Adela didn’t bother reacting to Mr. Garcia’s cryptic comment. She doubted he invited her over just for a juice.

After a short silence, his raspy voice sounded again.

"Niece-in-law, you went to see Boss Jones' company yesterday. What was that about? Having a chat with Robbie for fun?"

Same question again. Richard had asked her last night, and now Mr. Garcia was chiming in too. Adela frowned, confused.

"I just went to ask something private. Why are you all asking like I committed a crime?"

Mr. Garcia sipped his wine and swirled it carelessly. He wasn’t offended by her irritation. His thoughts drifted to the phone call he’d gotten from his eldest brother last night—inquiring about Layson’s girlfriend visiting Boss Jones.

If Adela were an ordinary girl, no one would care how many times she visited Robbie. But she wasn’t. She was Layson’s girlfriend and—more crucially—acknowledged by Ralph as his mother. Ralph, the apple of Mr. Norman’s eye.

This beautiful girl sitting across from him attr

Adela frowned, her lips tightly pressed together, anger simmering beneath the surface. “Then do you know if Boss Jones is in the company? I want to meet him.”To her surprise, Robbie didn’t stop her this time. He stood and leaned lazily against his desk, picked up the phone, and dialed the internal line. “Did Boss Jones come in today?”A few seconds later, he hung up and shrugged, his tone helpless. “He’s not here. He went abroad.”Adela: “…”Could he be any more obvious? Was this not just blatantly avoiding her?Robbie calmly brewed some tea as he spoke. “If you insist on talking to Boss Jones, you’ll have to wait until he returns. I can give you his number, but I doubt you’d call him.”Adela thought for a moment, then stood to leave. “Then I’ll wait for his return. I’ll visit again then. Since he’s not around, I’ll head back.”Just as she turned to leave, Robbie’s voice called out lazily, “Young lady, don’t forget your contract.”Adela paused. “I’m not taking it. I’ll wait until Bos

As soon as Adela spoke, the lawyer raised his brows slightly, a little surprised. “Adela, Boss Jones didn’t elaborate. I just received this file myself. As for what’s inside, you’ll have to look through it to find out.”That meant she had to open it.Adela untied the white string on the file and saw three identical copies of a contract. She froze, pulled one out, and flipped through the first page. A quick scan was enough — this wasn’t just shocking. It was absurd.Boss Jones was gifting New York’s largest shopping mall… to Ralph.Adela’s mind was filled with mental exclamation marks. Her immediate reaction was, “I can’t accept this gift!”She closed the contract, her expression sincere and resolute. “Ralph is too young. This gift is too extravagant. Besides, he doesn’t need it.”The lawyer quickly scanned the contract and then paused. “Adela, please don’t be so quick to refuse. Boss Jones, as a man of his generation, is offering a gift to your son. You can’t just deny the child’s rig

Marah flinched like she'd been startled when Richard called her out. She shook her head in a panic, “I’m fine, really. No need to see a doctor.”Her voice trembled so obviously that even Adela, who was casually reading the news, looked up and gave her a quick glance. Her complexion was so pale, it was like she’d seen a ghost.Richard asked a few more questions out of concern, but seeing her persistently shake her head, he didn’t press further.Adela, curious, had a vague feeling something had happened. Still leaning on her arm, she glanced back at Layson’s phone screen and gave up on figuring it out.Richard, on the other hand, looked over at the pair and didn’t frown anymore. He had to admit, Adela had a positive influence — ever since she moved into the Norman household, Layson had been coming home for dinner far more regularly. Just in the past month alone, it had already surpassed the total number of times he’d shown up over the last fifteen years.Hearing the sound of chopsticks

"Why didn’t you go to the study?" Adela asked, drying her hair with a towel as she glanced curiously at the man beside her.He took the hairdryer from her and gently helped dry her hair.In a husky, low voice, he murmured, "I was waiting for you."Adela understood. He meant he was waiting for her to finish showering so she could accompany him to the study while he worked. She nodded, her voice soft and sweet, “They took my phone earlier, and you had to call me so many times. You must’ve been terrified.”The dark gleam in Layson's eyes was so intense it made her heart skip—but it flashed and vanished in an instant. He replied gently, "I was more afraid you'd been scared."Adela paused, then smiled. “Actually… I was okay.”She had been nervous at first, even frightened. But as things unfolded, she calmed herself—something even she hadn’t expected. Maybe it was the constant stress lately: the drugging incident with Marah, the car accident, the provocations from Susan and Bard… Her nerves

Marah bit her lip so hard it bled, crimson streaks coloring her pale lips as her body trembled violently. Her voice rasped, “Who are you?”Her fingernails had dug deep into her palms, and she could feel the warm stickiness of blood under her nails. Her mind was spinning wildly. Her breathing was erratic. She imagined hundreds of scenarios—but none that explained the reality she was now trapped in.The man remained silent.Marah, desperate for answers, tried again, but the cold blade pressed to her waist gave a subtle twist. Her beautiful face twisted in pain.Clenching her teeth, she was shoved into a nearby alley. The man took out a damp cloth and covered her mouth and nose. Marah struggled for a few seconds, then went limp. The man picked her up and quickly disappeared into the alley. Not far behind, Daisy, the flower-selling girl, held her breath and followed. She had grown up in messy, chaotic places—tailing people was a survival skill she’d picked up naturally. Life had forced he

Adela’s impression of Boss Jones came only from a few comments Mr. Garcia had dropped. She still couldn't understand why Robbie’s people had gone to such extremes to bring her here. She wanted to ask, but she really didn’t want to talk to him. So, in silence, she followed into an inconspicuous room. The curtains were shut tight, no light seeped through. The room was quiet—eerily so—save for the phone on the table, whose screen occasionally lit up.In the dim light, the first thing Adela saw was the phone. It was hers. The screen showed an incoming call: Layson.Instinctively, she stepped forward to answer, but a heavy, hoarse voice suddenly rang out from above and to the side.“He’s called over ten times. Looks like you mean a lot to him.”She froze. She hadn't even realized someone else was in the room.It was the voice of an older man—calm, authoritative, and commanding attention.“You’re…” Adela hesitated, eyes scanning the darkness, “Boss Jones?”The man sat just out of the reach
