Hope

After the gathering, I slip past the remaining pack. Keith is gone. Jace is speaking low with Papa. I stand alone in the clearing.

I should feel peace. They did the right thing. But I’m restless, unsettled.

I close my eyes. I feel him—Keith—like a memory I can’t reach. His absence is heavier than his presence.

What did he want, really? Didn’t stick around. I never knew him to give up easily. Maybe he thought his part was done. Or maybe… maybe not.

A gust of warm wind moves the leaves.

With a steadying breath, I walk towards home.

“Hope,” Emma’s voice calls, and it anchors me in place.

I turn and see her eyes are fixed on me, bright and searching, as she closes the distance between us.

Her hand reaches, hesitates, then grips my arm. “There you are. I almost thought I had to go all the way to the main house to catch you.”

“I’m here,” I whisper.

Emma brushes a strand of hair from my face. “You okay?”

I draw in a breath. “I’m…” My voice trembles more than I expected. “I’m okay.”

  • Reborn Luna   30. Royal ball

KeithAn envelope sits on the table, the king’s seal glaring back at us. Thick parchment, formal as death, but it smells like opportunity. Clinton reads it aloud, voice calm but I can hear the edge of excitement.“A royal ball,” he says, lifting his eyes. “In the capital.”Hope’s eyes widen, and for a moment I can sense a small flicker of fear.Tessa grins.Ben stays silent, though I catch the twitch at the corner of his mouth.I lean back in my chair, arms crossed.“A celebration,” Clinton continues, “what a perfect excuse for a visit.”“The goddess shines down on us,” I agree.I called my father yesterday to fill him in on the changes happening here and to ask him to continue to look over the pack.He was thrilled when I told him I found my mate and encouraged me to secure her before coming home.“We all know what this really is.” Tessa says. “The prince is looking for his mate.”“Yes but that will give us the perfect opportunity to show ourselves in front of the King without all th

HopeI stand in front of Keith’s door, heart pounding so loud I’m certain it echoes down the hallway. For a full minute, I just stare at the wood grain, biting the inside of my cheek, trying to convince myself to raise my hand and knock. It’s been a day since I’ve seen him—twenty-four hours of silence, of cold distance, of regretting every word I never said.I ball my hand into a fist and knock twice before I can talk myself out of it.Nothing.I shift from foot to foot. Maybe he’s not here. Maybe this is a mistake. Maybe he doesn’t want to see me. Hell, why would he?After how much I denied our bond I’d be surprised if he never wanted to see me again.Just as I’m about to turn and leave, the door creaks open.Keith stands there, one hand on the knob, eyes guarded. He doesn’t say anything at first. He looks… tired. Not physically, but worn out. Like he's been wrestling something inside his chest for too long. His nostrils flare when he focuses on me.“Hey,” I manage, my voice quieter

  • Reborn Luna   28.Social creatures

HopeI step onto the training field just after dawn. Dew chills the grass under the soles of my shoes. The sky is pale, pink‑etched, and I spot Tessa already stretching near the stone markers.Morning light glints off her hair as she moves into her warm‑up routine—high kicks, twisting lunges, rolls.I want to play, my wolf whines. It has been a while since we ran with our sister hasn't it?Yes too long, my wolf says. Not today but soon, I promise we will.Wolves are social creatures and in order to keep them happy and healthy, pack runs were nokey.I approach quietly, boots silent on soft earth, watching as worry knots at her posture, tight shoulders, her eyes flicker ahead, unsettled.“Early start today, huh?” I ask, stepping closer. My breath puffs in the cold air.She keeps stretching, just slows it. “Yeah.” She rolls her neck. “I figured I’d kill time until Papa came.”I arch a brow, folding my arms. “Kill time—or bury worry?” I give her a pointed look. She breathes out, and final

HopeI can see the confusion flashing across his face. I know he thought that this was the moment you would reconcile, that I would give him the chance that he was hoping for. I thought I would too. But I can't.“What's wrong?” He asks not daring to breach the space between.“I shouldn't have let you think— this was a mistake. It was all just….”Panic flares and his eyes and his likings round black pupils flash.“No. No, tell me what's wrong. What just happened back there?”I inhale. My purpose firmly back in place. “I think it's time that we close the door. Formally.”My voice falters. I nearly laugh at the sheer and possibility of it all. This was a video I was ready to have pups with. Now his face only serves as a reminder of the nightmare I lived through. He flinches, like I’ve stabbed him. My mouth goes dry. I brace for the end. He’s so close the ones of his skin brushes against mine. He stares at me shocked, lost and for a moment I feel as though every decision I'm about to make

  • Reborn Luna   25.Second chance

HopeI creep inside the pack house just after midnight. I just finished getting Leon settled in the warriors barracks. Though he was suspicious of my intent at first, he seemed to settle in fine. I would have to check on him in the morning and take him to Emma for a follow-up.The door clicks shut behind me. My skin tingles with the night’s lingering warmth, and the scent of summer jasmine drifts through the cracked window. I drop my keys in the dish by the door doing my best to keep the jingling to a minimum.Exhaustion threads through my bones like slow poison. Today was long and tomorrow will be longer because I have to convince my father to accept a loner into our past. Not that I believe my father would send a young, vulnerable juvenile away, but I'm more concerned with how it will look to Leon. After the trauma he's experienced, any negative energy towards him staying here will likely make him want to run for the hills.I make for my bedroom, hoping to get at least 6 hours of sl
