Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
In the end, the dorm room didn't immediately return to normal.

Maintenance said they needed to arrange pest control. However, Nathan blocked the doorway and refused to let them in, saying extermination was a massacre.

Sharon ordered him to clean up the rotten fruit and standing water first.

Nathan clutched the bag of rotten peaches as though he were holding the last bit of tenderness left in the world.

"They're still eating," he said softly.

Someone handed him a tissue.

Meanwhile, one of the other students recorded a video, while another made a post on the campus confession page.

The title of the post spread rapidly on the internet.

It read, "Kindhearted Freshman Protects Tiny Lives, Reduced to Tears by Cold-Blooded Roommate."

In the photo, Nathan was clutching the rotten peaches with reddened eyes while I stood beside him. My rolled-up sleeve made it look like I was pointing at him accusingly.

The comments section was boiling over.

"That roommate looks so aggressive."

"Not letting anyone kill mosquitoes is definitely ridiculous. Still, his heart's in the right place, isn't it?"

"Does having an allergy mean you don't need to have any empathy?"

"They're just a few mosquitoes. Why can't he be a little more tolerant?"

When Oscar handed me his phone, he had an awkward look on his face. "Aiden, do you want to explain yourself?"

As I stared at the photo, I felt a heavy weight pressing on my chest.

In my previous life, I had explained. I'd posted photos of the rashes covering my hands, my medical records from the campus clinic, as well as the honey water and rotten fruit Nathan had left on the windowsill.

No one had cared. All they had remembered was how pitiful Nathan looked.

Hallie arranged for me to stay in the college conference room temporarily.

She said, "You'll have to make do here tonight. I'll push them to approve your application to live off campus first thing tomorrow morning."

There was no bed in the conference room. I pushed two chairs together and slept on them, but they were so hard that my back ached.

Outside the window, Nathan was still downstairs outside the dorm building, looking aggrieved. Zeke draped a jacket over his shoulders, while Oscar brought him some hot water.

A while later, someone downstairs shouted my name. "Aiden!"

I walked over to the window.

Nathan looked up at me, his tears glistening under the streetlights. "I'm willing to take care of them with you. Please don't be angry anymore, okay?"

The crowd downstairs immediately started egging me on.

"He's giving you a way out. Just come down."

"He's already gone this far, and you're still acting all high and mighty?"

"Don't be so heartless to your classmates."

I closed the window.

My phone kept vibrating nonstop. Someone had posted a screenshot of the confession page in the class group chat.

Hallie told everyone not to share it, and several sarcastic messages immediately followed.

"Some people sure know how to run to the teacher the second they start college."

"We're all going to be in the same class. We'll be seeing each other every day."

"Is respecting life wrong now?"

I saved screenshots of the group chat.

At 1:00 am, someone knocked on the conference room door.

Oscar stood outside, his face a little pale. "Aiden, Nathan said the mosquitoes keep flying around the dorm, and he can't sleep either."

I looked at him. "So?"

Oscar bit his lip and went on, "He said if you go back, we can all sit down and talk things through. Otherwise, he won't be able to rest easy tonight."

"Why should I care if he can rest easy or not?" I questioned.

Oscar froze. "He just wants to make peace with you."

"I don't accept it," I said firmly.

Suddenly, Nathan came running down the hall. He was holding a glass jar filled with pale yellow honey water.

"Aiden, smell this!" he urged.

The cloyingly sweet scent hit my nose. I immediately backed away.

Nathan held up the jar, his eyes reddening again. "This is the food I prepared for them. If you smell it, you'll understand how much they really need us."

My throat started to itch.

Oscar panicked and said, "Nathan, don't get too close to him."

Nathan took another step forward like he hadn't heard him at all. The mouth of the jar was almost pressed against my chest.

"I'm begging you. Please accept them."

I shoved his wrist away.

The glass jar crashed to the floor. Honey water splashed all over the hallway.

Nathan fell to the floor, and his scream rang out through the entire floor. "You knocked over their food!"

He held up a finger cut by a shard of glass and exclaimed dramatically, "He's trying to kill me! Help!"

Hallie responded quickly, and the college issued a second official statement. It stated that Nathan had continued to approach a classmate with honey water and had thrown it at him despite knowing about his allergy, thereby creating public health and safety risks. It also stated that he had filmed classmates without their consent, stirred up online controversy, and privately sold a liquid containing unknown ingredients.Campus security also formally documented the incident and took action. The social media platform restricted Nathan's account, and every post involving me was taken down. And yet, Nathan still didn't stop.On the morning of the third day, I had just finished my introductory course when I saw another crowd gathered outside the academic building.Nathan stood in the middle of the crowd again. He wore a white shirt, and his hand was wrapped in gauze. He had the same sign that read "Apology" hung around his neck. There was no bucket of honey water beside him this time.

