Calla's POV

Sleep took me gently that night, not like the deep deep rest I had known since I started sleeping on Lucien's bed but the kind that only half covered my mind.

My body lay still on the bed, yet my thoughts were something else… they did not settle.

The bond I had with Lucien stirred in a strange way, like something was calling me from far away. I turned in my sleep and whispered a name without knowing it.

“Willow…”

I was no longer in Lucien's chamber. The walls of the Nightmoor fad

Calla's POVI Stormed out of the infirmary with my heart racing and my thoughts burning like fireMarla words would not leave my head.‘Lucien had been lying to you despite the fact he had been pressuring me. He kept secrets from you, Calla.’I walked fast through the halls, my boots creating sounds as they collided with the floor. Even the guards I met did not do too much. They must have noticed the look on my face. They just greeted me and stepped aside… and me… I did not greet them back and I did not slow down.Willow's face came to my mind. Her small hands, her cry and my chest hurt as if something was tearing it from my inside. Even just remembering the dream I had was enough to disturb me. “He knew she was my daughter,” I whispered to myself. “He knew and he still kept all that from me.”If Lucien had indeed made plans without me, then he had chosen to walk this road without my voice. And that thought alone made my anger rise higher.I walked faster, my legs pushing me even be

Calla's POVI pushed the infirmary door open and the smell that greeted me was familiar… The room smelled of herbs.Mrs. Lydia looked up from a small table where she was grinding leaves with stone.“Lady Calla,” she said warmly, her face breaking into a kind smile. “You are on your feet early.” Another attendant near the shelves bowed her head. “Good morning, Lady Calla.”I nodded at them both. “Good morning.”My eyes moved around the room at once. I did not need to ask where Marla was as I already knew her bed. All I did was to ask, ‘Is Marla awake?’ even though I already knew the answer. And before Lydia could speak, a weak voice came from the far end of the room.“So she comes to check on me.” Marla said, waving her hands at me and I caught her with my side eyes.I turned toward her direction and Lydia gave me a small shrug as if to say, You see? Before returning back to her work.I walked slowly toward Marla’s bed, gathering all my questions and hoping to get the right answer fr

Lucien's POV I had not slept at all that night. And now it was morning.Even the candles I lit up that night in my office had almost burned away, leaving dark wax on my table like tears that had dried in place. Fenric and I had stayed awake, moving pieces of thought around like stones on a board, analyzing and trying to see a picture that would make sense of Marla's claims.Fenric leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, his face looking all serious. I looked down at the table, at the notes spread out before me. I didn't want to come to terms with the thoughts and answers crossing and pressing against my chest. “She must have it.” Fenric said at last. “Calla. Her blood must be the other Alpha bloodlines and it boiled down to her mother.” I hated to admit it because I knew that all along. But now that it had come out of Fenric's mouth, I had to agree. “That can only be the answer.” I nodded and drifted into silence. Calla's mother had Alpha blood running in her veins when

The bond I had with Lucien stirred in a strange way, like something was calling me from far away. I turned in my sleep and whispered a name without knowing it. “Willow…”I was no longer in Lucien's chamber. The walls of the Nightmoor faded and cold air brushed against my skin.I stood in a wide open place, surrounded by tall dark trees whose branches bent like claws, ready to pierce whosoever that disturbed them. The sky above me was blue and the ground under my foot was rough. I looked down only to see that I was barefoot, my toes touching the soil that felt real.My heart began to race. I soon came to the realization that I knew this place, even though I had never seen it before. The fear in my chest told me where I was. It

Lucien's POV I stood still over Marla's bed, my mind processing her words. Two Alpha bloodlines . The thought of it burned in my head like fire.I moved closer to her, my boots stopping right beside the edge of the bed, my hands curled into fists at my sides and when I spoke, it was with anger and harshness.“If you are lying to me,” I said slowly, narrowing my eyes, “ then you are playing with more than your own life.”Marla swallowed hard and tried to sit up but the pain around her shoulder and back droved her back down. She let out a weak sound and pressed her hand to her side where the arrow wound still had not fully healed.“I am not lying,” she said.I leaned forward, bending so that my face was closer to her body and my shadow falling over her face.“You said Willow was born of two Alpha bloodlines. Do you understand what that means?”“Yes,” she blinked her eyes, shaking her head.“It means her blood is power,” I muttered. “It means they needed her. It means they might be usin

Lucien's POV Calla slept beside me while I lay on my back, staring at the ceiling unable to close my eyes for long. Each time I did, I saw Willow's face just the way my mind believed it would be. I didn't even know how her face looked again. I didn't know back then. I didn't care until now. I turned my head and looked at Calla. Her hair was spread over the pillow, looking dark against the pale cloth and her hand rested on her chest as if she was holding her own heart in place. The bond between us didn't burn. It was calm now but my thoughts would not follow it into rest. Marla really got to me with her words. “Just have enough sleep while I worry about this,” I whispered, though she did not hear me.I rose slowly from the bed, careful not to wake her and pulled my coat. The night air whoosed by and touched my skin when I opened the door. It was a cool feeling and it cleared my head just enough to make a choice. I should have gone straight to the training ground but there were i
