AUTHOR’S POV

She had saw darkness. A ruined courtyard.

A figure walking away beneath a pale morning sky.

A door closing.

And beneath it all, a desperate, aching loneliness that seemed to stretch endlessly into the distance.

Elena gasped.

The emotions were not entirely hers.

She knew that with a certainty that frightened her more than the collapsing ground had.

They came from somewhere else.

From Kaiden.

She felt him as clearly as she felt the earth beneath her feet. His shock, his disbelief, and the sudden, overwhelming longing that seemed to tear through him.

Elena's chest tightened.

For one heartbeat, she felt his longing as though it belonged to her.

And beneath that longing, she felt something else.

Love. Or the memory of love.

She could not tell which.

"Elena?"

Kaiden's voice sounded distant.

She blinked.

The ravine returned around her. The loose stones. The damaged pipe. The sharp scent of damp earth.

And Kaiden's arms around her.

She jerked backward.

He released her immediately.

They stared at each other.

Kaiden's face had lost what little color it possessed. His eyes were wide, and his breathing remained uneven. He looked as though he had experienced something he could neither explain nor dismiss.

Elena pressed one hand against her chest.

Her heart was racing.

"What was that?" she whispered.

Kaiden shook his head.

"I don't know."

She looked at the arm he had grabbed.

The skin beneath his fingers still tingled.

For a moment, she wondered whether the damaged bond had somehow reacted to the physical contact. But the bond had never felt like that before. It had been an ache, a distant pull, a reminder of something broken.

This had felt alive.

As though something between them had suddenly awakened.

Luma stirred restlessly.

Did you feel that?

Elena swallowed.

"Yes."

That was not ordinary.

"I know."

Luma fell silent, but Elena could sense her wolf's unease.

Across from her, Kaiden flexed his fingers as though he could still feel her skin beneath them.

He looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.

"Did you feel..." He stopped, struggling to find the words. "Did you feel something just now?"

Elena stared at him.

She could have denied it.

She could have told him that the shock had been caused by the fall, or that she was simply frightened and needed a moment to recover.

But the emotions had been too vivid.

"Yes," she admitted.

Kaiden's throat moved as he swallowed.

"What was it?"

"I don't know."

"Was it the bond?"

Elena looked away.

"I said I don't know."

He took a cautious step toward her.

She immediately stepped back.

"Don't."

He stopped.

The movement seemed to remind them both of where they were and what had happened.

Kaiden lowered his hand.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to frighten you."

"You pulled me away from a collapsing slope. You didn't frighten me."

"Then what—"

"I don't know what happened, Kaiden."

Her voice shook despite her efforts to steady it.

She hated that.

She had spent months learning to keep her emotions from controlling her decisions. She had learned to remain calm when people were injured, to think clearly when the settlement was threatened, and to make difficult choices without allowing fear to overwhelm her.

Yet a single touch from the man she had rejected from her life had left her feeling as though the ground beneath her had shifted in a way no one could see.

Kaiden looked as unsettled as she felt.

"Maybe we should have Lydia examine you."

Elena stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because you nearly fell, and whatever that was—"

"I'm fine."

"Elena—"

"I said I'm fine!"

Her voice echoed through the ravine.

Kaiden fell silent.

She took a deep breath and forced herself to look at the damaged pipe.

"We need to finish the repairs before we lose the remaining water supply. We can discuss what happened later, if we need to."

He studied her face.

"Will you?"

She did not answer immediately.

Then she turned away.

"Bring me the clamp."

For a moment, he remained where he was.

Finally, he picked up the tool and handed it to her.

They worked in silence after that.

Garrick and the hunter returned with the support beam, unaware of what had happened. Elena concentrated on the repair, checking the connections and ensuring the pipe was secured before allowing the water pressure to be restored.

Kaiden helped without speaking.

When the final support was in place, they reopened the line and waited.

At first, nothing happened.

Then a thin stream of water emerged from the damaged connection.

Garrick let out a relieved breath.

"That should hold until we can replace the entire section."

Elena nodded.

"We'll inspect it again tomorrow morning. For now, we need to check the storage tanks and make sure the water is flowing properly."

The others began gathering their tools.

Elena remained beside the pipe for a moment, watching the water run through the repaired line.

She should have been relieved.

Their supply had been restored, and the settlement would not have to ration water as severely as she had feared.

She pressed her hand against her chest.

He is still our mate, Luma whispered.

Elena's eyes closed.

"No."

You felt him.

"I felt something. That doesn't mean anything has changed."

But even as she said it, she remembered the emotion that had passed between them.

And she did not know whether that feeling had belonged to her, to him, or to the bond that had once connected them.

Behind her, Kaiden stood a short distance away.

She could feel his gaze on her, though she refused to turn around.

He had felt it too. She knew he had.

Whatever had passed between them had been too powerful to dismiss as a trick of fear or exhaustion.

But neither of them understood what it meant.

And until she did, Elena intended to keep her distance.

She had survived losing Kaiden once.

She would not allow a mysterious spark to make her forget why she had walked away.

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   LEARNED TO LOVE HER

AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th

AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   THE RULES OF MY HAVEN

AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I WON’T FORCE HER

AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw
