Chapter 4: A Face I've Never Seen Before

The photograph just sits there on the blanket. I make myself pick it up, my hand not quite steady, and I hate that, hate that this body keeps giving away what I feel before I've decided to feel it.

It's me. Or it's Rowan, before I was in here wearing him. Same face, dark hair pushed back, standing in some hallway with white columns and a window behind him letting in flat gray light, the kind you get right before evening turns into something else. A man's hand rests on his waist. Low. Easy. Like it's done that before.

I don't know the man's face. Never seen it. Not in this life, not in the one before it, and there's something almost funny about that in a sick sort of way — I'm being accused of a betrayal I can't even picture well enough to argue against.

"I don't know him," I say.

"Of course you don't."

"I'm serious. I've never seen this man."

He laughs, if you can call it that. Just air through his teeth. "You're holding a photo of yourself with him. Taken three weeks before our wedding. Two floors below where we're standing right now. And you want me to believe you don't know him."

"This morning I didn't know your name either. Didn't recognize this room. Didn't recognize my own hands, Caius." Saying it out loud sounds insane even to me. "So yes. I don't know him. I understand exactly how that sounds. It's still true."

Something flickers in his face. Not belief. Not yet. But a hesitation, a hairline crack where a second ago there was nothing but certainty.

Iris has gone quiet in the corner, watching like she isn't sure she's allowed to have an opinion in this room.

"Where'd you get it," I ask.

"Doesn't matter."

"It matters to me. Somebody followed me. Photographed me. Close enough to catch that." I put the picture down, face up, because I can't keep looking at it, at this stranger's hand on a waist that's mine now whether I asked for it or not. "Who sends you photos of your own husband? Who does that, Caius?"

He doesn't answer. Which tells me plenty on its own.

"Someone who wants this marriage gone," I say, working it out as the words come. "Someone who wins if you throw me out. If there's a scandal. If the kid turns out to be someone else's."

"Careful," he says. Low.

"I'm not trying to be clever. I'm saying what's obvious." I look at him properly now, past the anger, trying to find whatever's underneath it. "Somebody wanted you to see this today. Not last week. Today. Same morning a doctor tells you the dates are wrong. That's not bad luck. That's timing."

He stares at me a beat too long, and something raw moves across his face, something that looks almost like he wants to believe me and hates that he wants it.

"Marcus was already here," Iris says, quiet, from her corner. We both turn. "Before you came in. He knew about the pregnancy before we told anyone."

Caius's jaw tightens. "He was here."

"Let himself in. Rowan told him eleven weeks before I could stop it."

"You told him."

"I wasn't thinking straight." True. No version of this makes it sound better, so I don't try. "He walked in already acting like something was wrong, and I said too much. I know."

Caius drags a hand down his face and for the first time since I woke up he looks less like ice and more like a man who hasn't slept properly in longer than this morning, carrying something heavy long before I ever opened my eyes in this body.

"He's had this a while," he says, mostly to himself, turning the photograph over like it might say something different on the back. "Sitting on it. Waiting for the moment that hurts most."

"Why today, then?"

"Because today gives him two things instead of one." He looks up. "A pregnancy the timeline can't explain. A man in a photo he can point at. He doesn't need proof, Rowan. He just needs people wondering."

"Then find out who the man is." I fold my arms, more to have something to do with them than anything else. "If it's not what it looks like there's an answer somewhere. People don't just vanish. Somebody knows his name."

"You think I haven't tried."

"I think you've tried to catch me lying. Not the same as trying to find the truth." My voice comes out sharper than planned, and I let it stay that way. "You've spent this whole morning deciding what I am before you asked me one real question. So ask. Ask something you actually want an answer to."

He looks at me a long moment. Long enough that Iris shifts her weight, uncomfortable, the way you do standing too near something private.

"Fine," he says. "Who is he."

"I don't know."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I've got." I hold his eyes, don't look away first, because something tells me that matters with this man, that he reads every flinch like a confession. "I'm telling you the truth. I don't know his name. I don't remember that hallway. I don't remember marrying you, or humiliating your mother, or any single thing you think I did. I woke up in the middle of somebody else's disaster this morning and I'm trying badly to survive it."

Quiet, except the ultrasound machine humming itself down on the side table.

Then footsteps out in the hall. Fast. Too fast for staff, too loud for someone just passing.

The door bangs open before either of us can react. Garrison Caius's steward, I've picked that much up by now stands there out of breath, tie crooked, and something close to panic on a face I'd bet doesn't usually show much of anything.

"My lord." His eyes go past Caius, straight to me, and whatever he's about to say, he clearly wishes it wasn't in this room. "The man from the photograph. He's downstairs. Asking for Rowan. By name."

