Chapter 2

作者: Watermelon
Having heard my instructions, the surgical team and nurses quickly pushed Logan and Yvonne into the OR.

Logan, seeing my calm and professional demeanor, seemed much more at ease than earlier—until I brought out the medical camera.

In my past life, the surveillance footage had been tampered with, so I wasn't going to take that chance again. I directed the nurse to photograph them from every angle.

Logan yanked the bedsheet over himself and snapped, "What the hell do you think you're doing? How can you take photos in the OR? You're violating our privacy!"

I hid a cold smirk behind my mask and stated calmly, "It's part of the procedure, as a thorough photographic record of your bodies' points of articulation is required before our specialists can be consulted and a surgical plan properly formulated.

"If you'd rather not consent, that's your right—but we'd have to refer you to another hospital."

I put away the camera after saying that and turned to leave.

"Hold on!" Yvonne called out in a panic when she saw me turning away. She was pinned under Logan's weight in a humiliating position, and her knees were already buckling. She wasn't in any condition to deal with the hassle of switching hospitals.

She then twisted her head toward Logan with a wretched, imploring look, her eyes turning completely bloodshot. "I'm in so much pain, darling, so please just let her take the photos. Other hospitals would probably do the same thing anyway!"

"I won't allow it! If those photos get out—my reputation, my family, my marriage—everything I have would be destroyed!"

I couldn't help but sneer inwardly, thinking that it was only at this moment that he recalled his marriage and family. I simply turned to the nurse and said indifferently, "Get in touch with another hospital's ER."

"You can't do that!" Yvonne was clearly in significant distress. She continued to reason with Logan with tears in her eyes, yelling, "It's our top priority to get separated this instant, Logan. Otherwise, if we wait until tomorrow and Mariella catches us when she comes in for work, it'll be a total nightmare!"

Upon hearing my name, Logan's expression suddenly shifted, tinged with panic and guilt. He gave up his resistance, merely offering a harsh threat. "You ought to know that I'm the CEO of Lane Group. If these photos ever leak and damage my relationship with my wife, I'll personally see to it that every one of you ceases to exist in this city!"

In that instant, the nurse discreetly rolled her eyes and murmured under her breath, "He shouldn't be having an affair if he really cares so much about his marriage, then. He's doing all this crazy stuff with a mistress, yet he still wants to act like a loyal husband. How ridiculous."

I concurred with the nurse, but I maintained my composure and continued setting up my surgical instruments.

It was then that the nurse taking the photos suddenly gasped, staring at the tattoo on Logan's inner thigh. "Mariella? That's the exact same name as one of the doctors here in our ER."

I noted that the nurse assigned to the procedure was from another department. I had never met her before, which explained why she didn't recognize my face but knew my name.

I caught the look of pure panic on Logan's face, finding it almost incredulous. He had once told me I was his one true love and tattooed my name near his groin. He was in so much pain then, since it had been an excruciatingly sensitive area.

He had broken out in a cold sweat as he murmured against my ear back then, caught between agony and pleasure. "I just want you to know that this is the proof of my devotion, my beloved Mariella. No other woman will ever lay eyes on it."

I had once regarded the tattoo as Logan's solemn vow, a personalized declaration of affection dedicated to me. It was now ironically bared to the world—a silent witness to Logan's unfaithfulness and his ultimate betrayal.

"Damn it! I'm not doing the surgery here! I'm going to transfer to another hospital!" Logan snapped, grunting and writhing in agitation.

Yvonne, who was trapped underneath him, wept from the sheer torture of it. "P-Please don't move!"

Yvonne, driven by pain, spun a lie on the spot. "It's fine, darling! I'm sure there are plenty of Mariellas out there. It's just a coincidence that your mother shares it with a doctor here, so don't let it get to you!"

In the end, the nurse looked toward me, seemingly seeking my take on the situation; after all, as an ER colleague, she figured I knew Mariella well enough to confirm or deny the coincidence.

I stated coldly, "It's honestly not that big of a deal. Regardless of a patient's circumstances, maintaining their privacy is part of our professional code of conduct."

Logan's worries vanished after hearing that. He breathed a sigh of relief and mocked the nurse, yelling, "That doctor is absolutely right! You need to study up on professional conduct. Hold on!"

He suddenly fixed his gaze on me mid-sentence, his expression shifting slightly. He searched my features with a look of growing suspicion, his lips trembling as he tried to find the words. He eventually whispered, "W-Why do you sound exactly like Mariella?"

