Vienna’s POV

Warren’s jaw locked as he stepped back, his voice sharpening with a defensive edge. “Oh, come on. You’re not doing this out of pure concern—you’re scared this’ll blow back on your job at Taste Royalty, aren’t you?”

I stared at him, stunned. “Excuse me?” My voice rose, sharp and cutting. “Are you seriously accusing me of that right now?”

He didn’t back down. “I’m just saying,” he said, throwing up his hands, “maybe you’re not as objective as you think.”

“This isn’t about me, Warren!” I shouted, fury bubbling up before I could even stop it. “A young man—Fred’s little brother—is in a coma. He might never wake up.”

His eyes narrowed, something darker igniting in his expression. “Funny how this sudden concern of yours lines up with how cozy you’ve gotten with Fred,” he bit out. “You’ve been wrapped up in his world since the second you two met.”

I felt something inside me snap. “Wow,” I said, almost laughing, but it came out hollow.

Vienna's POVI dropped everything—spatula, gloves, even my apron—and bolted from the kitchen, my heart pounding in my ears. Nora was right behind me, her shoes slapping against the floor as she kept pace.“What a nightmare!” I shouted over my shoulder as we dashed toward the private dining room. We burst through the doors moments later. The scene before me froze my blood.A middle-aged man lay slumped on a velvet sofa. His face was flushed—a deep, terrifying shade of purple. His eyes bulged, throat grotesquely swollen, and his hands clawed desperately at his chest. His wife knelt beside him, sobbing uncontrollably. She looked up as we entered, her cheeks mascara-stained. Her voice was shrill, cutting through the chaos like shattered glass. “He trusted you!” she screamed, pointing directly at me with shaking fingers. “They said you'd make them gluten free!”“I—what? I wasn’t told—” My voice faltered, but it didn’t matter. She couldn’t hear anything over her grief. The restaurant’s

Vienna’s POV"What the hell?" I muttered under my breath as the video autoplayed. I didn’t want to watch—but I couldn’t look away. Curiosity and dread curled tight in my chest like a wire.On the screen, Warren stood on a sunlit hotel terrace. He was dressed to perfection in a tailored charcoal suit. The wind caught his dark hair just enough to make him look effortlessly cinematic—handsome, powerful, unattainable. And then she appeared.Desiree glided into frame in a silk backless gown that clung to her like liquid moonlight. She approached from behind, her movements slow and deliberate, her expression one of practiced intimacy. Her manicured hands slid onto Warren’s shoulders, and she leaned in. Her chin grazed his collarbone, her red lips nearly brushing his ear as she whispered something unintelligeable."Luxe gives you exclusive sweet moments," read the glowing caption across the bottom of the screen. My stomach twisted painfully. The next cut showed Desiree gently dabbing the cor

Vienna’s POVI stayed focused on piping the glossy glaze over the éclairs, not even lifting my head. My voice was calm, measured."Baking’s a craft," I said lightly. "In the end, it’s the customer’s reactions that matter more than any diploma on a wall."Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the subtle shift in Ashley’s expression—her smile faltering just for a split second before she quickly recovered."Well," she said, brushing imaginary lint off her sleeve, "I guess there’s some truth to that."She paused, like she was debating whether to say more. Then, with faux casualness, she added, "Fred said the same thing, actually. He told me once my soufflé reminded him of his mother’s. Can you believe that?" She gave a small laugh, trying to sound modest, though the pride in her voice was unmistakable. I gave her a polite nod, still not looking up."But still," she added quickly, her tone sharpening just a touch, "a formal baking education is important. It’s the foundation, you know? Pass

Vienna’s POVI was focused at the dessert station, piping the last line of glaze onto a row of miniature raspberry tarts when I heard the click of heels approaching. I didn’t need to look up to know it was Ashley—her perfume arrived three seconds before she did.She leaned casually against the counter, her perfectly manicured nails drumming lightly on the marble. "Well, look at you," she said with a too-bright smile. "Barely two weeks in and already getting VIP requests. Impressive."I set down the piping bag and turned to face her. "VIP requests?"Ashley nodded, feigning enthusiasm. "Mm-hmm. One of the guests in the premium suite apparently asked for your Mirror Glaze Blackcurrant Éclairs. Said he had them at the tasting last week and won’t settle for anything else. The waiter asked me to pass the message along."Her tone was sweet. Too sweet. Dripping with fake encouragement that left a bitter aftertaste.I wiped my hands on a towel and offered a polite smile. "That’s kind of them.

Vienna’s POVI took a breath, then explained, "Remember what Desiree said earlier? That Wayne was the father of her miscarried baby…?"His expression twisted. "Yeah… I still can’t believe she’d let a guy like that touch her," he muttered, disgust curling his lip. "The guy’s a walking red flag. The way he looked at her, like he wanted to undress her and snap her in half all at once. That son of a—""That’s not the point," I cut in, keeping my voice steady. "Forget how you feel about Wayne for a second. There’s something that doesn’t make sense."Warren’s brow creased in cautious curiosity. "What do you mean?"I stepped a little closer, lowering my voice. "Think back. Wayne said he’s been in prison for two years."Warren nodded slowly, eyes narrowing. "Yeah…""And Desiree miscarried, what, three months ago?"There was a flicker of confusion behind his eyes. "Wait—"I gave him a pointed look. "Exactly. That’s the problem. How could Wayne be the father if he was in prison when she got pre