"Let me see them, or I start cutting."Marcus's voice carries clear and cold across the citadel courtyard, and the sight waiting for us when we arrive stops my heart cold in my chest. Nadia kneels in the torchlight, hands bound, a blade pressed flat against her throat, Iris beside her in the same condition, both women pale but defiant despite the danger."Let them go," Caius says, stepping forward, every line of him coiled tight enough to shatter."Not until Rowan steps closer." Marcus's eyes find me over Nadia's shoulder, something manic burning behind the usual polished calm. "I want him to see this properly. I want him to understand exactly what he's cost me tonight.""I've cost you nothing," I say, forcing steadiness into my voice despite the way my whole body wants to shake. "You did this to yourself, Marcus. Every choice, every lie, every drop of poison.""I did what needed doing." His grip tightens on the blade, and Nadia's breath catches audibly. "I was meant to inherit this H

"We're going now."Caius is already reaching for a cloak, voice brooking no argument, and I'm on my feet before Iris can object, adrenaline burning through the exhaustion that had tried to claim me a moment ago."Absolutely not." Iris steps directly into his path, arms crossed, every inch the physician refusing to be overruled. "He's been poisoned for hours, my lord. He needs rest, fluids, monitoring. A midnight ride to a crypt is the last thing either of them need.""My mother may be standing over my dead husband's grave right now, conspiring with the man who's been trying to kill my unborn child," Caius says, low and furious. "I am not leaving that unanswered until morning.""Then go. I'm coming with you." I meet Iris's eyes before she can argue. "I'm not sitting here wondering what you find while my own fate gets decided somewhere I can't see it.""Rowan—""I've survived worse than a carriage ride tonight," I say. "Let me survive this too, on my own feet, not locked in a room waiti

"Lock every door in this wing. Now."Caius's voice cracks through the infirmary like a whip, and the guard is gone before the echo fades, boots pounding down the corridor to relay the order. I watch him crush Marcus's note in his fist, and for the first time all night I see something close to panic breaking through the composure he's worn like armor since this morning."A face you trust completely," I repeat. "That could mean anyone.""That's the point." He drags a hand down his face. "Garrison. Iris. Nadia. My own mother. He's chosen his words to make me suspect every person I'd normally turn to for help.""Or," I say slowly, "he's chosen them because one specific person actually deserves the suspicion, and the vagueness is meant to drown that name in noise."Caius goes still, turning the idea over. "You think there's a real name hiding inside the threat.""I think a man clever enough to drug someone slowly enough to avoid detection doesn't waste words for theater alone. He wants you

"Tell me she's lying."Caius is already moving down the corridor before I catch my breath, his hand locked around mine, pulling me along at a pace my body can barely keep."I wouldn't send for you over a lie," Garrison says, matching our stride. "Iris wouldn't either."We find her in the small infirmary off the east wing, standing over a tray of vials with her sleeves pushed up and her face carved from something grim and focused. She looks up when we enter and the relief in her expression doesn't quite erase the fear underneath it."Sit," she says to me, already reaching for my wrist to check my pulse. "Now, please.""Tell me what's wrong," I say, even as I let her guide me onto the examination table."Your bloodwork from an hour ago showed elevated markers consistent with a mild toxin. Not enough to be fatal on its own, but enough to explain the dizziness, the fainting, all of it." Her fingers press gently along my abdomen, checking, searching. "I didn't think much of it until I comp

"Where is he."Caius is already moving before Garrison finishes the sentence, the crushed paper still in his fist, and I'm right behind him, adrenaline burning through the exhaustion that had started to pull at my whole body a minute ago."The council wing, my lord. He hasn't left since the interrogation ended." Garrison matches our pace down the corridor, voice tight. "I can have him detained.""No." Caius's voice is low and lethal. "I want to hear what he intends to say to my face before he knows I've already heard it secondhand.""Caius." I catch his sleeve, slow him half a step. "If you walk in there enraged, he'll see exactly how deep the threat landed. Let him think it didn't."Something in his jaw eases, just slightly, the fury banking itself back into something colder and more useful. "You think in angles even now.""Someone in this house has to."He finds Marcus in a sitting room near the council wing, a glass of wine untouched on the table beside him, every inch of his postu

"Say it isn't true."Caius pulls the dagger free from the stone with a single sharp motion, and his hand is shaking in a way I haven't seen from him all night, not during the breach, not even holding the tooth sealed in wax."It's a lie," he says again, like repetition might make it one. "A cruel, calculated lie meant to break something in me, and I refuse to give it the satisfaction.""Caius." Nadia's voice has gone careful, the tone you use with someone standing too close to an edge. "Who else sleeps in your wing. Who has access to your chambers that nobody questions."The question lands and I watch the color drain entirely from his face, watch him work through a list in his head that clearly terrifies him more with every name he crosses off."Isolde," he says finally, barely a whisper. "My mother.""She wouldn't," I say, though I have no basis for that beyond a single cold dinner this evening where she looked at me like something scraped off her shoe."I would have said the same of
