

The surveillance camera outside the academic building had captured everything clearly. Nathan picked up the bucket, approached me, and raised his arm. His movements were so fluid that there was no room for misunderstanding. This time, no one tried to make excuses for him. Someone even called the police on the spot. The campus clinic examined me and confirmed that I hadn't come into direct contact with a large amount of the allergen. I only had mild chest tightness.Hallie's coat was soaked with honey water. It filled the office with a sickeningly sweet smell. She sat in her chair, her expression icy and stern. "Nathan, this has gone beyond losing control of your emotions. You knew he was allergic, yet you continued approaching him and threw mosquito-attracting liquid at him."Nathan stood across from her, his lips trembling uncontrollably. "I wasn't trying to hurt him."The police officer looked at his notes. "Did you know he was allergic?"Nathan lowered his head. "Yes.""And

That afternoon, the college issued a statement about the situation.Without naming anyone, it stated that a student had placed rotten fruit, honey water, and standing water in a dorm room while preventing others from taking normal mosquito-control measures. It also stated that he secretly filmed classmates, which sparked an online controversy.Campus security ordered the relevant videos to be taken down. The platform restricted Nathan's account, and all the posts involving me disappeared.Nevertheless, he didn't stop. Before class that afternoon, a crowd had gathered outside the academic building.Nathan stood right in the middle. He wore a white shirt, and his hand was wrapped in gauze. A small sign hung around his neck.It read, "Apology."The moment he saw me, tears swam in his eyes. "Aiden, I came to apologize to you."The crowd immediately parted to make way.I stopped on the steps.Nathan bowed to me and said, "I'm sorry for stopping you from putting up a mosquito net.

The next morning, I had a checkup at the campus clinic. The doctor looked at the rashes on my arm and asked what had happened the night before. His frown gradually deepened as he listened. The doctor said, "With your condition, you need to avoid environments where mosquitoes gather. If you continue to be exposed to them, you could have a more severe allergic reaction."He issued a written medical recommendation.I took a photo and sent it to Hallie. She replied almost immediately, "Got it. Keep the original."As soon as I walked out of the campus clinic, I saw that the confession page had been updated again.Nathan had posted a new video. He sat on the edge of his dorm bed with gauze wrapped around his finger. He also had reddened eyes."On my very first day of college, I realized how cruel this world is to tiny lives. Some people say I'm pretending to be a saint, but I just can't bear to see them die. If being kind is wrong, then I really don't know what I'm supposed to do."A

The lights in the dorm building came on one after another. Doors opened, heads poked out, and phones were raised.Nathan sat on the floor sobbing, the hem of his clothes stained with honey water. He looked as though he had suffered some terrible injustice. He whined, "I just wanted him to understand the value of life. Why did he have to be so aggressive?"Oscar stood beside him, his lips pale. "Aiden, you did push him away just now."I looked at him and stated, "He brought honey water near me. I'm allergic."Oscar's voice grew quieter as he argued, "But it was just honey water.""Honey water attracts mosquitoes. You know that," I said.Zeke, who had also been woken by the commotion, rushed over immediately. When he saw the broken glass on the floor, his first instinct was to help Nathan up."Are you hurt?" he asked.Nathan immediately held out his hand. There was a tiny red cut on his fingertip."It hurts," he replied pitifully. In my previous life, this was also the night w