The disciplinary decision wasn't announced that day.Brandon and Priscilla took Nathan home. Maintenance made sure Room 503 was absolutely free of pests. My application to live off campus was finally approved. When Hallie handed me the temporary off-campus housing permit, she sighed. "Stay at home for the next few days. I'll push them to finish the rest of the paperwork."I took the permit. "Thank you, Ms. Zimmer."Hallie looked at the rashes on my arm that still hadn't faded and fell silent for a moment. "If something like this happens again, go to a faculty member immediately."I nodded. When I went to move my things, quite a few people had gathered outside Room 503.The people who had criticized me the day before were all quiet now. Some looked like they wanted to apologize but were too embarrassed to say anything.Oscar walked over carrying a cardboard box. "Aiden, let me help you move."I took the box from him. "No need."His face became flushed as he said, "I shouldn't

The surveillance camera outside the academic building had captured everything clearly. Nathan picked up the bucket, approached me, and raised his arm. His movements were so fluid that there was no room for misunderstanding. This time, no one tried to make excuses for him. Someone even called the police on the spot. The campus clinic examined me and confirmed that I hadn't come into direct contact with a large amount of the allergen. I only had mild chest tightness.Hallie's coat was soaked with honey water. It filled the office with a sickeningly sweet smell. She sat in her chair, her expression icy and stern. "Nathan, this has gone beyond losing control of your emotions. You knew he was allergic, yet you continued approaching him and threw mosquito-attracting liquid at him."Nathan stood across from her, his lips trembling uncontrollably. "I wasn't trying to hurt him."The police officer looked at his notes. "Did you know he was allergic?"Nathan lowered his head. "Yes.""And

That afternoon, the college issued a statement about the situation.Without naming anyone, it stated that a student had placed rotten fruit, honey water, and standing water in a dorm room while preventing others from taking normal mosquito-control measures. It also stated that he secretly filmed classmates, which sparked an online controversy.Campus security ordered the relevant videos to be taken down. The platform restricted Nathan's account, and all the posts involving me disappeared.Nevertheless, he didn't stop. Before class that afternoon, a crowd had gathered outside the academic building.Nathan stood right in the middle. He wore a white shirt, and his hand was wrapped in gauze. A small sign hung around his neck.It read, "Apology."The moment he saw me, tears swam in his eyes. "Aiden, I came to apologize to you."The crowd immediately parted to make way.I stopped on the steps.Nathan bowed to me and said, "I'm sorry for stopping you from putting up a mosquito net.

The next morning, I had a checkup at the campus clinic. The doctor looked at the rashes on my arm and asked what had happened the night before. His frown gradually deepened as he listened. The doctor said, "With your condition, you need to avoid environments where mosquitoes gather. If you continue to be exposed to them, you could have a more severe allergic reaction."He issued a written medical recommendation.I took a photo and sent it to Hallie. She replied almost immediately, "Got it. Keep the original."As soon as I walked out of the campus clinic, I saw that the confession page had been updated again.Nathan had posted a new video. He sat on the edge of his dorm bed with gauze wrapped around his finger. He also had reddened eyes."On my very first day of college, I realized how cruel this world is to tiny lives. Some people say I'm pretending to be a saint, but I just can't bear to see them die. If being kind is wrong, then I really don't know what I'm supposed to do."A

The lights in the dorm building came on one after another. Doors opened, heads poked out, and phones were raised.Nathan sat on the floor sobbing, the hem of his clothes stained with honey water. He looked as though he had suffered some terrible injustice. He whined, "I just wanted him to understand the value of life. Why did he have to be so aggressive?"Oscar stood beside him, his lips pale. "Aiden, you did push him away just now."I looked at him and stated, "He brought honey water near me. I'm allergic."Oscar's voice grew quieter as he argued, "But it was just honey water.""Honey water attracts mosquitoes. You know that," I said.Zeke, who had also been woken by the commotion, rushed over immediately. When he saw the broken glass on the floor, his first instinct was to help Nathan up."Are you hurt?" he asked.Nathan immediately held out his hand. There was a tiny red cut on his fingertip."It hurts," he replied pitifully. In my previous life, this was also the night w