Mariella's Point-of-ViewIn a serene study of a hillside manor across the city, sunlight filtered through the tall windows. I stood by the window, watching Papa carefully prune the roses in the garden, while Stefano stood silently behind me.I gradually recovered under the meticulous care of the top medical team, and the cut on my lower abdomen had healed, leaving just a faint mark that would gradually fade over time."These just came in, Ms. Lombardi," Stefano said as he placed the documents on the desk. They were the official confirmation of Lane Group's bankruptcy and liquidation, along with briefings on Yvonne's death from her injuries and Logan's sentence to life in prison.I looked over the documents, my demeanor composed. "Thank you for all these years, Stefano."There was a brief stillness behind me before Stefano spoke up. "I did all of these because it's my duty—and it's something I'm willing to do on my end."It was then that someone gently knocked and opened the door.

Logan's Point-of-ViewLogan was tied up in a chair, while Stefano stood before him, his expression frigid."You'd better let me go this instant! You're committing an abduction! I'll call the police on you! It appears that Mariella—that bitch—has indeed conspired with her lover!" Logan yelled, thrashing against his restraints.Stefano stepped forward and kicked him squarely in the chest.Logan toppled over with the chair, but a wicked look of triumph crossed his face. "You're already too late! Your unborn child with Mariella is already gone!"It was then that the sound of heavy footsteps echoed from deep within the warehouse, and a dignified, gray-haired man appeared. He glanced at Logan, as if he were regarding trash, before asking Stefano, "Is this the piece of filth who harmed my daughter, Stefano?"Stefano nodded and replied, "Yes, Don Lombardi."Logan's pupils dilated with sudden terror. He recognized the middle-aged man before him. He was none other than the Don of the Lo

It was a house arrest, but I could move freely within the villa, provided that I didn't go outside. Logan would return daily with a jubilant expression, enthusiastically designing the nursery.I never responded to him, merely gazing out the window. Logan attributed my silence to a fit of pique and remained indifferent.I suddenly heard the sound of items being destroyed downstairs one afternoon, followed by Logan's roar. "Damn it! How dare they! Lombardi Group has been our primary partner for ten years now! How could they just terminate our cooperation without any warning? Go find out who's responsible for it this instant!"I then heard the sound of hurried footsteps going back and forth. In the end, a somber atmosphere pervaded the villa throughout the afternoon. It wasn't until Logan stormed out and slammed the door behind him that the household staff finally felt a sense of reprieve.…Logan's Point-of-ViewLogan paced his office in a blind rage. I opened my eyes and realized that I was lying in bed. I jolted upright, only to find my body covered in suggestive marks. I was overcome by a sense of revulsion as I hurried to the bathroom to retch. It was then that the door opened. Logan leaned against the doorway, wearing a robe and holding a glass of water. He looked relaxed and satisfied, bearing the look of someone who had gotten exactly what they wanted. "You're finally up, Mariella. How are you feeling?""What did you do to me?"Logan cocked his brow, as if entertained by the question. "You want to know what I did, huh? You and I are married, Mariella, so it's only natural for a husband to love his wife." "You raped me!" I grabbed the drinking glass off the counter and hurled it at him.He stepped aside, effortlessly dodging it. He then chuckled softly as he gripped my chin, saying, "You ought to know that's just a marital obligation in the eyes of the law, Mariella. You can go ahead and try to report it. I'd like to see

Logan's Point-of-ViewIt wasn't long before an enraged Logan stormed into the hospital director's office, demanding that Mariella be fired, only for the hospital director to inform him, "Dr. Lazzari handed in her resignation earlier today, Mr. Lane."Logan's anger instantly subsided, thinking that it was good that Mariella had resigned. He recalled her saying that her ultimate goal was a life of idle luxury as a socialite wife. He assumed that because the conflict had escalated so severely, Mariella had become intimidated and was resigning as a gesture of submission. He approved of this newfound pragmatism. He could practically envision me dejected and repentant, a flicker of satisfaction rising within him. He mused that it would have been better if Mariella had done so sooner. He adjusted his tie, intending to return and accept Mariella's repentance. He believed, after all, that he had consistently treated Mariella with great indulgence. It was then that the hospital director sud

In the days that followed, Logan played the part of the penitent. He sent me expensive gifts every day, aiming to settle my temper.I didn't accept any of them, though. I remained indifferent as the gifts stacked up.Logan's displays of sincerity grew. He no longer just sent gifts and flowers to my office; he sent them to my colleagues, the doctors, nurses, and even the janitors. In that instant, the stares from those around me turned from pity to envy, then finally to words of advice."Mr. Lane is so considerate.""It is normal for men to make mistakes from time to time.""What more do you want from a man who is rich and is willing to humble himself before you, Dr. Lazzari?" There were several nurses eating the pastries Logan sent, and one of them even said, "You ought to know that forgiveness is a virtue in marriage, Dr. Lazzari. He is, after all, a successful and generous man."I remained expressionless, dumping the flowers into the medical waste bin and returning the unop
